it was clearly already warm as well as pre set to top dead center.also there is a compression release you can get for these bikes. i have a 96 kx500 without compression release and you cannot kick it like that i dont care how warm it is. i normally on a cold start do about 3-4 priming slow kicks then a top dead center slow kick followed by the starting kick and it starts like a charm. when warm just tdc and a good kick and its ready to go.
@cranberryfool have you ever raced with a desert tank? when I turn i sit way to the front. it makes it easier, for me. so yea i hit my balls every once and a while.
@JBlinky67 Older yamahas from the 70's had a manual release. My 96 kx 500 is going in for a compression release install in the head. I'd bet the bike on this video has one. It starts like a "phucking" 250. lol. Either that or this fellow has the leg strength of power lifter. I'd like to fly him up here to manitoba and try to start mine. it starts like a "phucking" 500.
@pumper1970 Yes, but not since before air-cooling went bye-bye have we seen any kind of comp release on any 2stroke. And just what is yours going in for? What do they do to the head exactly? I've had a very hard time finding a comp release kit or info in general on the 'net. I've owned both CR's and KX 500's and it's really a matter of technique that helps. Post some pics when you get it back.
@JBlinky67 A machine shop in winkler manitoba, which i found on a classified site, will insert the release into my head. It pulls out to start bike, and automatically snaps shut when bike starts. The shop owner has done many many bikes, mostly cr's as they are more common, but says mine is easy as well. He says the worst part is cutting,threading,and sealingof plug. Bike will be able to run on the ice next winter again!
@JBlinky67 The company name is millars, i'm sure a reputable shop which knows harleys can help. The same company which is doing mine, has done high compression harleys to ease starting. I'm 40 now and don't need to brag to the boys how i can start my 500! I can start my 125 by hand, and don't trust my 500 to start, especially after riding and feeling a little tired miles from the truck.
Theres no big secret to this..(Actually any experienced dirtbiker knows how he did this) Find Top Dead Center (TDC) and kick a hair after it. I have a Yamaha XT600 and thats how i start it. Try and kick the KX500 over on the compression stroke, now thats a different story. Right zydecobro you setup the bike so that when u hopped on it she was all ready to start.

they spun the motor to the right spot beforehand. thats all. the bike is tits and id bet the compression is high as hell. its just tuned right. look at dudes leg. he dosent even lean into it at all. i dont care how perfect your 500 is. you gotta use at least a little elbow grease to kick one...
Makes sense about freshly cleaned carb. Mine started in 2 kicks dead cold. Cleaning residue and a clean plug do wonders. Lets try a flipflop kick after 50 miles and the bike cooled down to where you may need the choke/may not. That is the moment of truth to fouling/glory!! Happy trails to all.
finally someones gets it, yes your right its spot on jetting, high octane gas mix, an not to mention its a brand new engine so low compression theory is thrown out an no compression release so that is thrown out, just make sure that when you try the flip flop kick that you have a newly cleaned carb spot on jetting an high octane fuel an a new plug factory gaped
that doesnt mean you have low compression..i had a 2008 kx250f less than a week old and i could start it with my hand its just spot on jetting clean plug and higher octane gas if you feel like it

they spun the motor to the right spot beforehand. thats all. the bike is tits and id bet the compression is high as hell. its just tuned right. look at dudes leg. he dosent even lean into it at all. i dont care how perfect your 500 is. you gotta use at least a little elbow grease to kick one...

Bike sounds mean but you need to paint the frame a more appropriate color and change to volcano gas tank.

Makes sense about freshly cleaned carb. Mine started in 2 kicks dead cold. Cleaning residue and a clean plug do wonders. Lets try a flipflop kick after 50 miles and the bike cooled down to where you may need the choke/may not. That is the moment of truth to fouling/glory!! Happy trails to all.

finally someones gets it, yes your right its spot on jetting, high octane gas mix, an not to mention its a brand new engine so low compression theory is thrown out an no compression release so that is thrown out, just make sure that when you try the flip flop kick that you have a newly cleaned carb spot on jetting an high octane fuel an a new plug factory gaped

that doesnt mean you have low compression..i had a 2008 kx250f less than a week old and i could start it with my hand its just spot on jetting clean plug and higher octane gas if you feel like it

i inquired at a local dealer. accu-products carries a comp.release, will inquire for my bike. I'm going outside to lean on my kicker. Good thing my wife knows cpr.
