I consider myself a rabid Who fan and always have been, but I never heard this tune before tonight, and I'm grateful to you for posting this, it's an instant favorite. NO BAND on Earth can touch the Who in live, and this video gives you a little peak into why the WHO is head and shoulders above other bands in live performance. The power, the brilliance, the sheer rock 'n' roll excellence-THE WHO!
@dougalmac54 spot on Dougal. There have been many great bands but none equal The Who live on stage. There has never been and never will be better. There simply couldn't be a better Live band than The Who. Between '69 and '73 they defined forever what live rock is. Unprecedented and unfollowable.
Turn down that noise! (Keith) Turns down the tape player. He then smashes a television set on the hotel floor and says thats noise. Turns up the tape player and says thats the who. True story. Love the man!
@oberfour1 The story I heard that he was in the lobby intently listening to a demo to learn a song (yes, he often was a disciplined artist, contrary to legend), when someone asked him to "turn down the noise," at which time he led the hotel employee to his room, and had the fellow stand outside the door. Then an explosion rocked the room, after which Moon emerged and said, indicating the room: "That, dear boy, is noise," then, pointing to the tape player "THIS is the 'OO' "
Hard to believe this was originally left off "Who's Next". It's become one of my favorite Who tunes. Powerful bridge tha just explodes. Some of Pete's best writing.
THANKS SO MUCH - Loved this one! Soooo wished my brother took me to that concert at the Meriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland.... (wah wah!)
The Who Dat played Superbowl the year The New Orleans Saints won it! It's The Who Dat without Entwistle and Moon RIP, Bless You Boys. Greatest rock band ever. Entwistle, best bassist in rock history, skeleton costume is brilliant. Moon absolute drumming maniac. Townsend a songwriting genius. Daltrey greatest singer in rock history. The Who. N.O. Saints Superbowl win in Feb. Dat was The Who Dat. The Who was rooted in N.O. R&B. That's what Pete said. Roger said he was for The Saints.
i got to say on the isle of wright show i do not like how the bass is recorded or it could just be how it plays on yt but on the live at leeds album/cd the bass and drums is in the left speaker to my head phones and the guitar is on the right speaker of my head phone vocals are split but you here petes background on the left and johns on the right any one who has the album and listens to it through a cd player will understand
My young nephew said it best, "Its as if all the band members are playing lead". Its the sum of the ingredients that make the cake - and that's the Who - I saw them in '73 and '75 before Keith died. Damn!
Townshend really was a genius when it came to writing songs which change at such a rapid pace. One minute you have a lyrical intro on guitar the next is pure power. Long Live Rock
I really love to see Keith and his magical way of 'drumming'. There were few like him. Others I recognize as great: I. Paice, Cozy Powell and Bonzo. I like Roger Taylor too.
Hard to understand why this didn't make the Who's Next lp. Probably due to having enough 5 star material. They should have thrown a bonus 45 in the lp with Water as the B side. Didn't hear this song until '95. Always great to unearth a gem after you've heard everything else one of your favorite band has released. Makes you go right back and listen to the whole catalog all over again.
no one ever lived quite the rockstar life that keith moon did, he represented what rock n roll was all about!!!!!! probably only entwistle comes close
entwistle took a lot of drugs and alcohol, he did cocaine, smoked shit and that's why he had heart problems which contributed to his death and he died totally like a rockstar, in the hard rock hotel and casino in las vegas, with a stripper and alcohol bottles next to his bed, that's pretty much sex, drugs and rock n roll!!!!!!
also, entwistle had the ability to do, eat and drink more than anyone else, that's why he was called the ox, bill wyman described him as the quietest man in private but the loudest man on stage, so, he was pretty much a party animal!!!!!!
I think Pete had more of a problem with Kenney Jones didn't he? He stated they weren't disappointed that he wasn't able to do the 1989 anniversay tour.
Actually, Pete didn't mind Kenny that much, it was roger who thought "He wasn't the right choice for the who" Which is why they ended up going with Ringo Starr's kid.
Well, they chose Simon Phillips first, who had been playing with Pete since his first solo album in the 70's. Phillips was definately a better fit than Jones IMO,
This is just a purely amazing song, Petes lyrics and writing ability are astonishing. I love the who. Damn I wish I could go back in time. This is a great performance, and yes, they are in great form.
From a female Who fan, it is difficult to take my eyes off of Daltry's bod. When I can tear my gaze away, I always find it fascinating to watch Moon play.
It was all NEW then! It must have been a great time in rock/pop.... even the drugs (if they were there that night?? i know Rodger never really used drugs) people did'nt really know the consequences/fall out like we do today. Anyway that tune was/is SAVAGE! listen to Petes guitar when he hits the overdrive. Moon seems fairly on the ball to me, keepin great time and loads of trickie rolls. You can see how much Led Zeppelin copied The Who..... great stuff thanks (Who-head for 29years)
everyone who says moon sucked at this particular concert should get the dvd and listen to it again with better audio quality...his fills and what he did was incredible. this youtube vid lacks audio quality not moon quality.
Too right... between the 3:50 and 4:03 one-handed, laughing himself silly and waving the drumstick obviously trying trying to get a smike out of entwhistle.
I'm not really sure how anyone could say Keith sucked at this gig. Fair enough, The Who would probably NEVER top Live At Leeds, but even Keith on an off night (which this certainly wasn't) was better than most other drummers, even with one hand tied behind his back.
And as for him abusing his body with drugs and alcohol. Yes, he had plenty of reasons, not least the mental storm he lived with and which is almost never covered as all people care about is the "Loon". He was a tormented man.
Live at Leeds is considerd by most music critics to be the best live album in the history rock'roll. Its just 50minutes of complete jam.A quick one while he's away
Actually moon was hyperactive but hes one of the best drummers ever...but it was more probably than pete left the band than fireing moon...i think entwistle would have left with moon if that happenned
Watching Moon ,it's hard not to wonder what is going on in his mind.I think he went about making goofy faces and acting silly just to amuse himself sometimes.I bet he was as loony alone as he was for the cameras.
Jason, not at all. Pete and Keith were known for improvising comedy routines and got along very well.
That said, search YT for the interviews with Alan Rogan, Pete's guitar tech. He makes it very clear that Pete holds everyone involved with their shows to the highest standards of professionalism.
That may explain why they can still put on a strong stage show when many of their contemporaries just coast.
"Pete and Keith were known for improvising comedy routines and got along very well." Only partly true. Townshend became increasingly annoyed by Moon's erratic, unreliability and his eroding skills. By WHO ARE YOU, there was a strong chance that Townshend may have fired Moon. He loved him, but he had problems with him, as everyone did back then.
Some have a reason to abuse alcohol or drugs. Maybe Keith had a reason. So don't judge without knowing. Keith was a part the Who also, a good part like Pete, Roger and John!
From that book I realized, Pete liked Roger, John and Keith didn't like Roger, John and Keith were like best, Keith was a casual friend of Pete, John and Pete had a solid friendship, and Roger had reason to dislike John and Keith.
Roger punched Pete in the face on stage, knocked him out cold, and sent him to the hospital. Pete may have liked him, but they had a rocky relationship.
To "givebackrankflv" - I couldn't agree more. I could happily watch Keith all the time and not really bother with the others. No disrespect to them, but I am so fascinated at the mind behind those drum riffs, and how the hell he played them (it boggles my tiny mind) that I could watch him all night and never get bored.
The Who is the best! There one of the first bands i started listening to. They totally inspired me to play guitar and listen to all rock! Its a shame that Kieth and the Ox died ;( that just makes me sad... Long live what remains of the Who!
Holy fuck! The who is my fav. band but lately ive been listening ti RHCP. I just decided to check out the who from the isle of wight (cause it was a legendary show) and I love em now!
what's with Pete and Keith around 6:40? I positively cannot understand a word. Did Pete really hit Keith, cause Keith looks kinda mad afterwards...? guess that violent energy sent out turned back on them every once in a while...
No, no... that's their version of Marx bros. type comedy. Those 2 did that stuff a lot. Keith would act up and Pete would have to 'straighten him out'... Just silliness is all.
Wish I could help, ilm2tdid, but all I can understand is Pete saying "According to you...BRANDY!" to Keith regarding the song "Water." (ROFL!) But I think the slap in the head was just a joke. And hysterical. :-)
I love Pete in his white boiler suit days...hell, i love Pete all the time! Great song! i love The Who! John, Keith, Roger, and Pete were so bad ass together!
12stringsforme....I like that name (it's gotta be a Ricky, right?), but comparing Moon to Bonham is like comparing apples to oranges. Both were awesome but totally different in style.
this marks for me the begining of the greatest era of the greatest rock band ever..at any stage through the 70's they were an awesome outfit..even in 79 with kenny..

Love the video, thanks for posting! THE WHO were the best rock band in 1965, and may still be the best.

@whotwo I listen to many bands even some thrash metal bands like Testament.
Humble pie, Deep purple, Black Sabbath,AC/DC ,Rainbow, Zeppelin,Metalica, Metal Church,Whitesnake,Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, you name it.
No band stands neck and neck with The Who. The Who are a band used by all others to measure their own self worth.
Best in 1965 and still are and will forever be the best.

Aw, 1:24-1:30 makes me smile. Happy would-be birthday Moony!
Your description certainly doesn't lie. This was Isle of Wight 1970, wasn't it? A brilliant song by a brilliant band.
RockNRollRanter 3 years ago
This is from the Isle of Wight festival, yes.

This was a great era, but I REALLY love the videos of the big stadium shows from 1974. I think they peaked during that US tour.

what's with Pete and Keith around 6:40? I positively cannot understand a word. Did Pete really hit Keith, cause Keith looks kinda mad afterwards...? guess that violent energy sent out turned back on them every once in a while...
ilm2tdid 3 years ago
No, no... that's their version of Marx bros. type comedy. Those 2 did that stuff a lot. Keith would act up and Pete would have to 'straighten him out'... Just silliness is all.
j4bologna1998 3 years ago
Just antics. These two had the same sense of humor and played off each other.
Exilemainstreet 3 years ago
Wish I could help, ilm2tdid, but all I can understand is Pete saying "According to you...BRANDY!" to Keith regarding the song "Water." (ROFL!) But I think the slap in the head was just a joke. And hysterical. :-)
RockNRollRanter 3 years ago
Pete says "Or in The 'Oo - brandy!", as in that's what they call water in the Who.
Underture 3 years ago
Oh, is THAT what he said? Sorry, my bad!

12stringsforme....I like that name (it's gotta be a Ricky, right?), but comparing Moon to Bonham is like comparing apples to oranges. Both were awesome but totally different in style.

Kieth never used a high hat--Roger's tambourine did that.
mrmott44 3 years ago
well actually thats not entirely true. he used them a lot in the studio and he added a hi-hat to his kit as a permanent fixture in the mid seventies
metallideth83 3 years ago
correct- he also used them in the early days as well
mrskeithmoon 3 years ago
fucking brilliant

this marks for me the begining of the greatest era of the greatest rock band ever..at any stage through the 70's they were an awesome outfit..even in 79 with kenny..
dougm1971 3 years ago
I defy anyone to look at this and claim John Bonham was the better drummer.
Zep were great but they were not capable of this kind of tight energy.
12stringsforme 3 years ago 3
I agree completely!

This is a beautiful performance however i think A Quick One (While He's Away) from Rock'n'Roll circus is their best one! I love Entwistle's suit!!!

KeithManishOvErDoSe 4 years ago 3
i think its kinda funny that keith doesn't even have a high hat for this show.

i have this DVD, its my all-time favorite by the who. however i do think that their preformence of a quick one in the RnR circus was better.
