I am a follower o Christ, but I know he was a man, I know the bible is not inerrant/infallible and written by men, I know evoloution happened and is happening, I don't believe that God is running the show like a cosmic puppeteer

Well, your Jesus Christ seems to be the one who re-invented Hell. Prior to Christ you went to Hell (Tartarus) for being really bad or trying to war with the gods, not for disbelieving in some absurd story.

Over time hell evolved (de-volved?) into something far more childish and absurd and manipulative of ordinary people.
