The built-in cutter is handy but does require a bit of firm pressure to get it to work right. In my experience using firm, evenly applied pressure from the start to the end of the cut will yield the best results. No need to re-position the blade or material for additional passes or cuts. The way it is designed though it can get in the way of eyeballing your cuts or trimming areas as well as interfere with the output of your laminated projects.
I got mine from a Joannes craft store. You can also go to the Xyron web site to see where to get them. You might be able to buy it straight from them. The machine does take some practice, though not much. The best way to use them is to crank slowly & evenly until the product has been moved completely through the machine. Stopping midway might leave crease marks. Getting a cart to start can also be a bit tricky. Sometimes the leader edge isn't fully aligned.
The next tip I have is to hold the machine in place by putting your palm on the top of the unit while cranking with your other hand. It does slip around if you do not secure it in some fashion to your table top. I use this machine to laminate my hand-made business cards before cutting them apart on my 12" wide bi-directional cutter. This is a time consuming way to make cards. It is cheaper & more versatile than a card slitting machine. From 50 feet of laminate I get 500 cards.
I believe the laminate is acid-free. That is a terrific boon for anyone who wants their laminated objects, art, etc protected. If you are printing with UV inks or pigmented inks then do so on acid-free papers. This way the paper, the inks, and the lamination now work in conjunction to give your creation a longer life span. Assuming of course that you don't leave the art exposed to direct sunlight or heat 24/7 for thirty-five years like the US constitution was :)
I have this machine. The sticky cartridge is sticky adhesive on one side only. The clear plastic film that you see is simply a throw away layer. If you want your stickers to be waterproof your best bet is to use a printer that features waterproof or near waterproof inks.
Usually pigmented inks will suffice for casual use. Another way to get waterproof stickers is to laminate them. I believe Xyron makes a laminate/sticker cartridge to protect the label side.
