I don't understand the ending. The one-armed man, he found peace with his existence, and turned away from the phoenix...but why did she cry? Did he promise if she ever appeared to him that he would go away with her and leave this world when he was younger and hateful?
It should be hard to explain with just 500 words. 1st which guy you mean? 1st or the last one? I recommend to watch this one, if you are lucky you can still find it on torrent around the Internet. So far this one was the best of the entire serie, or I should say, stories, since they are independent to each other.

火の鳥、ブッダは子供の頃集めて未だに家にある。彼のマンガだけだなずーっと売れないのは。我王の表現のところ原作以上に雰囲気出てていいね。涙出る。あまりにも偉大な手塚治虫。今はマンガを描くにも人類としてというか、一本筋の通った考えを持ってるなってのあんまりないね。本当はどうかとか関係なく、虫に生まれ変わるってのによって普段何気なく殺した命にもどれだけの奇跡が宿っていたかっていう事を知るよね。こういうのって子供にとってすごく大事な事だ。それが果ては人間同士の尊重につながる。動物を簡単に殺せる人は人間も簡単に殺せるようになる。連続殺人の前兆を見てもそうだと思う。こういう作品が世にある事に感謝する。

手塚治虫の残した物があまりにも偉大な為
今の漫画家は命を題材にした漫画を書く事に躊躇している様にさえ感じる

最初見た時、火の鳥の美しさに、シンセにゾクゾクして、イントロに目頭が熱くなり、我王がテントウムシ見て速魚さん思い出すシーンで涙が溢れ、２番の歌詞に大泣きしました十数年経っても、この感動は変わりません

I hate to express my ignorance, but what exactly happened to the guy? Did he sacrifice himself to the Phoenix or something?
I have read one of the books, but it wasn't the last one, so that's why I am unaware of what was going on.

Akanemaru is dying in the fire of the temple, so he sees the phoenix before to die as he wanted, but ironicaly he did,nt want to die.
