ahhhh naw man. Billy Kilson is no Chris Dave. Billy Kilson can be kinda tasteless and shreddy. Dave, Harland, Kendrick, Jamire play way more musically than Kilson. But don't get me wrong man Kilson is a beast and i admire his playing a lot. Now all he does is play with Chris Botti :S
YO, I neva peeped that he grapped 2 sticks in his right hand til drumminggenius pointed it out. Im a little happy with myself now, kuz i was SO impressed by his speed I started working on that, and got it with one stick...YEAH!!! lol@super excitement.
I have to admit that this is a crazy groove alright...he's ONLY using 1 stick during the entire hi-hat work, and keep the groove with the LEFT hand. He's just got INSANE hand speed with the right! Ya know I would LOVE to catch a show out at Yoshi's. If you guys like Chris Dave then you'll LOVE one of my FAVORITE percussionist in the world of Jazz check out JEFF HAMILTON! He's a showman for certain and Swings like NOBODY's business
2 sticks in his right hand....... and you don't have to admit anything, it speaks for itself. and what's with the Jeff Hamilton reference? I could't think of two drummers more different in style and ability. I'm not starting beef i just don't know where you're coming from.
Okay Genius! You've got me player had to look at the video once again I must've been tripping that day the SIDEWAYS video kinda threw me off!?!? I see him grab the 2nd stick from the stick bag around 1:03! NO beef taken I just said IF you like Chris I ONLY recommended checkin out Jeff Hamilton and I DID say that he's heavy SWING JAZZ(versus Post-Bop) but the point was AWESOME drummers NOT to compare! You're a Drummer and so am I, Jeff is a Legend like Peter Erskine OR Dave Weckyll (Rock & Roll)
Again in the spirit of all great Drummers/Percussionist check out these guys too NOT FOR SIMILAR STYLE *LMAO* but because they're Awesome: ?uest Love (the Roots), Dave Weckl "solo", Steve Gadd(of Steely Dan), Harvey Mason, John Blackwell(PRINCE), Sonny Emory(Earth, Wind & Fire), OR the ORIGINAL "Funky Drummer" Himself CLYDE STUBBLEFIELD (James Brown & Most sampled Drums in Hip-Hop history) for more entertainment also check Joey Jordison "in Drum Studio" & "In Studio '05" (from SlipKnot) ENJOY!
cool yeh. i get ya. but if you like modern jazz/groove drummers. i'd recomend the likes of kendrick scott, damion reid, the incredible marcus gilmore, ari hoenig, adam deitch, gene lake, nate smith, stokely, thomas pridgen, KARRIM RIGGINS etc. That's if you wanna stray off the beaten track, no pun intended :P
Ya know this is 1 of the craziest clips I have seen on youtube. Geez...Chris is awesome...Spanky gets a lot of credit for Chris's style of playing. Both great cats both Chris is the man! This is crazy...lol Thanks for uploading
So many musicians are handicapped because they depend so much on the drummer, but you have to be a skilled musician to play with Chris, whose time measures are transparent and so perfectly chaotic....I have played drums for 30 years and have to pat my feet to keep time with him....
I so agree...musicians that depend on drummers keep drummers in a box so much these days....so If a drummer wants to play like Mr.Dave here the other musician has to have amazing time like Mr.Glasper
This is exactly the type of stuff i'm talking about...this hurts to watch. When Rob start's slowing down @ 1:58, chris does too, to a point where they slow down to the same temple they started with...does that make sence?
dave is amazing but in my book billy kilson is tops look his stuff up on youtube and you'll see why..
