My sax teacher who has been a professional musician for over 40 years and played with greats such as Chet Baker, Stan Kenton and other great big bands throughout the years always speaks about Dave Karr with awe. He has called him a genius on many occasions. They frequently exchange horns and are good friends. He also tells me that he is a great guy as well. Talent and class.
Kind of rude yes, definitely. More importantly not necessary, subjective I guess, but in my humble opinion empirically false. Never heard of Dave Karr (sorry to say) but the dude genuinely swings, plays very honestly with great language and history in his sound - sounds like himself too... Always naysayers... Kudos to Dave Karr (I am now a fan)...
liamjazz: I don't think you meant it but it's an unkind remark to call a musician of Dave Karr's caliber an "old guy". Age isn't much a factor in music, unless you're just starting out as a child. It has more to do with following traditions, skill, practice, good study habits and experience! I'm sure age will not diminish Eric Alexander's skills and he'll probably keep improving with it.
lol. No, I didn't meen it as an unkind remark but as a massive compliment. I made that comment 5 months ago and by coincidence I was practsing some rhythm changes today and thought I would check this video out again and I remember why I made that comment! Because he's Killin!!! I was just very impressed to see an old guy who looks just like your typical trad/dixieland jazzer from where I come from playing so hip and modern. I love his lines!

If you want to be picky, judge on Dave Karr's last solo chorus (at 2:00), there's some total modern brilliance for you. much good stuff in this one.

Don't want to be rude but his lines are rather predictable....
