Even though this film is approaching 60 years, as far as films that have captured my heart go, it has still yet to be topped. Among the many things going for it, it has an awesome score as heard on this video.
*Hey everyone! I'm a composer from Pittsburgh interested in film scoring. Please check out my music and let me know what you think! I'd super appreciate it!*
man why would u show the whole opening credits, should have just started at the part when the horse riders show up at the top of the hill. i just clicked through the credits. who really gives a fuck who the costume designer was, and everythigh else for that matter?
that guy which played that quite and polite samurai... that was a masterpiece of playing a samurai... the music at the beginning remembers me of him - sitting in the grass, playing with the flowers, then killing two bad guys ;-)
I've seen every film by Kurosawa made between 1945 and 1993. This is indeed his Magnum Opus. So many innovative and interesting film techniques, yes. But his deliberate pace in character and plot development -- wonderful. Epic. Some complain of its pace and length. I would simply respond by saying: yes, that length, that glorius length.
It's funny, I had this in my head yesterday and it took me HOURS to figure out which movie it was even from. So glad I finally remembered, would have driven me crazy :) Thanks for posting this!
You are a true leg for posting this music. I couldnt seat through 7 samurai til i was 18 and about to go to uni to study film. One night i couldnt sleep and decided to put it as it never failed to sedate me. I was glued to the screen. When the film finished I rewinded it and watched it again. I was too absort on the images and hadnt been reading any of the subtitles.
Toshiro Mifune was an EPIC force unto himself, this film acts as a catalyst to help him realize his ULTIMATE potential as an actor. Through the films extended length, over three hours uncut, you get to really know each and every samurai and their stories. There are only a few movies I've seen that have musical intermissions; King Kong (original), 2001 and The Seven Samurai. All are epic and all have amazing soundtracks worthy of a musical interlude. Thanks for this post!
most people do not understand Bushido; it isn't about being a macho man going around banging your chest like a gorilla, it is about having a cast iron work ethic, about doing a good job, even if it means dying. Bushido has limitless applications where working are concerned, people get it confused with Budo. Bushido, is about work, Budo, is about martial arts. You can have Bushido without Budo, but you can not have Budo without Bushido.
My mom showed me the this movie when I was going through a depressed time in my life. BEST GESTURE EVER. It made me get into samurai movies, but this is still the best one! I just wish it was longer :P
@filmgeek22 About as much of a masterpiece as you'll ever see. But view it open minded. It helps if you know what you're getting into because some don't find Kurosawa's style entertaining. But Seven Samurai is very enertaining.
@filmgeek22 its good to know a brief history of the period the film is made too, it can be lost on dsome cause they dont know what its going to be about (apart from samurai obviously)
That's very funny, 'cause I have a copy of "Stray Dog" that I haven't watched yet. Seriously, though... the 7 Samurai may very well become your favorite film of all time. I think that I may have watched it more than 50 times. Not sick of it yet, either.
The music starting at 1:40 has been on my mind since I first saw this movie, it plays throughout the movie in different pitches depending on where it's played. I would like to know what it is actually called please.
For those of you complaining about how this movie had "no hot women;" Akira Kurosawa was directing a movie about the poorest Japanese of the feudal era. The movie wasn't meant to be a fairy tale fantasy, it was meant to be grity and "real," hence, the women weren't supposed to be "hot." Even today the movie stands out; most Samurai flicks are idealized, romanticized versions of the history.
The British are a breed apart from the rest of the world. They are brave like no one else, they keep their cool even at the worst moments. No wonder they had a huge Empire that even now recognize the Queen as their rightful head of state. Canada, new Zealand South Africa, Australia, Bahamas, Jamaica, etc, etc.
Sorry, I may have misspoke. I think they might have been used to some extent in the opening of Conan, but mostly in the scene where Conan, Valeria & Subotai are sneaking into Thulsa Doom's cavern.
I loved this movie; can't track it down anywhere on the net though, that has subtitles. This movie is excellent; screw "The Magnifiscent Seven" this movie is far more harrowing, even heart wrenching in moments.
You would have gotten along with my grandfather, lol.. I remember my mother rushing to cover my ears when he would get annoyed.. he was an old WW2 Sailor himself.
The more a people fight each other, the more they need to engage in negotiation talks, the more they do that, the more impecable and complex their etiquette systems become. By far the most complex etiquette system ever, was Victorian Era Britain's.
Like I said; the more warlike a people, the better their manners are.
Thank U, i consider this Music n soundtrack in this movie to among my all time best. It is so nuanced n relative to the emotions n rhythm in the story
Oh I've been looking for this soundtrack in years! Where did you buy it, or whatever you did to get it? I guess I'll be visiting this video quite often; one of the best scores in film history, I would dare to say.
Akira Kurosawa's Samurai movies are true art work. We will never see movies as great as his works.

I just keep on coming back to this video... honestly, this is probably the best movie I've watched next to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
People say that this movie was too long and slow paced, but it wasn't like that for me. I never wanted it to end.

Intense, dramatic even funny.
A really masterpiece of a kind.
For me the best part is that it is in black and white.
Light and darkness, as simple as life itself.
You'll enjoy it, that's for sure.

also, Nippontastic, you think I'm bad?
Musashi was much worse buddy. Did Musashi swear a lot?
Like a sailor; no joke, he was described as "worse than the peasantry" and "vulgar."
I'm a gentleman compared to Musashi; Musashi did not practice good manners until his 40's.

Actually, most Arabs are impecably polite, at least the upper classes.
Good manners are an integral part of Arab culture, and I restate my point, the more warlike a people's past, the better their manners are.

never trust someone with overly good manners.
