no what I meant is the race itself. its just simple racing. unlike newer mario kart games like mkwii where you do stunts, drift, get those powerful items or get hit by them. mario kart 64 is much more "peaceful" then the always chaotic mkwii
Well, in the solo (not grand prix) race mode and the multiplayer mode, you can set on and of the items or you can choose which type of items you don't want to use.
@ohohothisrocks what are these "retardedly stupid powerful items" you speak of? The items have, more or less, been the exact same since MK64. The modified the blue shell to explode, but now it can't harm other racers in front of you (unless caught in the blast), the bomb-ombs are easy to dodge, and the bloopers are easy to deal with.

@Lucky29x uh-huh and your replying to a comment that's two years old. Have you played MK wii? it doesn't matter if your first because of skill. One blue shell comes and your dead. How about a few million red shells on your back? Mario kart back in the days need real skill to win
@ohohothisrocks Two words; THANK YOU! The biggest issues I have with the modern Mario Karts (except DS because I played that alone always), was that the new ones rely too much on item luck. Even if you know how to slow down to avoid a blue shell, it still doesn't stop Triple red shells or that lucky guy who got a 5th place Star from destroying you. Those item chains NEVER happened with computers before. Plus the new games have too much character Bias (Miis).

Nothing feels worse than getting a single green shell in 5th place after being blue shelled, but the guy who's in 4h gets triple reds, pretty much walling you. OR when you're at the end of a race and someone gets a last minute blue shell. They need to fix the item rates back to double dash, or weaken the items like Mario Kart 64.
