Mine interpretation was that people would think that there's something wrong with gay because of there reactions and wanted to make clear that there isn't anything wrong with being gay. Saying and acting like you're absolutly not gay is making you're sexual preference clear and for people that are gay can get the idea or feeling that there's something wrong with that. People are different, like there sexual preference and there shouldn't be a reason to (mis)judge people because of that

If you think this episode is an example of how the writers hate gays, you're sorely mistaken and possibly a bigot, yourself.

This was two things:

1.)A picture of the slowly but surely growing acceptance of homosexuality in cultural hubs like NYC in the 90s.

2.)The still uncomfortable nature behind the stigma of being gay (which is arguably still prevalent, today).

Both of those combined with the consistent efforts of Seinfeld/Costanza attempting to attract the opposite sex is the whole point

They truly have no problem with folks being gay; they're just aware that 100% of people don't yet feel the same. Even in Manhattan, you'd hesitate to be publicly gay in quite the same way you'd be publicly STRAIGHT; some people still look askance, keep an arm's length. This show lightheartedly points out a corner of straight liberals' minds where solidarity could still grow.
