@99cacahuate Lol.. If it was called "Americas" back when the INdians ruled the land, then yea i agree with you.. If it was the white man who called it the Americas..or renamed it Americas.. then I guess you're wrong..
@99cacahuate STFU.. i'm not trying to be politically correct here.. YOU should have called them the Indigenous people then.. NOT native AMERICAN.. bitch ass!
@superduperboyx IT'S TRUE BUT ONCE AGAIN HISTORY THAT SCHOOLS TEACH IN US NEEDS TO BE CHANGE..............then gringos wont have call us immigrants,alliens,hispanics-latinos or illigals if thats the fact......
I went swimming in it too..and so did 100's of other people at the time it was packed. apperently in the olden days this was a hole they used to throw the dead bodies down
I swam in this and I even swallowed water when I jumped off the highest ledge and I didnt get sick or catch anything. It was amazing. Theres a sign outside that says "Swim at your own risk." I took the risk and it was well worth it. One of the best experiences of my life.
i just went to this cenote like last week! beautiful... i want to revisit mexico again one day.
but i dont know what everyone is saying about this cold and sickness nonsense. i swam here, jumped of the highest ledge, accidentally swallowed some water, and found the water to be a nice temperature and came out feeling great :D
Thanks for posting this, our underwater-camera was lost shortly after our visit there so I'm glad to see this up on YouTube. I loved that cenote, so beautiful.
wow i cant believe i found a video of this! i just went here last friday. i jumped off that ledge you are on like 10 times, yet it always hurt my feet!
this place is so much fun! even though the water is 68 degrees!!!
I went back in 2006, and again as recently as last week. (returned from Cancun just a few days ago!) Of course had to visit the pyramids and this, my favorite cenote.
I noticed there were FAR more tourists this time and I could barely get around even in the water...it was so dissappointing....
I have also swam in that cenote and it was also one of the highlights of my trip to mexico but even video's cant show how beautiful the cenote actually is the water is so blue and fresh it's amazing.
The Giardia Lamblia is chlorine resistant, so people might get it from the swimming pools as well. My advice, keep you mouth shut. Do not drink or eat raw veggies or fruits if you are not sure they have been properly treated. And enjoy the cenote experience. Those waters are constantly renewed by subterranean rivers.
there were 7 of us who went in. none got sick. we jumped off the high edge. i guess europeans have weak immune systems. maybe you should try eating a your steak a little rare. live a little.
I went swimming there last year and I was, even after touring most of the Yucatan penninsula, in great health during and afterwards. A bunch of my friends jumped off that ledge all at the same time several times. It was a bit scary though seeing as there was no bottom to it, freaky. xD
Thanks for your comment, I'm glad I didn't go swimming. Who knows what caused it but it seems like to have been a result of your swim in Ikil. It's not the same as a pool with chlorine, or a lake or river with it's natural cleaning system. Again, i hope it serves as a warming to others.
Hi Sheds, thanks for the enlightened response to my comment. As you say, the idea is simply to warn people that just because it is in the guide book does not mean it is safe. I thought it was a beautiful place and followed the guidebook (Dorning Kindersley Top Ten in Yucatan) suggestion to swim - big mistake! I'm sure if you were a local, or aclimatized, you would be fine - but for a European just out of Europe - oh boy!
@Sheds1127 I live in Yucatan, and I´ve swan hundreds of times in cenotes. I can assure you, there are more bacterias in a swimimg pool than in a cenote. Of course, as you know in Mexico we do not drink water from the top, so this is not an exception, the water in the cenote is not "drinking water". Other than that, they are one of the most pure places on earth. All cenotes are conected between them, and have conection with the ocean, so they DO have natural cleaning system.
@Sheds1127 wtfck? ur wrong i went swiming plenty of times there but tell you what u must b one of those delicate people that get sick for no reason,, ur not for wild life, go and walk in your carpet and turn on ur air vaporizer
After swimming here I came down with Giardia Lamblia. This cleared up after 2 treatments with Tinidazole. I did not get better and was diagnosed with Dientamoeba Fragilis - finally eradicated using Metronidazole and Paromomycin. Mean time I still have joint pains due to reactive arthritis. I cannot be sure that I caught these parasitic protazoa at Ikil, but it does seem extremely likely given that they are typically water borne infections. Both result from fecal contamination.
You are a fucking turd. I went swimming in that thing last year the only reason you would get sick from it is cause the water is freezing cold. Get the Fuck outta hea! with that shit you fucking idiot!
@DopeBoi101 Thank you man. I also went 1 year and a couple of months ago. It was really beautiful. And for this asshole to come and say it isn't safe, fuck him, he must be one of those pussies who has a low immune system. Even then this place is naturally clean. The water was nice clear and there were fishes.
a dream

The comments about yanks are funny since the Tinidazole and Paromomycin are not medications used in the United States.

its funny how whites kill 95% of the Native Americans and then talk about how much American they are more than the so called Mexicans....
