  • On what planet do those rappers serve a purpose? Not on this planet and definitely not on this show.....!

  • AGREED GET THOSE NO TALENT IDIOTS OFF THE STAGE -whoever gave them a mic should be shot

  • Munyungo on percussion GO DMJ Darryl Munyungo Jackson of course GO HERBEI wow what a trailblazer. Judge not, when it's your turn, o your OWN thing, seen bless up all this creativity WHA CHA BOOM

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP.

    Regards,

    Music lover.

  • stoopid rappers spoiled the show.

    they totally couldn't flow.

  • aright... this was... crazy :D

  • ladys and gentleman: the song is raped by "the hood" ... Yeah! COME ON! YEAHH!! so pitty...

  • the rappers looked so out of place here

  • I watched one more time....just to make sure I won't be watching ever again....... herbie...please never again... its not worth the money..

  • cmon herbie...really? jazz biggest threat! RAP!!!

  • The US3 version of Cantaloop is actually not that bad, I think it's cool to see rappers take good jazz songs and change them a bit, that it what music is all about. In any case, it's better than some of the other rap...

It also introduces Herbie to a different crowd, that's good, his talent should be shared with all!

However, I must admit that the rappers are no where as talented as Herbie, and they really don't deserve to perform with him... Bobby Mcferrin would be so much better!!

  • @NicholasFruneaux old school hip hop is cool, but I like jazz more than jazz fusion hip hop things...

  • these no talent assholes do not belong on stage with teal musicians

  • C'est vraiment Gééééannnnt !!! Je ne m'en lasse pas de réécouter cette vidéo

Bravo à tous ces musiciens formidables ... Ghis

  • omg these hoppers ruin one of the best jazz pieces ever. i mean, what's the point of standing there and saying a dozen times "come on" and "yeah", everybody could do this stuff...

but without them, it's quite nice :D

  • Cantaloupe tonight daddy has the car

  • fantastico

  • the rapping isn't really working in this particular song but the DJ sounds really good. I've never really been into hip hop but i do believe that there are many hip hop artists that do jazz a great tribute and compliment jazz with a modern interpretation. Listen to some of DJ Rob Swifts take on a large assortment of jazz styles from Charlie Parker to Herbie Hancock. Also everyone using the racist comments you need to evolve

  • lol, i feel like the rappers must just feel like retards. like what are you clowns doing up there? herbie ftw

  • OMFG!

These fucking rap idiots are screwing up everything!

    Herbie is king

  • could have been worse though, the rappers could have said stuff like

"bitch ho - pack the pipe - bleed you - pants on the ground"

Herbie is a genuis - rap sucks.. waste of energy. DJ Smash ha ha talent?

  • hfuhufhuehfu

  • Not the best version indeed!

  • Watch your racist remarks people. You say you appreciate jazz (Founded Black Art), yet your remarks say different. this is Herbie trying something new. Appreciate it for what it is....

  • @bassmancanjam its not racism to call meaningless drek what it is brother. herbie got plenty of jack for that show, that's why he was there.

  • I was listening to this and being a man that has spent years & years studying the bagpipes, hours upon hours until my fingers bleed and my ears ring and to watch these two idiots ruin a song by saying Yo it is the fall of great music, thank you God for not letting a rapper ruin the bagpipe music, lol now that is funny, can you see a couple of low pants brothers trying to fig out which pipe to blow into and giving up and turn it into a bong or crack pipe.

  • these people dont belong on stage together!

  • yeah i agree shut the fuck up

  • chromatype...fuck off dickhead!!!!!!!!

  • These YO-YO's totally demonstrated their innate lack of musicality, talent and common sense...thus they are potential stars of the new American music consumer.

  • I refer to the rappers...not the talent on stage...

  • Looked like everyone had a good time, both on the stage and i the audience. Looks like something was communicated here. Folks shouldn't be so defensive about "what is jazz." Look how much Miles grew jazz... and he was both praised and hated all the way.

  • right man ! i agree with u

  • "if you know the words, let me hear you sing."

Nice, he probably hasn't even heard the song to think there are lyrics!

  • the rappers were Us3, they made a rendition of Cantaloupe Island, added rap lyrics, and gave it a new name: Cantaloop.

  • because they can't actually write their own music or good music, they just take actual good music and just curse or say "oh, yeah". notice every "rap" song has the same rhythm to it... I dare them to try to write something as creative as cantaloupe island, or chameleon...oh wait, they dont actually play any instruments!

  • I am with you brother! You said it in SPADES.

  • the jerko-destructo-just-don't-care treatment, or how to flush a classic

  • Rap sucks ass! A bunch of musically ignorant idiots. What a fucking pile of shit they are. Shame on Herbie for letting these fucking ignorant bastards fuck up his music. These assholes don't know shit about music.

  • the rappers just dont understand how musicians will generally take turns, so when hancock is out there improvising and 'releasing' himself, i want them, as the listening, to shut the fuck up so i can both hear him and get into it. This is what i find most apalling in the rap community--this need to be louder than everyone else. It's completely senseless, because it ruins the music. (I hope this didnt sound too opinionated, but it seems to be true.) Anyways, nice performance otherwise.

  • I actually agree with that

  • "throw your hands up in the air, wave 'em round like you just don't care"

    *cringe*

  • long ass version here... its okay

  • this is horrible

  • not very good version is it..

  • wow...this song seems ruined to me here...I'm not saying rap sucks or whatever, but this version of cantaloupe island is too different from the original to me

  • wtf? "too different from the original", it's jazz - here and now, if you play jazz the same every time it's so called "jazz", not jazz in the true meaning.

  • Trust me, I love jazz in most every form, and modernized jazz is different every time, it's where blues, soul, funk all came from.

I just think that if they were take this jazz standard with a hip hop approach, then they'd make it sound like hiphop? They just sampled from the original and added a beat while they yelled "yeah!" over the music. I don't mean to argue, I just think that in hiphop the focus is on the vocals, not the music in the background

  • Accomplished Rappers such as Public Enemy, Lauren Hill, Queen Latifah, Jay-Z, and the late Tupac Shakur have all employed the following literary and poetic elements in their musical and poetic work: alliteration, allusion, assonance, characterization, denotation, connotation, metaphor, personification, repetition, rhythm, dialect, figurative language, free verse, hyperbole, imagery, irony, point of view, refrain, simile, setting, speaker.

  • Todays generation speaks of love, death, self-expression, personal, political, and social issues, poverty and riches, and life experiences. They intertwine these thoughts creatively and innovatively within strong rhythms and entrancing melodies that capture the heart and mind of the listener.

The mind set of todays youth can be found within the lyrics of the music the they listen to.

  • I show and prove as a stick in move Hear the poems recited on top of the groove Smooth, mind, floating like a butterfly Notes start to float suttle like a lullabye Brace yourself as the beat hits ya Dip trip flip fantasia
  • As an MC, i do repeat lyrics over instrumental compositions. Hip-Hop evolved from great genre such as jazz, R&B, Disco and Soul. As hard as may be for you to believe there are MC's out there that do know how to play instruments and do more then jump around the stage muttering violent and misogynistic lyrics. Its hard to believe that we still live in a time when a persons artistic expressions are left to be ridiculed, because you dont consider their music "ART"-

  • ok agreeing with you.

could you give us some words of explanation to their expression of art? i'm not used to it. what do they do, what background, and so on...

  • I think that with this rap and childish form of expression ( i am sorry i will never employ the word of art for dat, despite the mtv lobby ) we are coming back to the darkest period of humanity...i feel so cold...

  • in da performance... rappers are useless as an asshole in da hand

  • Cantaloupe is an easy and very effective theme, above which improvise... indeed one of the most great inventions of Herbie

  • Could everyone just get a little less uptight, light a doobie, and go with the flow?

  • The lineage of sound has made an interesting transition. If we had Beethoven, Brahms, Ravel, Gershwin, Armstrong, and Hancock, Herbie would be the rapper.

  • get the rappers off the stage!!!

    greg osby -sick

  • agreed completely!!!

  • jeeze! herbie doesn't need those no talent clowns to be relevant when will people stop elevating that "genre" if you can count talking jive, as performing, instead of actual work put in on an instrument learning to PLAY

  • By the way, do you think the audience cares about our opinions about the music? Look at them, they're feelin' it. Like Bruce Lee said, "Don't think. FEEEEEEEL!"

  • One aspect of music is that it breaks down barriers. Where else can you get rappers, one of the greatest musicians of all time, and other respected musicians on the same page--did I say page, I meant stage--and have a conversation and make the audience feel the vibe of that conversation. So, it's not about

putting down a genre of music, or comparing one to another. It's about coming together for a common goal, in this case, making music, regardless of the genre, and making the audience FEEL IT.

  • hip-hop and jazz go together like shakespeare and danielle steele. one produces the greatest art of all time- the other is mindless crap my three year old could do. I still respect Herbie for reaching out- he is a true pioneer- fearless

  • So is Hip Hop the nu jazz?

  • it was in 1995

  • Thats true! but the mainstream and to big egos killed real hip hop..

  • a style of music can not be 'killed'. A career can, by suicide or neglect....

  • come on, it's a metaphor.. don't take it to serious!!

not only human beeings could be "killed", ideas could be "killed" too. but i don't want to be a smartass and repeat my philosophy-seminar.. ;)

  • your metaphor for my sarcastic aside.....

  • he he.. okay! ;)

  • @Bobbelden but what exactly is the word killed, for if man did not exist then neither would the words created by thus such parties

  • As a fan of Herbie and his music and someone who despises Rap, I'm quite sad to see those bloody rappers murdering such a fantastic tune (and one of my favourite). But times are changing. Back in the 70s it was Funk, now it's Rap. Too bad...

  • i don't know whats gso good about going "YEAH" on every 4+ of each bar. I'd rather just hear herbie's solo unintruded. I guess its not really important as its just a bit of fun and a guest appearance

  • It's good tunes, but in my humble opinion i think it would have been a lot better without the rapper, the DJ sounded great, but some of the hip hop "get up, come on, get up" etc kinda got old, the original Us3 version i think had a nice flow to rhythm with the vocals, plus a lower smooth bass jazz type ring to it, which works well if it's a smal piece, but being this long it would have been better just letting the dj and band jam out.

  • yes, it's quite good! However I was thinking about this video with other people too, and I should admit that Herbie was prepared to this experience, and maybe he agreed in this experiment... I think it's synthomatic of a kind of mentality: I can't understand well if this happening was only a matter of spectacle, a way to show two different worlds once; or maybe there is a deeper individual motivation in Herbie's presence; or maybe it has only a commercial purpose, I don't know

  • at the time Herbie was joined at the hip to Us3 via "Cantaloop" and this was a live version that could have only happened at this time. My job as the producer of the concert was to fill the house and make it possible for Herbie to jam with my band...20 thousand people showed up....and we had a lot of fun. The rappers were very cool to hang with and I had worked with them on some tracks for Blue Note Japan. So this was natural. DJ Smash was in my band at the time. Commercial....no....American....

  • This is the tranlation, loosely....

What a cocksucker are that two assholes, is a shit thing... If I was him, a thing like that would drive me nuts and I went out of stage, or probably I would have force them to go down. Moreover, Herbie is special guest in one of his own tunes, and he's mistreated in that way... I watched to this this video for the soloists only

  • You're 20 years old...what do you know about anything.....

  • Blasphemy
