Would have been a freak accident like Kenny Bräck's today, but not fatal if there wasn't this lamppost standing in front of the catch fencing. No one else to blame but the circuit management.
Also the marshalling post is completely uncovered - Jesus...
IndyCars are ment to be so stable annd so strong the most crashes that look fatal the accually survive i was there to see that I thought he was alive but then... R.I.P Jeff Krosnoff
there is no way in hell someone could have survived that, typical redneck prepared race circuits, its the mid 90's and they still raced with exposed lamposts and sheath coated fencing. with 900hp turbocharged RC cars
It's not Stefan's fault at all. It's completely an unfortunate racing incident. The defining factor in the outcome was the light post and/or tree.
Accidents happen. You can't start crucifying drivers in non fatal 'accidents'. Just because one is fatal is down to more. The track safety wasn't as it could have been. That's the unfortunate reality.
Blaming another driver ahead of Krosnoff is really not nice.
Stefan Johansson is the driver of the car that turns into Krosnoff. Some may say it was just an accident, but it was caused by Johansson. He cut and forced drivers off all the time in his career. Sure he did not mean to kill anyone, but his actions caused this trajedy. It is a shame people have to die for others lack of talent.

i know what he's trying to tell and i agree with him. In formula 1 is a enourmes amount of money involved. More than in any other sport. In the case of a fatal crash in F1, the the driver will always be officially anounced daed when he's in the chopper to hospital or in the hospital itself. never on the track. Why? The money. That same reason(money) is the reason why monaco will always be on the F1 calender.

I've heard that the commentators remembered the past experiences of Jeff in Japanese Formula 3000 and Sport, alongside Roland Ratzenberger, killed 2 years before in the awful San Marino 1994 GP.
so many people celebrating two men's deaths! so disgusting! even if the don't know it exactly, they knew a severe accident has happened and they had to count with that.
the Japanese commentators are so emotionless like nothing special's happened.
Funkyduke, yes it seems insensitive, but Adrian Fernandez was just celebrating his first win, and there's no way any of the driver's could have really known it was a fatal wreck. I definitely see your point, but as any race fan knows, there have been so many horrific wrecks where the driver walks away, I bet many thought the race was simply called off because of the damaged fence and not the severity of the wreck (and maybe it was, who knows)?
tylertjp: ok mate, I see your point as well. I judged them a bit too harshly ("celebrating two men's deaths", well, actually even three have been killed as far as I know), my emotions were getting high at that moment. of course, they celebrate their success, but I think I would have acted in a different way. noone really knows it, but anyway see above...
Yeah, I know I would have acted in a different way too. I guess they just didn't think much of it, since most of the drivers didn't see the wreck as it was happening. But anyway, I'm pretty sure just the driver and 1 of the track workers were killed. It's hard to see, but I believe on the replay at 2:01, you can see one of his front wheels hitting the track worker in the head. It's too bad, because that part of the race track obviously wasn't safe enough for the drivers or the track workers.
Krosnoff's head hit the light pole when he was airborne, killing him instantly. It has nothing to do with the safety of the cars in this case. This is always a possibility with cars where the driver's head is exposed. The track worker was killed when he was hit with Krisnoff's right front tire, also when he was airborne.
With due respect if you look carefully his head never hits the light pole, rather on the previous impact against the concrete wall before he arrives at the pole, his open top is crushed on that blow. Oh, and by the way- no one is celebrating here.
Actually I've thought the same thing. It looks like the car hits the pole at about where his legs would be. From what I've read, it's been implied that his head hit the pole (I know, don't believe everything you read) but it is somewhat hard to tell exactly where it hit, since the quality of the video isn't very good, but your theory does sound pretty good, except I think his head hits after hitting the pole not before, and on the road and not the wall right at 2:03 when they show the replay.

Ok,you have a point there but still...it's scary! You've seen what happened to kenny brack! I can only wish for that much luck,he probably goes to church every day to thank god for his life! Thanx for replying
Yes, Monaco will receive its share of a Krosnoff type accident but business during the GP time is so incredibly high that, no matter what occurs, the race is assured of its lasting status in the F1 calendar.
Nomather wich protection you use to reduce the impact in the apereance of a crash, the impact will always be high. The second problem is the good old open wheel racing...If 2 different cars collide and the tyres hit eachother, the car will lift of like a missile..nothing you can do about it. Is american oval racing the most dangerous form of car racing, probalbly yes. Is it safe? the did their best..but accident can and always will happen.
That's a good question you ask there, and the answer is not that simple.
The first reason is rather simple...Speed.
When you let 25+ cars race at speeds around 220 mp/h atjust inches away from eachother, its about to go wrong. It's not a question if, but when... The speeds on american ovals are verry high, and therefore the impacts.
Therefore the impact whas verry intense, and the front of the car was completelly totalled. The result whas that Olivier broke his leg. If there whas only a concrete wall at that point, oliviers car would have slid along the wall, and the car wouldn't have been teared apart by the tyres.
Ok,I may say that I agree with you but only partialy. If what you say is true, and I honestly believe you,why are there so many cassulties and horrific accidents in CART and Indy Car? It is very risky to drive in america, much more than in europe.Anyway, thanx for the discusion!
The concrete walls are there for a reason. It depends on the angle of impact what is nessesery to safelly slow down a car. If the angle is low, a concrete wall is better because the car wil slide down the wall without any further damage.. If the angele is large..like a frontal impact, its better to have tire walls. Take for instance Oliviers pani's crash in formula 1 in canada, Montreal, in 1996. On that spot, he impacted the tyre wall.
I think that there is a serious problem with safety in C.A.R.T aswell as in any other racing sport in America. Here in Europe we think more about the lives of drivers than you do. You just want excitement and fun,but sometimes it can lead to a serious tragedy like this one! Rest in peace Jeff,we loved you here in Serbia!
Yeah, that's why we have so many Rally races in America. We love killing people. You are a misinformed fool, koritnica. The entire motorsports world (including Europe and America) is very saftey minded these days. Your comments are also disrespectul to those that died in this accident, which by the way is over 10 years old by now.
Please tell me what is the reason for you calling me a full? And what is so disrespectful in my comment. A FACT is that in america concrete walls are so near the track that it is imposible to avoid them when mistake occurs. I personally would like to see less people getting hurt, would you? Please do not call anybody a fool because you in usa don't have any right to anybody anything, you are the biggest terrorists in the world!!!
No problem, thanks for the kind words...anyway,I enjoy american motosports very much, but sometimes I just can't help thinking that some of the people on the grandstands only come to races to see people get hurt. Racing is fun, even crashes are fun,but no normal person wants to see someone get hurt or dead....anyway,thanks again
ya we have concrete walls at slow speed tracks like that one. we have safer barriers which are made of cushon stuff at our high speed ovals. the last fatal oval crashes were just unfortunate by way of cars crashing into other cars. our racing is very safe. ur a communist right?
Very, very sad. There was however one good thing. A women who was hit in the head by flying debris from Krosnoff's car survived with no long term effects. R.I.P. Jeff Krosnoff and Gary Avrin.
I remember watching this race and staying tuned to the golf tournament afterward to try and figure out what happened to Krosnoff. It's totally unfortunate that two Fernandez wins occurred on days when another driver lost his life. This was sooo sad.
The worst thing you can hit in any vehicle at speed is a tree!
It's been there for 50+ years and unless youv'e got a chainsaw..........IT AINT MOVING!!!

You are very naive if you think a driver will never die again in Europe. Also, if your in Serbia, why are you claiming Europe?

You might want to try geography, and than you'll know why Europe!

Koritnica, please forgive this dumbass "fellow" American, for he does not represent all of us :)

Cheers!

ya we have concrete walls at slow speed tracks like that one. we have safer barriers which are made of cushon stuff at our high speed ovals. the last fatal oval crashes were just unfortunate by way of cars crashing into other cars. our racing is very safe. ur a communist right?

Very, very sad. There was however one good thing. A women who was hit in the head by flying debris from Krosnoff's car survived with no long term effects. R.I.P. Jeff Krosnoff and Gary Avrin.

I remember watching this race and staying tuned to the golf tournament afterward to try and figure out what happened to Krosnoff. It's totally unfortunate that two Fernandez wins occurred on days when another driver lost his life. This was sooo sad.
