Damn...that f*ckin opening was just imagination? hahaha. Till this time cant convince myself its fiction and I think Eco just based this from history (from Adso), si---nevermind. Anyway sorry folks for being stupid...BTW check this out also... cool stuff..:
Interesting. In the transcript of the movie there is a character (a knight I think) saying (as the transcript writes it) "loos, schnell," probably at the scene where all the peasants toil pushing the cardinals' cabin up the slope.
I wonder if it was intentional to give the Inquisitors / Catholics German mercenaries in the film? They did say it was set in the "dark North of Italy."
Yes, I've read the book. Umberto was handed a volume written by a monk, but this book was only the source of inspiration for "The name of the rose". Besides, Eco has written more books than "The name...".
wtf?? I thought he just translated it from Latin to Italian... and Umberto wrote "and so I now free to tell, for sheer narrative pleasure, the STORY OF ADSO of Melk" which means Adso wrote it??? I'm not sure :o Anyway thanks for this
Umberto Eco simple joked. The entire novel is from his imagination. There was no Adso from Melk and the joke of manuscript was only a literature artifact to make more realistic the entire fiction. Surely if Eco started his book with "Once Upon a time..." you maybe felt like to read a fable and don't be captured, :-D !
The joke is continued at the beginning of the film, where they say the movie is a "palimpsest" of the original novel. A palimpsest is a page that has been partially overwritten or reused.

Hands down the best film showing the effects of the inquisition - ever!
My favorite movie since it was made. Finally wore out the VHS and bought DVD for myself a few years back.
The additional information following the film is fascinating as well.
