Ok, I easily found cheap clamp lights, but I'm not sure which bulbs to get (he said true color bulbs but doesn't say what wattage to get, or how much they cost) anyone can post a link to good bulbs I'd really appreciate it.
im no expert, but id suggest using 100 Watt Bulbs and installing dimmer switch boxes. That way you can go bright bright or adjust it down to fit what you need. I make 600watt dimmer switch boxes for 15 bucks apiece in about 10 minutes. actually cost of parts was 14.73 at walmart.
If you dont want to use dimmer switches, maybe you can just keep a big box of varying true color bulbs of different wattages.
I like using the spiral compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs in the 5600k that are equivelant to a 150 incandecent light bulb. They are bright and colors are good in this light...if it is to bright a white 200 thread count pillow case over the light reflector will soften the light and not create a lot of heat, but still be cautious when doing this.
Good tutorial. I don't agree with the 'always have the sun behind the camera though. Shooting into the sun can give great backlighting. Just use a little bounce for your fill.
I only said it because I've come close to melting plenty of stuff before. Gels work far better anyways. You can control your colour temperature with them. They clip onto these lights perfect too using a clothespin.
Elvislandia..are you saying that a PC( with required spec to do video editing ) is all that anyone needs to make a feature film? I have yet invested in a PC or a MAC bcos I just can't afford to buy something only to regret later. I keep hearing about MAC and PC's that just has me freaked out about buying either.
Adobe Premiere CS3 is a good software, i can not complain. if you`re in a low budget filming (most of us) forget about buying a Mac only to edit your video using Final Cut. Save money and use it in another film or getting more equipment or upgrading etc.
A good PC is able to do amazing things too.
Final Cut is just a software for Mac, does not do miracle but the filmmaker does. Use a good PC,nice camera and a perfect lighting that`s all.
i currently made my first film, but ive always wanted to use green screens but i dont know how!do i need an expencive camera?or an expencive program? maybe someone can comment my page telling me everything i would need?that would be helpfull
well someones probably already told you how to use green screen but just in case, theres already a video on indymogul thats shows you how to use green screen and you can use any camera, best program would be final cut pro on the mac. not sure about windows
light question. i am working my way through all the videos so you might have one and i jsut haven't gotten there yet. if you are shooting greenscreen stuff what is good light placement?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
omg indy you didnt leave a warning not to smash the bulb against my own head, now I've hurt myself because you didnt add the disclaimer, and I'm going to sue you!!
(Tip: If people are so dumb that they dont know that light bulbs get hot, they shouldnt be viewing your tutorials, so just... Un-americanize the warnings please :P)
If you're hankering for more power in your lighting, you can pick up waterproof work lights from large hardware stores. they sport 500 watt halogen lights and a "I can throw you off a building" look for around 20-100 dollars. With a little DIY modification you can add barn doors and gel slots for greater control and customization. Be careful though they get HOT.
traditionally a fill light is supposed to be weaker than the key light to create more variety in tone and lighting so that you have more colour depth. You might want to use a lower wattage bulb for the fill light or maybe position it further away.
That was awesome, lighting has been one of my interesets in filming, and I have been wondering what cheep things I could do to get good lighting... Yeah.
What are your thoughts on rigging up fade/dimmer switches to this set up (like the supernatural way Michael Myers "appears" in a shadow in the Halloween films)?
Go for it! I heard those dimmers can be potentially dangerous, but that could be an urban myth! Just be careful with lighting, it seems innocent, but electricity can be dangerous. But yea, that would be really cool, I'm sure!
It's mainly because they are made to retain electricity. It's about somekind of resistance with a variator that let pass more or less electricity.
But there's an effect that could be usefull for theatre that might get problematic in film making.
When you dim down a light, it tends to get warmer. A tungsten light bulbs looses hundreds of kelvins on the dimming. HMI aren't because the dimmer are somekind of flaps (dunno the word in english)
It should also be noted that if you want to mimic outdoor lighting indoors, they sell bulbs now that have the same color temperature as sunlight. It appears more blue on camera than a regular light which appears orange...
But thanks for the vid. It should be required viewing for anyone that wants to make YouTube videos..

a)Get a video camera that has a low light reach to less than 3 lux, maybe 0 or where you can boost the video gain in dB (similar to foot-candles). If the camera doesnt do this well you will get noise (looks like sand). b) Hide lights that look like landscape lighting but are really for your scene.
But remember, you have to have light to get image color!

Indeed, but if you use tungsten bulbs as fills, use L201 or equivalent to match up the K° of the noon sun with your artifical light.

I picked up some 12" reflector (250watt max) clamp lights at Walmart about 10bucks and the
6" reflector (150watt max) for arund 7 bucks.
Lowe's has a 101/2" Clamp Light 250 Watt fo around 13bucks a 81/2" for around 7.50 bucks and a a 5 1/2 for 6.50
I recommned 3 rated at 250 watt max. and 1-2 rated for 150 watt max.

I posted something that might interest you buddy :)
Raphaeluberzor 1 year ago
Here are few tips to keep K°s even when dimming.
There's a gel called Neutral Density wich is a "grey" gel that darkens your light. By this way, you don't change the K° and your light is dimmed.
Use CTB range of gels, to cold the K° to match your key light.
You can warm the key light by using CTO instead of cooling down fills.
To match odd sources like tungsten and camfire.
(1000000/2000k campfire) minus (1000000/3200k) = 500-313= 187 mired that indicates the matching CT to apply to lighting.
