@dltg3 More likely it would have derailed the train and caused a mess, but the webs all conveniently snapped just as the train was stopping anyway, and what webs didn't snap, he let go of when he went unconscious.
In other news: this is a superhero movie. If at any point the physics are a bit spotty, the rule of cool takes over.
I always thought this scene and the scene after were kind of like jesus on the cross. Just think about it? Even the way he's pinned to the train, taking all that weight and pain to save ordinary people, and they're there to carry him to safety after!
I was so excited for this movie but unlike a lot of you here, I felt this is where the problems for the 3rd movie started. The physics just don't add up when Ock throws Spider-Man into the air. Here, I just kept asking, why the hell would there be and end the track, in the middle of New York that is not a terminal?
What makes Spider-Man so awesome is because any other superhero would have just stopped the train using some superpower in one try without breaking a sweat. Spider-man had to try a few different ideas before he finally stopped the train, and he still struggled like hell. That made it more realistic because despite his super strength, he had his limit to how much he can handle.
@Therty001 Well technically yeah, but all they know is the face of some college-age kid that no one knows. Unless someone on that train knew Peter personally or they got his name from him, there isn't too much risk.
Tobey pulls off the scene very well..the agony and pain of trying to stop such strong force like a train. Plus I like the people's reaction, seeing what he did and realizing that Spidey is a hero, despite what the Daily Bugle says.
Raimi powered him down considerably. The comics have Spidey lifting several train carriages at once with relative ease. I think the reboot should make an effort to show that he is actually freakishly strong. I have met a lot of people whose only experience with Spider-man is from the movies, and they only thought his powers included the agility and speed of a spider, with only slightly heightened strength. Raimi at times had him down to Cap America level
At the end of the movie, you did see his strength though. When the fusion machine goes beserk, he keeps that whole building from collapsing on Mary Jane
@BJgrand You're actually right about that. Then my complaint will be that they were too inconsistent with his strength level. But yeah, that wall was freaking huge.
@lemmedasker I don't know if it was inconsistency as much as it was them not giving him too many opportunities to show his strength. Besides it's a movie. How interesting would it be if he stopped the train in 5 seconds? What made the scene so epic was the struggle and everything that led up to it that when it was finally done you were just like "Man that was epic!" That's the main reason why people don't connect with superman as much because everything is just too easy for him.
@lemmedasker It's not so much inconsistency as it was them not giving him too many opportunities to show his strength. Besides, it's a movie. How interesting would it be if he stopped the train in 5 seconds? The reason that this scene was so great was because of the struggle and everything that led up to it that when it was finally over you were just like "Man that was epic!"
I wish he didn't completely take his mask off, it should have burned a big hole in it or something. It would have been more epic if his bones started to dislocate or crack.
@HoneyIShrunkTheKids2 It would work for spiderman. Honestly dont try to compare supermans strength to anyone because hes frickin superman. of course it would work for him. This scene showed how strong spidey is/can be if needed to. Notice he passed out after? He gave everything to stop the train. Sure superman could have stopped it faster and no hate to him but any hero couldve stopped that train if they needed to. ;)
thinking about it it's kinda cool how they made spiderman try a few things before finally stopping the train, most superheroes would just go "i know what to do" and stop the train spidey is much more fallible than batman who always seems to be 2 moves ahead and not as strong as superman but his heart and quick wit allow him to rival even the most powerful of enemies and overcome monumental obstacles
@reighost Batman no. Superman could EASILY do it since he's stronger and isn't encumbered by that troublesome thing called gravity, but that's why Marvel heroes in general are more interesting than DC heroes: they're more real. Hell, most of the DC cast isn't even human, anyway.

funny face or not....it's very realistic...many other superheroes can just think and make the train slow to a stop or overpowered superstrength/ tactile telekinesis can do that Spider-man is one of the most human heroes to me that still have superpowers...others whom rely on body armor or genius technology just dont have the same feel to me.
It was a cheap excuse for Sam to get the mask off. It only sparked for a second. He could have easily put it back on, and would have. Spiderman is like Batman with his secret Identity, he is completely paranoid.
