  • @slowhand633 the root of mixolydian is the fifth of the scale. In this case it is Bb which is in the key of Eb. It would be good to play over a V or V7 chord. ( Bb or Bb7) this would give it that mixo sound.

  • Thanks Peter! This has givin me a great idea!

Hi I'm Dick Biggerstaff...Come watch my new Dick's Licks guitar video.

  • @handsupbud your name is ridiculous.

  • this is the first licks video i've followed to the end and actually played along AND learnt something out of doing so... nice. thank you

  • I love how people think they have to memorize cue cards like this to sound alright.. Can't he just naturally say "hope you enjoyed this come up with your own licks in mixolydian!" lol

  • haha..... fail

  • in reality all the modes are the same...the only thing that changes is the order of the notes...so basically doesn't make sense saying that you have to use a mixo in here: you use the major scale, and then it's up to you which licks to use...arpeggios are great, of course...I use them so much.

  • when is it best to use mixo ?

  • @slowhand633 Whenever you damn well please, that's when.

  • 4:56 que fue lo q dijo?

  • such a nice boy

  • haha. 5:00. I wasn't expecting that.

  • oh peter vogl ur so swesome

  • 4:56 is the best thing i've ever heard hahahahahaha

  • I was expecting some stronger lines to motivate learning the mixolydian scale. anyway a good effort.

  • Great Lesson! Unfortunetly You have a few Nobody's, That are only interested in negating anything they can. I doubt that they can even follow you, Because, They don't even know a Major from a minor.

  • habla menos y toca mas...si no pasa nada con tu video

  • lol its not even 1357

  • Vogl reminds me of that nerd guy on "Role Models'

  • "If I Needed Someone" by the Beatles is in A mixolydian.

  • great lesson :)

  • Sad times. A nice guy who has forgotten more about guitar than you pricks will ever know gives his time and knowledge for nothing and gets ?

Thanks for the lesson some people do appreciate it, mostly the ones who dont usually post.

  • I agree with you dude. I don't know why someone thumbs downed you. I think they're in a bad mood. haha.

  • i love his face when he says lick number trece

  • lol ur such a square, but thanks for the lesson

  • You sound like you're talking to kindergarteners.

  • HA HA - you are so right. He does sound like he teaching a 5 year old. But his lesson is great. Very jazzy licks. But your comment cracked up.

  • He is. Hey did you guys get your milk and cookies yet? I didn't.

  • great vid actually.. I see some naysayers.. but I have to disagree. .even knowing the rhythm wasn't jazz.. I liked the little riffs he came up with...

  • i think the 1st and 2nd one are more usefull in a ballad than the type of jazz comping he used.

all i think was really usefull for licks is the slide from b3 to 3 that ends on the tonic

  • my mates got a lovely blue blade strat, nicer than my american strat by a mile

  • Ok, lick 2 is an EbMaj7 arpegio

  • Bb Mixolydian mode is from EbMaj7

  • Lick this.

  • @cuerpoeperra thats right !!!!

  • remember...I have no idea what i'm saying!

  • one more time, good luck!

  • hey, where can i get that "let's jam" cd?

  • look on his website

  • What model of the guitar?

  • stratocaster

  • Think is a blade

  • its a strat with custom pickups. nothing special.

  • Thanks Pete........I was SOOOOO boredd with what I knew......Opened some new doors for me thanks again!!!!!!!!!!

  • A PLEASURE HAVING YOU as A TEACHER PETER !

  • This was a proper lesson. Peter, you have a great teaching approach. Just today I got so frustrated with all these geetar heroz showing off their skills and calling it a "lesson". I'm not a beginner, I know the scales/modes, but your example showed me how good a simple lick can sound in the right context.

  • Thank you so much Peter. I bought your excellent Blues and Jazz jam CD and I'm enjoying all the lessons on Youtube. You and your team are to be congratulated on an excellent teaching method of jazz guitar. Do you have any lessons on how to improve picking technique to achieve that double time funky bebop lines ala Benson and Martino etc? Thank you.

  • funkiest backing track ever

  • The Simpsons comes to mind!

  • fuck thats a nice funy backing track

  • i didnt understand the bit about why the Eb major scale is the same notes as Bb mixolydian??

  • Think in terms of the key of C. C Ionian (C Major) has the exact same notes as G mixolydian. So transpose C Ionian to Eb Ionian, and the relative mixolydian scale is therefore Bb mixolydian.

  • its because they are the same scale if you are thinking in terms of what notes they contain but mixolydian starts on the 5th degree of the major scale making it sound as if bb was the root sort of. it really means nothing unless you can hear it so play your modes and see if you can hear that mixolydian sounds dominant or your dorian mode sounds minor for example

  • some of his strings are out of tune

  • this was really well done. He gave you the scales, then gave you the licks, then put it to music. nice.

  • he's cut his hair hahahhahahaha

  • Wow I had no idea how to do those licks, this vid helped to continue to not know how the hell to play those.

  • Are you retarded...?

Just watch his fingers...Not that hard...

  • it's fucking true hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Hahahahahaha! And remember: I have no idea what I'm saying... Hahahha, awesome!

  • can anyone recomend some jazz/funk songs that uses the mixolydian mode?

  • "The Chicken," arranged by Alfred James Ellis.

Doesn't get more funky than that.

Starts out with a good swing intro, then after a bit breaks into some heavy duty funk. The chords are easy as Hell to memorize, there's only like 5 in the song if I recall correctly, almost all of which are dominant 7th chords [mixolydian]

  • what guitar is that?

  • hey! waht guitar is that?

  • I love his guitar, so classy yet metalish

  • Its a strat...

  • Yeah, but not one you can get in the store. I havent seen a jet black strat with floyd rose and ebony fretboard. Have you seen? Are there for sale? If you know all these please answer me! Im an Idiot, i did not know it was a strat, yet I own one!

  • Actually, I have seen two (cream and black). It was at the Hard Rock Cafe in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was signed by Richie Sambora.

  • Yeah good luck trying to own one

  • good

  • STOP SMILLING LIKE THAT OR I WILL KILL MYSELF

    thx for the licks...

  • haha

  • maybe he is a marionette

  • great lesson

  • Every video without fail "Ahead of taaame" lol

    love this guy

  • It's great...but...um...that guy could benefit from talking more like a human and less like a computer...lol

  • i think he could benifit from just being less yank =P

  • lol.

  • the bg jam track is the main thing man ...

  • i love that guitar!

  • Thank you for sharing your expertise.

  • this guy looks like grandmas favourite grandson;-)

  • hahahahaha!! so true!! What a goofy guy!

  • lmao guitarjoe nice 1

  • exactly dude!

  • @guitarjoe12345 haha dude i read ur comment 1st then looked at the vid n cracked up laughing hahaaha!!

  • @guitarjoe12345 Yes. He's first on the woolly jumper list at christmas

  • Not great example of mixolidian licks , bad phrasing , this is anything but Jazz.

  • nice chops simple but speaks

  • haha love the out take wasnt expecting that!

  • The scale is R 2 3 4 5 6 b7. Just listen to good jazz players 99% of them will use this scale, especially over dominant chords like 7 9 13 chords. Dominant scale for dominant chords. Remember if you learn licks in one of the scale positions, make sure you can play them in all the other scale positions so you can use it all over the neck

  • you added a b3 to mixo scale (or b7 to maj scale). is there some theory behind the added note?

btw, the tab from the link is incorrect on the last lick.

  • There is not minor 3rd in any Mixolydian scale. Just a b7th.

  • in the third lick, he slides from minor 3rd to major 3rd for the last 2 notes.

  • sliding from a minor 3rd to a major 3rd is common for blues and jazz.

Its part of the major blues scale, in C it would be: C D Eb E G A C

Its good for major 7 or dominant 7th chords in blues and jazz due to the fact that there is no 7th, making it more versatile than using a mixolydian or just a major scale.

Its a good building block for improvisation, i think.

And I've found you can always add the corresponding 7th into the scale if you like.

  • What do you mean there's no 7th?

  • C D Eb E G A C

    1 2 b3 3 5 6 octave

Its the major blues scale i was talking about, and theres no 7th in that.

  • lol, do you know how to count?

  • Dude ya got two 3's

  • Its the most BASIC of music theory there.

    Eb E

    b3 3

E flat is the flat 3rd of that pitch collection. And the symbol for a flatted note is "b" and since they're both some type of "E" note, that means they're some type of 3rd. Minor or major, they're both 3's in that collection of pitches. Just to clarify.

  • Isn't that just the major pentatonic scale with the diminished submediant added?

  • major diatonic

  • By the way I didn't know about the out take in this video until today. Jeremy you got some splaining to do..........

  • Hey, I am happy.......I play guitar for a living. What's to be sad about. Not very angry either. Anyone watching this video at 4 in the morning must be a musician. Hope all is well in your world.-Peter

  • "Anyone watching this video at 4 in the morning must be a musician" .. amen dude

  • muy bueno

  • is it me or am I correct hat your first Bb scale on the 6th fret had a 1 2 3 4 5 6 7b 8 and when you shifted to the Eb scale on the 11th fret it was 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 the difference of a minor and major 7th.

    Whats the deal?

  • Bb is the 5th of Eb and so it is dominant. The difference between a dominant mixolydian scale and a major scale is the b7 so when you go to the Eb major scale the only difference is a natural 7th

  • actually there is no difference. it's all the same notes. You're just starting at a different note.

  • hes so happy

  • It could be because it's 4 in the morning, but I laughed really hard when I read this comment.

  • Peter,

I love you calm style of teaching and your theory. I have really enjoyed your lessons. They add a new light on different techniques. Thanks so much!

    Dominic McManus

  • nice chit

  • I need this in battle

  • Peter Vogl Rocks.

I love all the lessons on his site.

I bought four so far, and they are very helpful.

They are only $4.99 to download (most of them). Well worth it for a 20 minute video lesson that EXPLAINS what is going on. The lessons arent just licks.
