When I first heard this tune, I thought,"God damn, Diana Ross got her head out of her ass and reunited with The Supremes!" Alas, I was brought down to Earth. Nice tune, by the way.
This song came out when I was in high school. It's on the 70s Show CD.
The Supremes influence was obvious. But their success was killed by disco. The "Sound of Philadelphia" only lasted a year - 1974. Ironic that Gamble & Huff - who wrote this, their only hit, were later indicted for plagarism - a common complaint about soundalike disco music. But this song, though pre-disco, wasn't - no drum machines. It really was the last gasp of the old Motown sound. The only survivors were the Jacksons.
FylthyBeest....and I respectfully agree with you. I had the pleasure of seeing both acts back in the day and they were both very good. I just feel like the Three Degrees had more going for them.
amo esta canción y a estas bellas damas, era tan solo un adolecente cuando la escuche por promer vez en una fiesta a la que mi invito mi amada amiga Alicia. que Dios te bendiga hermosa amiga. atte. Lennon itzcoátl
I don't know why people mention the three degrees in the same sentence as the supremes. There is no way that the supremes could match up to the three degrees who had so much more going for them. They danced better, sang so much better and much more gorgeous. Sheila is so amazing and beautiful.
It doesn't get ANY better than that. 3 times I've been hit for having a dropped jaw....once was my mother when I was in my pyjamas in 1975 seeing these queens. The other times were when I was a grown man.
I remember watching the Three Degrees on Top of the pops performing this song. I was totally entranced by the beautful soulful sound that came out of the TV and mesmerised by the stunning Sheila Ferguson, she looks great here and still looks fantastic today.
Quite possibly the greatest song of the 70s (and that's no small claim). :) Love this live version...the only thing missing is her Diana Ross impression toward the end of the record (which I always get a kick out of).
Again, Amen to that. These are three of the Classiest Chicks you will ever see singing and dancing. Every time I hear them sing it takes me to Church.
Driving nostalgia back in droves. One of my Sunday favorites back in the 80s! I can still recall the voices of Ngozi Ibegbu or Uju Anyaduba then at ABS, signing out with this or other sweet tunes.
U know what I just realized, in dreamgirls how the dreametts were made to immulate the supremes, I really believe that the dreametts performances were also inspired by these ladies, seein how they dance, and pose more than the supremes... This performance also looks exactly like the last scene in dreamgirls, check it out...
BE MY SON AND PREFERRED GROUP, wonderful voices and a sympathy ABSOLUTE, SOPHISTICATED LADIES AND TIME SO SIMPLE AND BEAUTIFUL, MY RESPECT TO THE MISSING AND THEIR ETERNAL REST, WILL BE BEAUTIFUL SINGING THEIR SONG FOREVER AND ALWAYS
This song really sometimes makes my eyes both watery and this song almost makes my eyes watery and it nearly makes you cry, because it makes me sad, it really does as that's why this song almost makes my eyes watery and it nearly makes you cry, feel all blue and very lonesome and this song really makes my eyes feel watery. I don't really much care for that song as this is such a sad song as this is sometimes the saddeest song ever, it really is! :(
I'm not sure how deep the love you shared w/ her went. But, if you look within, you'll find the answer. Moving on doesn't mean you'll stop loving or remembering her. I feel for ya, man. If I lost my lady, it would be extremely difficult to move along. It's possible though. I know I'm getting off the subject here (which is this song). But, that's the power of a beautiful tune.
hey sorry for ur lost but to be honest life goes on and im realy sure that she want u to move on and enjoy ur life i have a girlfriend that lives far from me and i wounder when will i see her again realy
Sorry to hear about your wife. I imagine xmas was tough, but new year, new beginnings. It's tough. Time doesn't heal, but you learn to deal with the loss better. The best way to honour your wife's memory is to be happy.
so sorry to hear it -- grieve as much as you need to, reach out for comfort, and maybe in a year see if you are ready to move on - nobody can replace your wife, but you are still alive, and have a right to happiness - it could never be the same, but it will be the next chapter in your life, which is something to look forward to
This was "our" song when we first met in 1974 - we both cried when we heard it again on the radio in June, 1998 - it was the last time we heard it together. He passed away 4 days later and I still miss him to this day.
Its really a special song. Sorry about your loss but the memories must be beautiful and rich. I wish I could have 24 years with someone I love - I am 38.
This is what Sheila's say about the most suscefull song:
"Sheila Ferguson recalled that "the song was played to me by Kenny Gamble at the piano in 1973 and I threw a tantrum. I screamed and yelled and said I would never sing it. I thought it was ridiculously insulting to be given such a simple song and that it took no talent to sing it. We did do it and several million copies later, I realized that he knew more than me."
@TomthatiscalledTom also, today's music is filled with a generation that glorifies thugery and many females think it's cool to be a bad boy. It makes me sick to have to put up with it. But the music in the 70's with Motown etc was never that way. It's difficult to find any purity in today's females, esp younger ones. My own kids surprised me by the things they did after they turned 18. My wife and myself were both very conservative when we were young. But not my kids.
@analiticaluser And the really tragic and pathetic thing is that the genuinely think they are being 'liberated' by copying all the worst aspects of bar-room, punk-ass males. I suppose it's a waste of time in pointing out that the drinking, drugging and slut behaviour can only have two results: they'll wise up and for the rest of their lives they'll be nauseated and ashamed remembering a wasted youth. Or they'll wind up in abusive relationships and with substance abuse issues. No equality then!
Amen, Women were women back then all three of these ladies were classy and beautiful. If I may be bios for a moment...I think Valleri was the most beautiful. But an easy arguement can be made for either one. Oh, they are so great!
Oh c'mon Tom, these stunning women are no different to the sirens of today. The Three Degrees are probably the most beautiful and shockingly sexy women of all time. But look around at their stunning and shockingly gorgeous antecedents....Ofra Hazi, Shakira, even a white girl like Chrissie Hynde or the beauty of the voice of the most wonderful Joan Armatrading. It can't be compared to anything.
Fayette Pinkney is on the left as you look in this clip, middle is Sheila Ferguson and right is Valerie Holiday, the "classic" line-up (they've had a few and Valerie is still going in TTD)
I do not know if they were on the Motown label, but stylistically, this was one of the very last motown hits, just before disco took over. They were definitely a motown style act, standing in a row, dressed beautifully, singing harmonies to an orchestral backing. This song reminds me of my First Love.We had on and off relationship.
On March 10, we had a dinner after a reconciliation. On our way home,
I asked him "When Will I See You Again?". With a laconic answer, he
said that was my favorite song. Little did I know that was the last time
we were together. Seven years after, I still keep on asking myself,
when our paths would cross again.
