its scary to think, that what nazi germany could have become, if it wasnt for people like eisenhower, patton, marshall, wainright, bradley, churchill, roosevelt, brooke, montgomery, alexander, and the 16 million other US veterans of World war 2, thank you for keeping democracy alive. happy veterans day grandpa
thinking what the nazis could have become if it wasnt for the courage of churchill, roosevelt, patton, eisenhower, and millions of men... i thank all of our veterans for what they have done to keep democracy alive!
I love that they chose such a depressing video with such an uplifting and hopeful piece of music. It just makes one realize that the world is actually a beautiful place, that there are good, great things even out there. The children represent the innocence and happiness we all tend to lose as we grow up. It makes one stop and wonder why we're killing each other all over the planet, why we're destroying all the good things we have. Still, there's a sliver of hope that it's not too late yet.
I think the juxtaposition is the video makers way of saying "why" with so much right in the world, would we wage war on one another. In the middle of the video, before the violence picks up, there are two small children drawing and laughing, which is what we should all be doing with our time,
To me this song kind of feels like a hopeful message about death. Despite all the pain and suffering in this world, we will eventually experience something indescribable, we will finally understand the reason why we are here and living on this planet.
While I recognise that the music and visuals are quite juxtaposed, I think it's a message about hope. You know, that despite all the pain and terror and horror in the world, there is still hope. But also not be mindlessly happy, but be aware of your role in the world, to be someone whose life improves the world rather than adding to the hurt
Sorry, but this video seems a little strange to me. This is probably Godspeed's most uplifting song in my opinion, so why you would set it against such negative images (bombs tests, wars, etc) seems a little out of context to me. It would probably make more sense if it was set to a song like World Police or Rocket Falls. Then again, the video is well-made and I suppose it's all down to interpretation.
@LaLiLuLeLo1991 This so very much. This is some of the most uplifting, hopeful, and downright euphoric music I ever heard, the visuals just don't fit.
@LaLiLuLeLo1991 The video they made for the song in the concert is like wandering through a forest to a collapsed house, and then looking at a mass of crows in the sky, and then riding trains.
@Molton1878 I know, it's very powerful. I'm lucky enough to say I've seen them live a few times. What I really like about the visuals at their shows is how they never seem forced; they're never trying to tell any overarching story or take attention away from the music, they just go together well with the songs. That's not to say you couldn't find meaning in them if you wanted to, but they never demand that you have to. Godspeed live is just a great experience overall, musically and visually.

@BlindSniperSurvival Yeah, you're pretty much the scum of the earth. The germans were awful during the war but america and britain have not been that innocent as we still know to this day. no winners in war just blood.
Dude,i think this vid was more than just music,i think it represented how cruel life is,but at the same time in other parts of the world,Happy and Exciting,Exillerating,Joyful,Every Good feeling there is to feel,My heart is beating faster at the music intensifies,wow..
Music is music, singing is music, the sounds the words make is music, the ideas the words represent is poetry. To place emphasis on the lyrics in any song is to admire its extra musical elements and thus hardly music in the definitive sense, so why call songs music when generally its lyrics are considered its most important aspect?
People listen to 'instrumental' music through an understanding and appreciation of this definitive idea of music.
you want a better understanding of music? look at it's lineage, thats what classical music was, the ability to convey and evoke emotion simply through the resonance in an instrument allowing a musician to organize and manipulate sound. And therein lies the definition of music.. ANY organized sounds. look up John cage's "4'33"
My comment was directed at those who only listen to music with lyrics.
In "4'33" the random rustling's of the listeners environment can hardly be called organised sounds and in what way does 'emotion' manifest itself.
Having said that your definition is technically correct though your use of the word 'emotion' is a bit ambiguous given that the word is used in many ways and is subject to many interpretations. It could mean anything and your entire definition rests upon it.
I agree lyrics and singing are no more than another instrument, a song could be in another language and I have no idea what theyre saying (i.e. classical opera) but the manner in which the voice is used as an instrument can convey emotion and add to the song. with 4'33" its not necessarily random though it may not be exactly the same each time, everything is measured. If you consider confusion, anticipation or even irritation as an emotion then I think that counts. Because that piece evokes it.
and yes I realize its rather ambiguous because emotion can constitute soo many things and is highly subjective what one person feels about one piece could vary greatly from how another person feels (for example our differing opinions on 4'33"). Its meant to be a little ambiguous because of that subjectivity and the broad scope of "emotions" that an organized sound, or music can bring out.
that being said you make some good points 1scattered, i appreciate the input. :]
@1Scattered Exactly, and you can see a clear example of this in Daft Punks song Around the World. They use the lyrics in the song as music rather than for the words themselves.
Bullshit. It's up to the listener to decide whether the lyrics or the intrumentation provides the art. It can be different for each person and it can differ from song to song.
Take any song and it's the 'music' that conveys the emotion and evokes feeling in the listener consistently. Fair enough, sometimes people could listen to the lyrics first and foremost, but even in these cases the music usually 'sets the scene' in a sense. I guess I proved your point lol.
@1Scattered you are being somewhat of a fundamentalist. yes, this is music, but when an artist decides that the lyrics are more important, there is nothing you can do about it. i love instrumental but i have to admit that it "cut's your legs" in some ways, because the only instrumental song i heard that had a political value was made by hendrix
this music is truely amazing. i mean no matter what language you speak or culture you use you can completely understand the music. thats something extremely rare especially for today.
This music is interesting, and I believe I understand what they are going for, but actually listening to the whole thing got a little boring. Godspeed has stuff I like more than this.
I love your comment cause you obviously don't enjoy music unless it has lyrics and just completely don't enjoy the beauty and skill required to make such music as this.
We will do anything to protect our way of life. We will kill children, mothers, fathers, babies. And anyone who gets in our way. That's what we do to protect our 'moral society'.
For those of you who criticize our way of life and disgrace those who die to protect it, the awesome thing about this country is that you can LEAVE when ever you want. You notice that people cross oceans and travel from all parts of the world to get here? No one is standing in your way from leaving.
Is this on the album "Lift your skinny fingers up to heaven like antennas" ? Because if it is, then that settles it, cause I'm buying all their albums, and because Godspeed You! Black Emperor may just be the best band I've heard.
Yeah it's music, i just mean it's a little more than that, like it's not made just to make money or for people to like it, it's made to create emotive response etc. Just think it's more of an art form than just plain music.
How sad that you live in a world where your first impression of "just plain music" is commercial music. Where I come from it's assumed that the default of music should be art, and anything that is not is the inferior exception.
It's strange. When I look at the soldiers in the foxhole at 3:40, the music just makes me think about what must have been going through their heads. Something I usually don't do when I watch war footage. I see that soldier in the front, reaching over for something, and I think about what he must have been thinking in such a chaotic situation and what he intended to get before his thoughts, and everything else in his life, are cut off completely from the nearby explosion that kills him.
I find it difficult to understand because this song excited me so much.
The potency is always fascinating in its good and in its evil. This gives us an interior conflict and provokes mixed emotions of excitement and disturbance.
I've always though of this song as a birth of some kind.
It starts so simple, and then the music crescendos, and life begins. What was so orderly breaks out into the greater universe, and becomes a part of that universe.
lol agreed. you simply can't listen to post-rock music on youtube because sq is so bad. i just played my own song and watched the video. this is such a great video
unlike those fucknuts at the bottom of the page arguing about which band is better, EITS or godspeed you...I F-ing love EITS and im exploreing godspeed you and just enjoying this song, i think people like them at the bottom need to shut up and just enjoy the good songs produced by them and no need to insult each other coz i think different bands are all unique in their own ways

Where do we come from, and where are we going? Who are we, and what do we want? Why do we do what we do, think what we think, feel what we feel?
Maybe it is better not to know the answer, because maybe knowing be too hard to bear. Or maybe, just maybe it will ruin the surprise.

1Scattered 2 years ago 50
Very well said.
wwII98 2 years ago
you want a better understanding of music? look at it's lineage, thats what classical music was, the ability to convey and evoke emotion simply through the resonance in an instrument allowing a musician to organize and manipulate sound. And therein lies the definition of music.. ANY organized sounds. look up John cage's "4'33"
dontpunchgrandpa 2 years ago
My comment was directed at those who only listen to music with lyrics.
In "4'33" the random rustling's of the listeners environment can hardly be called organised sounds and in what way does 'emotion' manifest itself.
Having said that your definition is technically correct though your use of the word 'emotion' is a bit ambiguous given that the word is used in many ways and is subject to many interpretations. It could mean anything and your entire definition rests upon it.
1Scattered 2 years ago
I agree lyrics and singing are no more than another instrument, a song could be in another language and I have no idea what theyre saying (i.e. classical opera) but the manner in which the voice is used as an instrument can convey emotion and add to the song. with 4'33" its not necessarily random though it may not be exactly the same each time, everything is measured. If you consider confusion, anticipation or even irritation as an emotion then I think that counts. Because that piece evokes it.
dontpunchgrandpa 2 years ago
and yes I realize its rather ambiguous because emotion can constitute soo many things and is highly subjective what one person feels about one piece could vary greatly from how another person feels (for example our differing opinions on 4'33"). Its meant to be a little ambiguous because of that subjectivity and the broad scope of "emotions" that an organized sound, or music can bring out.
that being said you make some good points 1scattered, i appreciate the input. :]
dontpunchgrandpa 2 years ago
Beautifully said.
DoozyBat 2 years ago
@1Scattered Exactly, and you can see a clear example of this in Daft Punks song Around the World. They use the lyrics in the song as music rather than for the words themselves.
theteht 1 year ago
@1Scattered
Unremarkable1000 1 year ago
@1Scattered you are being somewhat of a fundamentalist. yes, this is music, but when an artist decides that the lyrics are more important, there is nothing you can do about it. i love instrumental but i have to admit that it "cut's your legs" in some ways, because the only instrumental song i heard that had a political value was made by hendrix

For those of you who criticize our way of life and disgrace those who die to protect it, the awesome thing about this country is that you can LEAVE when ever you want. You notice that people cross oceans and travel from all parts of the world to get here? No one is standing in your way from leaving.

psshhh pretentious much, its music, great music but still music
daaliminator2 2 years ago
Yeah it's music, i just mean it's a little more than that, like it's not made just to make money or for people to like it, it's made to create emotive response etc. Just think it's more of an art form than just plain music.
Dechead92 2 years ago 4

Ho difficoltà a capire poichè tale brano possa emozionarmi cosi tanto.
La potenza affascina sempre sia nel suo bene che nel suo male.
Questo procura in noi un conflitto interiore e scatena emozioni miste di eccitazione e turbamento.

I've always though of this song as a birth of some kind.
It starts so simple, and then the music crescendos, and life begins. What was so orderly breaks out into the greater universe, and becomes a part of that universe.

Music is it's own language, and it doesn't matter who speaks it, so long as it stays on everyone's tongues. -Weatherman
