@captzdc The backstory goes that Conniff couldn't get a gig in the music biz after arranging for big bands. He took a job as a laborer. Someone, I think it was Mitch Miller, tracked him down and through some experimentation, Columbia Records came up with the S'Wonderful arrangements.
The demise of the music world was planned all along. It was no accident. Along with art, fashion, values, beliefs and just about everything else that's happened since the sixties! Ray Conniff and others in that sphere helped to make life worth living.
While all my friends in the 50s were listening to the beginning of Rock, I was listening to the likes of Ray Conniff. I had several of his LP 45s, which were the best. In 1956 I was 15 and still trying to form my own 'thing'. What refreshing mucis this was to a young listener's ears. This was great stuff, back in the day.
@SmokefromKnob I was 6 in 1956 and have wonderful memories of my mother playing Ray Conniff albums on the Hi-Fi while she cleaned house and when she and my father entertained guests...
Can any of you remember Jimmy Saville's Double Top Ten Show? It used to be on BBC Radio 1 on a Sunday afternoon, starting 1:00 p.m. It started in the early 1970's & was still going in the mid 1980's. It had about 4 theme tunes over the years and this was one of them. Another was "The In Crowd" by Ramsey Lewis.
Anyone remember what the others were? The first was an American Civil War type tune
@craig197 What a funny comment!!!!!!....so out place, but so true. Actually i have been wanting to make a comment like that but i never had the nerve to pull the triger......hahahahahahahahahahah...!
@bvb7589 thanks for the compliment lol! Dont be afraid what to say on Youtube because most people dont give a shit like me included. After all its not like the Iranians are going to hang you for expressing yourself lol.
@bvb7589 im not really much of a Ray Conniff fan, but this is nice. Im more of a Herb Alpert And The Tijuana Brass fan. Conniff is too Lawrence Welkish for my taste.
What a great happy tune. Wonderfully done by Ray and his singers. Well their dresses and hair sure improved on the video On the Street Where you Live.
I just had to add this to my Conniff favorites playlist. It's the first of over 1200 songs Ray recorded during his career. this is only the 14th song on that playlist, even though I love nearly all the 300 other Conniff songs I've playlisted.
Even Ray could outdo himself. This song is amazing in that it comes to a complete STOP in the middle, like the eye of a hurricane, it is silent, and then the song restarts full force again, simply amazing ! ! ! ! ! ! !
@CanadaguyRudey A final se está analisando a música ou temos estilista de modas hehehe. Cada cabecinha. As meninas pelo menos se vestiam hehehe e as vadias de hoje tantas e já nem se vestem hehehe.
@CanadaguyRudey Hi, I couldn't agree more. Me too I think todays style is sloppy. There is no more pride today.I rather have the 70s stye anytime. Take Care!|
The title song from Ray's first album in 1956, still fresh in this performance 17 years later, and fantastic yet today ! ! ! If you watch Ray, he is having the time of his life in EVERY performance -you seldom see such joy in an entertainer ! ! Danke, Manfred - are you coming to Attleboro for the big event on 27th August?
As of this writing, Jackie Allen is alive, living in the Los Angeles area. It was reported that she was performing as recently as last year, having returned from an engagement in Japan.
That's very good to know. We should then make an effort to find her. Manfred Thoenicke should know about it for he is the president of the Ray Conniff fan club
Apart from that she was that kind of soprano fortíssima who could never be substituted for she had all the metal a voice could have and also a wonderful breath control and wonderful diction.
All in all, she had all the qualities the ones who tried to imitate her did not have. Her coppertura was fantastic.
THIS IS REALLY MUSIC.

At that time, the singers had to BE singers. Nowadays knobs and buttons do the job.
Alce2008 1 month ago
@Alce2008 Exactly. You had to have real talent then and they did unlike the crap we have now.

@Strawberry7Lynn Might have been "The Man I Love" by Ted Heath. Rough guess, as it was used for "Savile's Travels".
