Amazing that Linda is so good for a first timer!!.. I've owned a cabinet shop for 15 years and have never seen a total noob blow the chips out after drilling a hole in a piece of wood, or hold the fixture so close to the rotating drill bit.. Can you say RINGER!!! not Rockler.
@dirtyal1234 Yeah, if you want cheap plastic pens made in China. Staples also sell Cross wooden pens for $40. I take it you've never had the enjoyment of making your own pen on the lathe. ...or maybe you're incapable of doing it. ...awww, so sad. HA!!!
It doesn't take a lot of money to get started. A friend of mine bought a Jet mini lathe at an auction recently for $50.00 and it was brand new never been opened!
I prefer to cut the blank on a bandsaw as it makes a smaller kerf and keeps the grain match of the wood more consisitant. I prefer 5 min. epoxy (or gorrilla glue if you can wait for it to set up), to glue the tubes in. CA glue is better left for use as a finish. Overall though this is an excellent example of how it's done!
A good video and I like the use of the cramp for assembly. As for cost you have to start somewhere and your lathe will pay for itself in due time if you sell other items made on yor lathe other than pens only. Pen making is as easy as it appears on this video. Well done!!
for some people that dont have a lathe you can put the mandel in a drill press and use a wood file to turn it down. I have made over 150 pens and I found its easier and faster using the drill press and file.
Do you or does anyone reading this have a Parker Vector Fountain Pen and / or a Cross ATX Chrome Pen .. if yes would you please do a review. please and thankyou the Vector sells for 23 the ATX Chrome sells for 60-70. ..
i'm currently saving up for a laithe...got 36 pen blanks...doing some at school as a extra project. this is a very good video but the girl is not doing that for the first time...she is an expert
you should always you paper towel to buff and aply finish if a thread get caught in the lathe it will wrap around your finger and cut to the bone trust me
yes, but PLEASE don't use a miter "CHOP" saw like he does... its a great way to get injured! Use a scroll or even better bandsaw with a fine tooth. The large teeth of the miter saw can easily cause a kickback.
nothing would happen if i mitre saw kicked back to wood would just get ruined and break its not like a circular saw or a table saw wear the whole saw orpiece of wood flies at you the miter is stationary
@southkillsall I found turning plywood dulls my tools extremely fast. I did make a hollow form out of glued up plywood once, but never again. Too much sharpening killed my gouge in no time.
Great video! Very comprehensive. What a fine workshop & tooling!
Try a little lower position of the toolrest, and lowering the handle of the chisel. You should be able to cut shavings off rather than scrape the blank.
Great video, where can I get the plans for your pen blank vise used with your drill press table?

Yeah, keep buying the chinese crap. You and many others are the ones that need their asses tossed out of this country.
Thanks for helping destroy our economy.

I don't want to be a dick, but is it really a big achievement to turn a cylinder of wood and stuffing it with some hardware of questionable quality?
I see the point if you already have a lathe and need to churn out a few personal gifts, but otherwise makes more sense to have someone do it in China.

I have two questions
1,What kind of Finish was used on the pen
2,Doesn't CA Glue need a activator to bond I have some here and have the glue and a little bottle that I spray on and bonds in 1 sec
Gazooo29 2 years ago
@Gazooo29 CA dries without accelerator, the accelerator just makes it set instantly, hence the name.
