I think some might agree that we listen to music for it's cathartic effect on our own personal problems. Catharsis is way to heal and move on in a positive light. His obsession consumed him and eventually brought his own downfall.

If you listen to "High Times" on New Moon, he sings, "Don't pick me up, I'm fine right where I am". That made people pay attention into his craft. He just sang and wrote in such a graceful fashion that gives us a reason to "not move on", so to speak.

Who said he isn't legendary? His music is loved by people all over the world. For proof, just look at all the comments on the videos of his music, or better yet, the memorial wall in Los Angeles, which has been visited by so many people that there is hardly enough space to write on it anymore (and I'm speaking from experience). I actually got to meet Elliot months b4 he died. It was backstage at The French Kicks show in L.A. He was so shy, my friend was talking to him. I was way too shy to talk to him other than hi. He was really interested in starting a foundation for abused children, he gave my friend all the info on a napkin (her husband works in the industry). It was so touching that it meant so much to him and he wasn't interested in talking about anything else.
