It's a real shame McNeil isn't writing the Ultras, I quite enjoy his current series. Here's to hoping Know No Fear helps to cure the fandom of some of the dislike and outright hatred of the Ultramarines created by the last several codexes.
@Tseuhadon That is pretty easy to ease aside, most are angry because their preferred chapter isnt the prime focus. Ultramarines are the focus because of their ameanably level nature in terms of game mechanics.
@Lysander45 I was an Ultramarines player until 2008, and i'm still furious at how they were presented in them. It wasn't as bad as what happened to the Grey Knights, granted, but it was still a horrible misrepresentation of the chapter. Not to mention reducing all other chapters to one statement: "They can never be Ultramarines".
It's better this way if you think about it. McNeil is writing about the chapter in "the current era" whilst Abnett will write about them 10,000 years earlier when they are still a legion. The difference in style will hopefully come out in the story so that the chapter is not just a mini-me version of the legion but a different organisation - which it should be.
@Catubrannos True, i'll not argue that point, but I just would have liked to see the person with the most experience in writing them handling their biggest role in the Heresy. I don't dobut that Abnett will produce something worth reading, but lack of experience in writing them did result in one of the lesser books of the series. Though i would be surprised if the Ultramarines have changed that much since the heresy.
They've always been by the book tacticians as far as the fluff goes.
They must have changed somewhat. Since the heresy they've lost their primarch (for all intents and purposes) and they are a unit of 1,000 or so rather than the 250,000 they were before. Those are two very big differences that would the way any group worked.
The thing I enjoy the most about the Horus Heresy series is even at this point after a handful of the BIG stories have been told such as Isstvan V and Prospero there are still so many smaller tales that you would have never thought of before they were told e.g. The First Heretic or Battle of the Abyss. And there are still from what I gather a reasonable amount of stories yet to come and characters to explore. I for one would like to see a story about Angron or Perturabo.
Thumbs up if you want Dan writing the final battle between Horus and the Emperor. Bring back Ollanius Pius!

Last book in the Horus Heresy should just be called "GOD-EMPEROR"

@HateMachine103190
That would make sense as the series should end after the scouring and the beginning of the open religion of the Imperial Cult and Ecclessiarchy.
