@agwoodliffe ===> The Phantom was mentioned by Dern's character during one of what I call the "interview" segments... where she's beat up and spilling guts to the guy with crooked round glasses (Mr K, who actually looks quite beat-up himself). If you rent the DVD disk 2 there are deleted scenes (Lynch calls them "other things that happened") and there is a scene involving the Phantom (he is selling "magic" watches). I wish I could give a better explaination but I don't know if there is one....

@agwoodliffe===> The Phantom does appear in the movie. I think he was a smuggler-salesman -pimp- of Polish prostitutes, (who have ever-increasing screen time as the film progresses) but I don't believe his name was mentioned during those scenes......

Great line from the bearer of the old wives' tales. Those who watch Lynch know these "mystics" (i.e. Log Lady from Tiwn Peaks) carry much of the meaning. When she said "Brutal fucking murder," we knew horror would surface.
