......futile thing to do) I still found that discovering that the song contains 'everybody gets to play' interesting and got me thinking again about meaning. (Probably just my own personal meaning in reality)
Like the words origionaly got the mind thinking about the words again. 'Games Without Frontiers' conjured play conjured up up in my mind, Territory, boundaries or lack of. Wheras Everybody Gets To Play conjured up people or leaders and their behaviour.
rightfully there is interest in the meaning of the song
for many of us discovering that the song sings 'Jeux Sans Frontiers' not 'She's So Popular' was a revelation and put a new light on our curiosity as to the songs meaning.
Being aware of this now through people pointing it out is welcome, and changed my interpretations and suprised me greatly (admitedly attempts to interpret meaning in a song like this or songs in general can be wide of the mark or a futile thing
@1fgeofrey "Games without frontiers" and "Everybody gets to play" means pretty much the same thing, This is the music of my growing years. Interpretation of songs will always be personal, and changes with the generations. As such we are both right and wrong.
But 'Jeux' means 'games', 'sans' means 'without' and 'frontiers' means 'frontiers' (lol that's the same) so it does mean 'Games without frontiers'..... doesn't it? At least, that's what I learned...
really really great... it's a good thing that he didn't change style... no offense with genesis after his departure, they were still awesome.. but genesis with peter gabriel was better...
This video is the original version I have watched the very first time...("Plays The Video" DVD is slightly changed). But lyrics is not the original version?
@PSBGeorge this is the original version i had original released on beta in 1981 or 82. if the video lyrics differ from the original album lyrics then it was all changed by Peter Gabriel himself. as to my knowledge botht the video and the album version are the same.
@h8ste25 At 2:30 says, "Whistling tunes we kiss on baboons in the jungle"(I think that lyrics are the same as 1st verse). But the same part of "another" version says, "Whistling tunes we piss on the goon in the jungle". Please let me know what is the "another" version... Album, demo, unsensored,...or something(if it was exised)??
@PSBGeorge The original lyric is "We piss on the GOONS in the jungle" which is a reference to the Vietnam war. The definition of the word "Goon" is [A thug hired to intimidate or harm opponents]
This song is a masterpiece by Peter and proves how much he had progressed musically since his days with Genesis. He was too brilliant to keep doing the same old prog. rock.
its amazing music videos were so much better back in 80s, 70s, video directors knew how to encompass the song with images and camera placement with a pretty small budget, there is much more creativity when you do not have a whole whack of money to work with
Hans plays with Lotte, Lotte plays with Jane Jane plays with Willi, Willi is happy again Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Britt Adolf built a bonfire, Enrico plays with it -Whistling tunes we hid in the dunes by the seaside -Whistling tunes we're kissing baboons in the jungle It's a knockout If looks could kill, they probably will In games without frontiers-war without tears Games without frontiers-war without tears
I love this song. I also loved it to the power of 10 when it came out. In addition to the other comments, I also 'see' a reference to Dunkirk *whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside' *representations of frail humans are interspersed amongst the sand among violent explosions* one of the more harrrowing and intense pieces of war folklore of the 20th century.
Just for the record, it's ''Jeux sans frontières'': that's the right spelling. And in Shock The Monkey, you can read on his paper sheet the French translation as well (with phonetic signs): ''Choquez le singe''. And he does speak French somewhat. Everytime he came over here, he spoke some French, even in interviews & even in his Genesis days.
Btw, for a long time, I also thought Kate B. sang ''she's so popular'', like every French speaking person...just goes to show!
Is this the real video that used to be aired? Cause i can only download something similar but the parts of the kids at the table are switched for a white screen with birds flying across it in patterns, then there's a big scene with cars and trains... WTF?
The lyrics to this song are the work of an absolute genius. Symbolism and hidden meanings are interlaced into his songs with the skill I have yet to discover in any other artist. A true inspiration and a wonderful human being. Rock on Peter!
It's actually funny to see what some people say when they don't understand what the song is about. Many get offended & I would guess that when it was released there would of been some that would have tried to stop it from happening.
Either way PG was a GREAT musician, far better than 70% of the ones of today!
He is singing "Jeux Sans Frontier," French for "Games Without Frontiers," which I believe was the French eqivalent for the Australian tv game show known as "It's a Knock Out," popular in the mid 80's.
Je Sans Frontiers...Games without Frontiers, this song is based on a tv gameshow....Its a Knockout in Australia. And Kate Bush sings the french in the background.
@DukeofColumbia It took me 25 years to figure out that ol' Petey was singing French. I always thought he said "She is so poop-de-ay!" What the hell is that supposed to mean?! Once I got the cd, I figured out what was up. Great tune.
@TheWolfe666 French is my primary language and I never understood what she was saying until I read the lyrics. It's said pretty weirdly I must say : Jeux sans frontière.
I personally love this video, but methinks the matured Mr Gabriel looks back on it and cringes. Hence, the new "improved" version on his video compilation DVD.
"jane plays with willy, willy is happy again" and "adolf builds a bonfire, and leo plays with it" little odd and suspisious lyrics dont you think?..........
Every time I hear this song it reminds me of a birthday party I had at around the same time this track was released. I invited all my class mates over even though most of them didn't like me it spread out all over even into the nearby wood they took my toy guns and played war hiding behind tree's and buildings a similar vibe to what this track is purveying, my parents had a hard time keeping it under control, all just a bunch of users. The next day at school I was still treated like an outsider.
@mrquackadoodlemoo: first verse refers to Hitler and Enrico Fermi: "Suki plays with Leo, Sacha plays with Brit; Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it." Hitler started World War II in Europe, while Fermi's nuclear reactor enabled the nuclear weapons which ended the war in Japan. Additionally, Sacha is a Russian nickname for Alexandr, while Brit refers to Great Britain which allied with Russia during WWII
@mrquackadoodlemoo Its to do with nationalism between countries and the 'games' they play meaning wars as a country and actually its adolf builds a bonfire and enrico plays with it, refering to enrico fermi.
@mrquackadoodlemoo "Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it" is a reference to Enrico Fermi, who helped develop nuclear weapons for Hitler during WWII.
@mrquackadoodlemoo Actually the lyrics are "Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it." The fire is the war Hitler started in Europe, and Enrico was an American physicist who help develop the atomic bomb and end WWII
Ha! Haven't seen this in about 25 yrs or so when I was little. Forgot about this song and video. Heard at the grocery store yesterday. Video to come on the old HBO video juke box early 80s. One of the first rap/rock songs out , lol. Just kidding. Peter Gabriel usually had good songs a cool videos. This one use to scare my little brother, with the baby dolls crawling, lol. Another hidden gem on youtube. Kate Bush singing too. Thanks to youtube.
There is a videotaped account of 9/11 NYC that is from one videographer, from one vantage point that is in real-time, and captures all but the first strike, an over two hour account.. with footage minutes before the North Tower was even struck. It was released after 9 years and is available on dvd. It is taped from one of the most iconic vanage points. It is the most inclusive account known to exist, and is positioning for a feature release in the coming months: 'Tuesday Morning in September'.
For the people who dosen't know what Kate Bush is singing at the beginning of the song and other times during the song. She said "JEUX SANS FRONTIÈRES" in english it means "GAMES WITHOUTS FRONTIERS". So how to said its "JEUX SANS FRONTIÈRES " (JEUH-SANH-FRON-TEE-AIR). If I can help you :)
"Jeux sans frontieres' was the European name for the UK's "It's a Knockout" TV program shown in the 70's & 80's where teams from all over Europe competed by "dressing up in costumes playing silly games" like relay races filling up a tank with coloured water while dressed as a cartoon cow. A bit like Total Wipeout meets Takeshi's Castle with overtones of a World War II rerun....
The lyrics at the beginning are "Jeux Sans Frontieres," which is French for "Games Without Frontiers."It is often misheard as "She's So Popular."
"Adolf builds a bonfire, Enrico plays with it."
This refers to World War II. Adolf, of course, is Hitler, he started it. Enrico is physicist Enrico Fermi, whose theories built The Bomb that finished it.
The title is from a 1970s game show , contestants dressed up costumes to compete for prizes. A version came out in England called "It's a knockout"
...but the good things hopefully will follow. There is always the possibility that one can win for losing....if you search for the bright side as well
"Whistling tunes we hide in the dunes by the seaside"; "Games without frontiers - war without tears"... (he probes in the dark with a flash light to find a table of youth dressed like adults feasting on large piles of ice cream while the bird is left untouched on a T.V. table broadcasting Madd looking Uncle Sam with six arms) War has come to: "Games without frontiers - war without tears" by a mass produced rubber baby army. War is a game to youth, like a sport.
or maybe people just got sick of listening to poetic bullshit that they could not relate to, People forget that music in the 20's and 30's was a lot like music today....About a bunch of nothing....just every day stuff.....This song here is all deep and poetic.

@DrXerify Hadn`t heard it in awhile myself; nice to see again. Two things: Is that Kate Bush I hear in there, like the rumor mill said, and, most importantly........what in God`s name is she sayin???
This is my fav video of his. I was sooo pissed when I bought this dvd and this version wasn't on it. But fuck it at least it's online. Thanx for posting this! Beautiful!

It is the voice of the awesome Kate Bush. she is singing: Jeux sans frontieres
If you listen carefully you can make out the words.
For more info see here: en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Games_Without_Frontiers_(song)

Hadn't heard this in years, forgot how creative Peter is.
DrXerify 1 year ago 2
@DrXerify Hadn`t heard it in awhile myself; nice to see again. Two things: Is that Kate Bush I hear in there, like the rumor mill said, and, most importantly........what in God`s name is she sayin???
estyle40 1 year ago
@estyle40 I always thought it was Peter Gabril's voice in a high pitch.
What he / she's saying? "She's so Funkier"? Probably not.
