  • What kind of bulbs are those?

  • Haha, it's like if Biff had a nerd for a son instead of Griff.

    Good job.

  • metro pcs now has a 4g network

  • could you use the sun as one of those lights?

  • Indeed, but if you use tungsten bulbs as fills, use L201 or equivalent to match up the K° of the noon sun with your artifical light.

  • could you use the sun as one of those lights?

  • Was anyone else reminded of Trololo at 3:30? xD

  • What size of clamp lights are these???

  • Where do you get these ''Clamp Lights?'' I'm from the U.K and I can't find them any where. Please help me.

  • I love life!!!!!!!!

  • Me too!!!!

  • i think YOUR face annoys me!

  • his face annoys me, but this is good info. thanks mate!

    diy or die!

  • Ok, I easily found cheap clamp lights, but I'm not sure which bulbs to get (he said true color bulbs but doesn't say what wattage to get, or how much they cost) anyone can post a link to good bulbs I'd really appreciate it.

  • im no expert, but id suggest using 100 Watt Bulbs and installing dimmer switch boxes. That way you can go bright bright or adjust it down to fit what you need. I make 600watt dimmer switch boxes for 15 bucks apiece in about 10 minutes. actually cost of parts was 14.73 at walmart.

If you dont want to use dimmer switches, maybe you can just keep a big box of varying true color bulbs of different wattages.

    I hope that helps.

  • Very funny. Nice job.

  • i think steve is more funnier than eric

  • I picked up some 12" reflector (250watt max) clamp lights at Walmart about 10bucks and the

6" reflector (150watt max) for arund 7 bucks.

    Lowe's has a 101/2" Clamp Light 250 Watt fo around 13bucks a 81/2" for around 7.50 bucks and a a 5 1/2 for 6.50

I recommned 3 rated at 250 watt max. and 1-2 rated for 150 watt max.

  • I like using the spiral compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in the 5600k that are equivelant to a 150 incandecent light bulb. They are bright and colors are good in this light...if it is to bright a white 200 thread count pillow case over the light reflector will soften the light and not create a lot of heat, but still be cautious when doing this.

  • where did you get your clamp lights? i cant find anywhere that sells them for 7 bucks. someone please respond

  • Very helpful

  • Good tutorial. I don't agree with the 'always have the sun behind the camera though. Shooting into the sun can give great backlighting. Just use a little bounce for your fill.

  • insted of buying colour bulb just buy normal bulbs and rap them in coloured tissue paper

    or colour plastic

  • I wouldn't suggest this. It's a very easy way to burn things. Just use gels.

  • oh sorry mister no-it-all nah only joking cheers for telling me, i dont wanna burn anything lol thanks : )

  • I only said it because I've come close to melting plenty of stuff before. Gels work far better anyways. You can control your colour temperature with them. They clip onto these lights perfect too using a clothespin.

  • Elvislandia..are you saying that a PC( with required spec to do video editing ) is all that anyone needs to make a feature film? I have yet invested in a PC or a MAC bcos I just can't afford to buy something only to regret later. I keep hearing about MAC and PC's that just has me freaked out about buying either.

  • Adobe Premiere CS3 is a good software, i can not complain. if you`re in a low budget filming (most of us) forget about buying a Mac only to edit your video using Final Cut. Save money and use it in another film or getting more equipment or upgrading etc.

A good PC is able to do amazing things too.

Final Cut is just a software for Mac, does not do miracle but the filmmaker does. Use a good PC,nice camera and a perfect lighting that`s all.

  • Hi indymogul can you reply to a commint

    I posted a month a go.

    thank you

  • good luck with that

  • i currently made my first film, but ive always wanted to use green screens but i dont know how!do i need an expencive camera?or an expencive program? maybe someone can comment my page telling me everything i would need?that would be helpfull

  • well someones probably already told you how to use green screen but just in case, theres already a video on indymogul thats shows you how to use green screen and you can use any camera, best program would be final cut pro on the mac. not sure about windows

  • Hi I will be shooting a music video

in side my house can i use the blue light for

a Lady that will be Crying in the kitchen.

and how will a brown light look in a room with brown furniture with white walls and one green wall. the man will be asking GOD for forgiveness.

  • Great advice and piece on lighting. I picked up the clamp lights for about $5.75 each at Home Depot, thanks!!!

  • light question. i am working my way through all the videos so you might have one and i jsut haven't gotten there yet. if you are shooting greenscreen stuff what is good light placement?

  • place allot of lighting in the green screen. then some light on your actor.

  • His facial exprerssion at 1:38 are hilarious!

  • so where can I purchase this lighting kit?

  • HARDWARE STORE

  • Thank you so much. I was wondering how I could improve lighting without spending a ton. I'm not about to buy a $500 lighting kit for YouTube videos.

  • More expensive kits tend to be paying extra for a fire hazard.

  • looks like the ligthing was to bright...maybe a dark nylon would help soften it up...lOl im just saying

  • What is a good wattage of bulbageee?

  • Hey... I bought 3 clamp lights with bulbs and an 25' extension cord and it cost $76! Whats up with that!

  • lol random dancin

  • sweeet, this is very helpful advice.

  • If you're hankering for more power in your lighting, you can pick up waterproof work lights from large hardware stores. they sport 500 watt halogen lights and a "I can throw you off a building" look for around 20-100 dollars. With a little DIY modification you can add barn doors and gel slots for greater control and customization. Be careful though they get HOT.

  • it looks like the key and fill lights are equivalent--is there a distinction or could you interchange the names?

  • traditionally a fill light is supposed to be weaker than the key light to create more variety in tone and lighting so that you have more colour depth. You might want to use a lower wattage bulb for the fill light or maybe position it further away.

  • Thank you, it was really usefull thing.

  • good things happen to those who watch my videos

  • That was awesome, lighting has been one of my interesets in filming, and I have been wondering what cheep things I could do to get good lighting... Yeah.

  • this was the greatest indy mogul of ALL TIME!

  • I bought three six inch clamp lights. Is that a good size.

  • hey ya can you try to make a snow machian

  • Hi indymogelers i love your show and because you made a rain machian i need one for winter so can you make a snow machian ,thanks uh bye

  • now if only i had money

  • Wow awesome! Thanks.

  • What are your thoughts on rigging up fade/dimmer switches to this set up (like the supernatural way Michael Myers "appears" in a shadow in the Halloween films)?

  • didn't they also do that in the exorcist?

    I luv horror.

  • Go for it! I heard those dimmers can be potentially dangerous, but that could be an urban myth! Just be careful with lighting, it seems innocent, but electricity can be dangerous. But yea, that would be really cool, I'm sure!

  • Indeed dimmers can be dangerous.

It's mainly because they are made to retain electricity. It's about somekind of resistance with a variator that let pass more or less electricity.

But there's an effect that could be usefull for theatre that might get problematic in film making.

When you dim down a light, it tends to get warmer. A tungsten light bulbs looses hundreds of kelvins on the dimming. HMI aren't because the dimmer are somekind of flaps (dunno the word in english)

  • @indymogul steve loves potato salad

  • I think it would be worth trying. Ive been told that dimmer switches can have a loud hum so i wouldnt keep it anywhere near the microphone.

  • @StevenAtkins the only problem with dimmers is that they change the color temperature of the light...

but actually, we have dimmerized even 5k

  • I posted something that might interest you buddy :)

  • Here are few tips to keep K°s even when dimming.

There's a gel called Neutral Density wich is a "grey" gel that darkens your light. By this way, you don't change the K° and your light is dimmed.

Use CTB range of gels, to cold the K° to match your key light.

You can warm the key light by using CTO instead of cooling down fills.

To match odd sources like tungsten and camfire.

(1000000/2000k campfire) minus (1000000/3200k) = 500-313= 187 mired that indicates the matching CT to apply to lighting.

  • Hi, it will be great if you make a Ghostbuster proton pack. Thanks, your vids are great

  • I love life! ME TOO! XD

  • TY!

  • Everybody hurts xD hahha n1

  • I LOVE LIFE!

    lol

  • I'd like to know how you lit the very last bit of video...since that was the best lighting demonstrated.

  • The part in front of the blank white? Normal green screen & 3 light set up.

  • Very usefull.

    Thanks a lot !

  • That was so funny when Erik was like holding the knife and was acting like a psyco

  • keep up the uber work

  • you used garage band for the songs didnt you?

  • Soundtrack!!! I'm sure they share loops though.

  • Sweet. Now I can finally do lighting. All I need is $25. or I can sell my kidneys...

  • sweet volcom shirt!!! and great video i always had shity light

  • thanks!

  • AWESOME

  • another REALLY useful video.

  • wow

  • just what i wanted to see

  • thanks that was awsome

  • omg i wish they sold lighting that cheap in the uk

  • They don't have cheap clamp lights at the hardware store? They should, if not there's always the internet.

  • £40 online in the Uk thats about 80 dollars

  • exactly what i mean, why is the £ so expensive:(:(

  • It should also be noted that if you want to mimic outdoor lighting indoors, they sell bulbs now that have the same color temperature as sunlight. It appears more blue on camera than a regular light which appears orange...

But thanks for the vid. It should be required viewing for anyone that wants to make YouTube videos..

  • thats why he said to use "true color" light bulbs

  • AWESOME! Hey, how do I make a person look like a hobbit or an elf?

  • Green Screen. They have a tip on a cheap way to do it somewhere on IndyMogul. Think plastic green table cloths.....

  • Not backgrounds, like hair and facial changes.

  • thanks steve

  • thanks dude i didnt know i needed a light behind me and wonder why my stuuf always looked lighted funny with a light infront of me but i knew it was to ark with out it

  • if you wanna make it look dark then you cun put sunglasses in front of the lense it is a good efect for a horror movie

  • haha this is 4 min 20 sec long

    lol

  • always appreciated, always good info!

  • what do i do if i want to shoot outside at night, and not rely on night vision?

  • You can always shoot day-for-night. Just bring the camera down a few stops and make sure your lights are a lot brighter than usual. That is a good way to cheat things.

  • Yes, you can turn your exposure down. Or as I mentioned in the beginning, bring extension cords so that you can shoot outside at night with your lights.

  • a)Get a video camera that has a low light reach to less than 3 lux, maybe 0 or where you can boost the video gain in dB (similar to foot-candles). If the camera doesnt do this well you will get noise (looks like sand). b) Hide lights that look like landscape lighting but are really for your scene.

But remember, you have to have light to get image color!

  • very helpful

  • sawweeett
