Yeah... Rebellious popular characters are the best plot devices ever. And yes, shame indeed. The movie was pretty disappointing character-wise, same goes for the plot and- actually, the movie wasn't all that good. But they really did a good job on the drawing.

bitingneko: You are right on that. They are a bit like fanfiction sense the popular consesus amongst the fans is that the movies are not canon as they do not affect the events in the main storyline (canon).

However, like fanfiction, a non-canon story based on a certain fandom should nonetheless follow the original fandom's canon. If it doesn't it becomes original story and if you go along that path you might as well make it original. Making a canon character OOC just so you can have an excuse for a plot is unacceptable in any form, in my opinion.
