As far as i know you have to wait for the "Android 1.6 + Sense UI", which of course will be delivered by HTC.

Yes, you need the official firmware, at least to get the same user interface. Actually, the Hero will never get 1.6.. HTC decided to skip right to Android 2.0, which should be available as a free update sometime over new years :)

Android is basically a Unix/Linux system, so having root means you are a superuser on your phone and can do/change/mess up anything you want.

I love the spec on this phone just got it but the performance of it is awful. So much so I am thinking about sending it back to Orange. Android is the ultimate OS and the the build of the phone is great too but the power available is not there so it struggles. It also makes the 5MB Camera useless too. Its so slow it is barely usable. Why didn't the reviews tell me this I would have stayed clear. Maybe this fix will improve things but its clear the iPhone is the better performer.

Try installing, "Advanced Task Killer Free" and closing up some of the useless apps. I've had the HTC Hero for a week now and it's certainly not barely usable.

OK listen, there are a couple of things you can do to help.

1) Install a task killer, I recommend taskpanel (one word) and kill tasks. Every app runs in the background after you open it.

2) You can switch to standard android. You won't get HTC's sense UI, but you will get amazing speed. Go to App management in settings, find TouchFlo, go to it and press clear defaults. Now click home, and select Home and check the box under (set as default)

I love how iPhone users come here to attempt to justify why they think their phone is better and why it will always be better until the end of time.

Phones come and go and they get passed by newer and better models. Just because the iPhone was at one point the best phone on the market doesn't mean it always will be and the Hero is certainly doing enough to step on the paranoid toes of all iPhone owners.

it seems they've managed to boost up the performance by disabling the animation of the widgets. For example, the clock widget (minute changing widget) seem to be missing, same thing for the Internet Browser widget (earth not rotating anymore) and lastly the stock prices.

I find that disappointing.

Good thing too, multi-tasking is hardly needed.

The 3GS loads apps so fast that re-loading them is no longer an issue, IM clients that have push work just fine without truly running in the background.

it depends on what type of user you are, if you like to play iPhart and iBeer, then no you don't need multi-tasking if on the other hand you want you check your email, calendar and stocks without going to the main menu then the Hero is for you. for my part I'm getting the Hero but that's just me...

Multi-tasking isn't necessary, but I wouldn't say it's "hardly needed". It's DEFINITELY useful, For example, you're halfway thru writing an email and need to open up your contacts to find someone's snail mail address to send in that email, then you switch back to the email app.

It's not a deal breaker, but it IS quite useful. I've been saying that the iPhone is king of the roost right now (clearly), but Android is probably the one most likely to take that crown in the future.

I heared on a video from phonedog that the cpu is running at 384MHz while it is capable to run at 528MHz.. with this update does it run at full speed? coz it's kinda sad to not take full advantage of such a device..

It can run at 528MHz but running at that speed would drain the battery even more. I don't know if Hero is the same as other builds but if it is then it scales from 384 - 528MHz when the phone needs more processing power.

Had a question about 'Rooting' the HTC. What exactly does that do and what are the benefits vs the out of the box HTC you get? And would Rooting it void any warranty with the network you get it on?

rooting it means you enabled outside access to the "guts" of the machine. root access = pretty much the ability to do anything, by passing any restrictions that Android tries to put in. so rooting it will allow you to install stuff you're not supposed to (like apps that aren't approved).

rooting shouldn't void any warranties, but the problem is if you root it and do something wrong with root later, then you can totally mess up your phone's operating system. unlikely but possible.
