I love her vocal rendition of this song <3Its more straightforward, less I'M WAILING IN PAIN then other renditions. This is more of a soft, sad inner monologue.
I have to say, it actually does make sense that she is smiling during some parts of the song, like when she's thinking about Cosette's father.. and also, smiling while singing is a technique used by singers to get a brighter sound, and especially for broadway singers, it helps their voices carry.
Proper technique is actually an "inner smile" which is an inner lift under the eyes and cheek bones for forward facial resonance. The jaw must be released (the space of two fingers) but the greatest amount of space should be "back space" with the tongue gently resting behind the bottom teeth and the soft palate naturally raised. The "smile" technique is used primarily in musical theatre (especially in graduates from U. of Michigan lol) because it creates a forward, bright, "Broadway" sound
I don't think the smiling is an effect of characterisation. The 'smiling effect' I think comes more from her vocal placement. Many vocalists are encouraged to raise their cheeks when they sing as it focuses the voice, creating resonance, clarity and an added 'ping' to the tone. It also makes it easier to modulate the dynamics and blend the registers when the voice is placed high around the face. It is referred to in singer's shorthand as 'placing it in the mask'.
if you look in her eyes and the forehead you can see that it isn't so much a smile.
what is happening there is she has to, in order to sing this, open her mouth a LOT that way she can get the proper vocalization. It really can't be done, especially the high notes without the mouth open so it gives off the appearance of smiling

Sings great, has a constipation face whether she's in a happy recollection or the sad present. The song/role needs more of a classic approach; she's too "pop" with her constant scooping of notes.
She's such a perfect Fantine!
