Meh, too much light, too many wall backdrops... The characters should be drowning in darkness. No ambient light, just flashlights. I know it would be hard to see the characters, but that's half of what made the Navidson Record work. The sense of claustrophobic darkness. And honestly, the actors just look bored. So meh. Someone should try this though, I reaaally want to see the Navidson Record in video (maybe try again?)
I tentatively give this a thumbs up. The acting was actually rather good it just could not recreate the feel of the structure, though whoever made this at least did not make it so all we saw was complete darkness. I would love to see a film version of the Navidson Record as I don't think a full House of Leaves movie is viable. This is a nice effort, but one would need a big budget to recreate the Grand Hall and Spiral Staircase. A very big one indeed to make it look like a real place.
For the budget you had, I think you did a solid job of showing Hook, Wax and Holloway's plight. A for effort, I'd say a D- overall, but that's only because of the budget.
If you guys had a good $60,000, this could be something really special.
I find it fascinating that young budding film-makers would tackle this as a project. Hopefully film will become more like the music business....less dependent on the suits and formula that have all but ruined Hollywood's reputation.
Amazing, I rather did like the use of the door at the end, the first shot scared the hell out of me though haha. Absolutly grate. I wish I could find more of these!
Also, I'm almost positive that the Pulitzer Prize winning Picture Navidson took of 'Delial' was based off of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize winning picture Taken by Kevin Carter. I don't know if you guys figured that out... Anyway. This is amazing. AMAZINGGG
I greatly appreciate what you've done here. I did picture the characters differently but that's expected. Also the firearm Holloway is carrying is different. The book repeatedly mention the crack of rifle fire. And the ash colored walls, of course. But those things aside this is how I pictured things. Seeing it is nice, makes the book feel all the more real.
@nicoleeriot Unfortunately, I had a budget of about $200 for this project, and renting a rifle is at minimum $300. I was kicking myself the whole time, but I just couldn't spend that much.
This excerpt is amazing. You've managed to accurately recreate what I imagined when reading that passage in House of Leaves. Absolutely stunning. The desolation and desperation felt by the explorers and the growing madness of Holloway is poignant without being over the top. The darkness smothers the film in a manner that is enveloping just so. I would never call it impossible to put impossible. They considered 'Watchmen' impossible to be put to film.
@Blacklemon67 It was a tough call, really. Technically, I shouldn't even have had people other than the characters filming it, but I had to make that decision, too.
@Launchbay07 I would have liked it much better if it were at least less obvious that the characters weren't filming.
For what is clearly a student project, it isn't bad; but the only moment I found at all compelling was when Jed and Wax mutiny-- it's the only part where the text on the page comes to life.
Anyway, keep it up; there's at least potential here. :)
Great job on trying, however I dont think House of Leaves should be represented through film. The sense of loneliness and darkness that you can imagine while reading the book, I dont think could ever be truely recreated through film.
i strongly agree with you. i loved the book, and it would be cool for them to make a movie. but there's no way they could make it close to as good without cutting out so many things. They could recreate it, but it would never be as good as the book. Unless Mark Z. himself directed it and did the casting.
@ZRDAUGHARTY Guess you didn't read the same book then, asshole! Bunch of dudes lost in a house that has impossible dimensions. MUST BE BASED OFF OF ANIMAL FARM.
And since I'm rambling anyway, the initial appearance of the hallway and its extension would really add to the video.
P.S. Navidson Record was awesome, the rest of HOL sucked. :)

not to say it's not good, the acting's great, but i think it should've been kept strictly handheld/

I commend you on your efforts. Great job. You made all the more real. (Though I do not know if this is a good thing or not.)

About as close as anyone can get to recreating the written work... Nothing ever could, but this is hella close

The acting is really good! I think by its very definition, though, the atmosphere of the house is impossible to recreate in film.

All too true
No visual recreation could ever possibly reach the power in the novel

Good job! But I don't think there should have been any camera cuts, and I think the jump cuts should have had no black space in-between

Unless of course, It was created by Danielewski, Or, Hell, Navidson.
