  • Whatever became of him?

  • haha i thought he was gonna hug her i never shake hands with my mom

  • He's handsome. :)

  • PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i cant stand it when assholes bring up politics in these videos

  • That smile she has at 1:24 I think she knows it's her son

  • peter was adorable at that age

  • to calihart and tube portal- take your silly religious crap elsewhere. This is no forum for your fictious beleifs.

  • @wiguy3 One of these days, you'll wish you'd believed in this "silly religious crap" to use your words...NOT mine...and the "fictitious" beliefs as you call them. Oh, well...consider yourself warned.

  • Wow he was hot!

  • This is one of the finniest video that I've had seen. I love the expression on Miss Francis face when she saw that it was her son

  • @1summero Yeah... she SCREAMED and then put her hand over her mouth. PRICELESS!

  • Arlene Francis was the shit! I adore her.

  • thats great, lol!!

  • This show was great, I watched it as a child and its still great. How many of todays shows could compare? Not many if any. I pity the future in television.

  • @GKGOOKINS i pity the future of TV too. I predict it will be very bad, worse than it is today. Too bad Peter has joined the liberal ranks and is very unclassy.

  • @calihartley2010 I don't intend this to be mean or nasty - What makes liberals unclassy when it is conservatives that justify corporate abuse as "nothing personal, it's just business" and seek to eliminate social programs when corporations receive more welfare than anybody?

  • @calihartley2010 Do you really believe that gay people are evil and don't deserve the same human rights as you? It's ironic you say that in a comment to this video because Peter Gabel is gay. As for social programs making people lazy that is a well-worn myth. Yes, there are always people that take advantage of any system, but the vast majority who use those programs are elderly, disabled, veterans and the poor. If we don't take care of them then we become an immoral and ungodly society.

  • @TheTubePortal I do not believe that gay people are evil. Their lifestyle is evil. Peter Gable is not gay because he has a son from a relationship. Well if you see since the civil rights act of 1964, the minorities have misused the system in a bad way. The liberal hippies support they abuses all in the name of human rights. Look at London and you will see how it is crumbling. Look at cities with large black populations and see how bad it is. So do not tell me that these lazy scums need benefits

  • @calihartley2010 I truly feel sorry for you. You clearly have no sense of moral responsibility or social conscience and are self-centered. Everyone has a responsibility to love their fellowman and help them when they are hurting, sick or in need. Again, I'm NOT talking about those who take advantage - but gov't statistics show less than 15% do this. You believe in God, so please read these verses and hopefully it will help you see your error: Deuteronomy 15:7-11 Proverbs 14:31 James 2:2-13

  • @TheTubePortal I bet you must be one of those social justice Christians who believe that the sole worth of the church is to be a socail justice organization. I do love my fellow man, but accepting a sinful lifestyle is not being a good Christian and does not help the sinner either. I do help people who are genuinely sick or are in need, and not bums who sponge off the system. So you maybe young and silly but you need to also use your brains rather than your bleeding heart. Please use both.

  • @calihartley2010 You've lost your soul, my friend. Am I my brother's keeper? Yes, I am and you are. God will hold all accountable for whether or not we loved others or were stingy and selfish making excuses to not help them. Very few "sponge off the system", the vast majority don't so your excuse is moot. Calling someone names or giving labels doesn't change reality. Believing in God requires doing what he says. Help your fellowman without limits or criticism and leave the judging to God.

  • @TheTubePortal Well I have my soul. You have yours but it is not in the right place. It is good to judge and distinguish what is good and bad and who deserves help and who does not. So grow up a bit and understand what I am saying. Also, Jesus did whip people when he saw them abusing the Temple. He did not say oh poor people are only trying to make money. So please save your sympathy for those that deserve it.

  • @calihartley2010 Wow!!! Your misinterpretation of scripture and callous attitude are evident to everyone. To say that Jesus running out the money changers (the rich taxing the poor to make profit off of that which is holy) is the same as running off the poor as unworthy of help is truly the most disgusting thing you could have said. You lack compassion, are self-centered, and selfish. You really need some serious soul searching, but it is clear you won't listen to me so I'm done with you.

  • @calihartley2010 Who said I "support the gay lifestyle"? And what does my taste in music have to do with anything? I enjoy everything from Shostakovitch to Lady Gaga. Your notion that the poor sponge off the rich is positively frightening. You say you are only against those that are lazy bums, and that's fine, but such are in the extreme minority not the majority. It's often argued by conservatives that people on welfare are lazy black people with 10 kids, but that's a gross misrepresentation.

  • @calihartley2010 You claim to love others then tell someone to go commit suicide? You claim to love others and call someone a pea brain? You are a dangerous person and I'm reporting your statement to YouTube, and if I can go further and press charges I will do so. You DO NOT make threats to other people that tell them to kill themselves. That's cyberbullying. You're lucky I'm not a minor anymore because you would be in even worse trouble. Anonymity is not protected when you break the law.

  • Pure surprise at 4:48 - you don't see that decency on TV these days :(

  • I agree...best episode! Notice how John asked Peter, as he was leaving, to give his regards to his father? This show had so much class and value.

  • @lttguys im gay too :D high five ahaha

  • he has his mother's nose

  • That look on Arlene's face when she finds out its Peter is priceless! She seemed proud that her son could beat her at her own game.

  • He was a cute young man and it's so sweet how he kissed his mother as he exited. Really, Arlene was so charming, what a great mother she must have been!

  • What 17-year-old today would be as poised, polite, and articulate as Peter Gabel was back then? Kids in the 40s, 50s, and 60s were brought up to learn respect and all the social graces. Too bad this guy turned out to be such an extremist a-hole. I'm sure Arlene is rolling over in her grave.

  • @stickstr8up What are his politics? Is he a leftist, because if he is, then I agree that Miss Francis would be rolling over in her grave. She sure was a pretty woman and he was cute too. By the way, it's hard to believe that the highest total of prize money in the mid-60's is only $50. You can't even buy a full tank of gas today with the sky high prices at the pumps. Hey Obama, Drill Baby, Drill, you a-hole.

  • @stickstr8up please don't believe that it is not possible in this day and age, though. if the remaining expectations for today's youth are lowered even further, what in the world will we teenagers have to measure up to?

and it is rather unreasonable and negative to think that there aren't any seventeen-year-olds today who are similar to Peter Gabel.

    have a little faith....

  • @walawalawombat My statement came from an authoritative perspective: I work at a high school and I can assure you that there are no teenagers who are as respectful and graceful as kids were back then. What you call my negativity, I simply call sad reality.

  • @stickstr8up i completely agree that we teenagers are, for the most part, a sorry lot, but my only objection was that your assertion was all-inclusive. you weren't, and you still aren't, allowing that there are, however few, teenagers like Peter Gabel.

    that was my only point.

also, assuming you are an American school teacher, American children aren't the standard for anything today; in other cultures and nations around the world, i'd bet there are respectful teenagers.

    consider it, please.

  • Interesting - I ask some questions whose implied answers you don't like; so I must be "emotional." Thanks for your response - you told me all I needed to know

  • "Democracy is useful when you use it well, not abuse it." What is that supposed to mean? Conservatives use democracy, liberals abuse it? That sounds like, "You should be happy you live in a country that has freedom of speech, so just shut up!"

  • @dafrieze wow i wish you replied to me instead of just typing away. I accidently saw this. Now listen here, democracy is a good thing, but it can be bad when the freedoms are abused by whoever it maybe, democrat or republican. I wasn't trying to pinpoint any party in particular, but you said it and right now it is the libs that are abusing it. So think about what i said and not be emotional like a liberal nutcase. Democracy gives rights and priveledges and those should be treated with respect.

  • Thankfully he looks like his mother.

  • Nice to see the son of this gorgeous woman, he is handsome !

  • At about 1:23 anyone else notice a small smile on Arlene's face? Could it be possible she knew already? I remember someone saying when Martin appeared in the 70s version she knew his voice immediately. I know her reaction says she didn't know but she was an actress. I don't know. It's just I notice a small smile, almost a knowing smirk. Just wondering. :)

  • It must have great fun to completely bamboozle your Mother on live TV. Must have been daunting as well since at around 3:00 + it looks as if he needs and does a relaxation breath.

  • Arlene Says "Since when did you want to be fair?" to John Daly! (at 2:56)At 5:09 Peter says," I knew it would require the utmost deception to deceive you Mother."

  • Arlene Says "Since when did you want to be fair?" to John Daly!

  • @IEnjoyHippies 2011

  • There was some nepotism going on here. Arlene Francis was on the Board of the New York World's Fair.

  • This would have been 1964 or 1965, the two years the New York World's Fair was held.

  • @expoboy52 Autumn 1964 in fact.

  • People were so polite and genteel back then on TV. Funny without being foolish. We've lost a lot over the years. I guess I just need to stick with PBS.

  • @markmh835 couldn't have said it better

  • It's strange to be with your mother on tv like that !

  • Arlene Francis est une très belle femme !

  • what does Peter do now?

  • @henrygrove100 He is a law professor.

  • @americanidol510 Can you get a message to him?

  • @henrygrove100 No, I don't know him personally. He is also the editor of Tikkun Magazine so perhaps they have contact information on thier website.

  • Very handsome!!=)

Anyone reminded of actor Kelly Blatz when they look at Peter?

  • ( 5:00 ) note that the camera lingers on Arlene. The director probably hoped she would have a funny revelation moment, like she had with George Burns or that night that Martin came as a mystery guest. (both available on YouTubia)

Arlene served as a member of the Fair's Board of Directors.

Singer band leader Rudy Vallee had a career revival in the 1960s. His questions tended to be of the left field variety for the rest of the broadcast, but only he identified part of this occupation.

  • Thank you for posting this landmark.

This was the first of two times that Peter Gabel appeared on WML. He also appeared in a 1967 episode (also in YouTubia) with Bennett Cerf's son (prefigured at 5:45 ) when they edited a Harvard U magazine together.

This is 1964, a period when WML liked to find all kinds of interesting occupations associated with the New York Worlds Fair. It also liked to find boys employed in interesting occupations. Peter was aged 17.

  • Now he's a large, long-haired, hippie looking law professor

  • Now he's a large, long-haired, hippie-looking law professor

  • Am I the only one who thinks he looked very much like Prince William does now?

  • Why is this even an issue? Go to your local library, get ahold of Arlene's book, and actually read it. There are plenty of photos in there - young Peter Gabel looks very much like young Martin Gabel, and it's unmistakable. Also, medical technology then wasn't what it is now, and a pregnancy was rarely confirmed by a doctor until a woman was a few months along. Arlene very directly stated that she married Martin before there was any clue of her being pregnant, "in that order." End of story.

  • How much do I love Arlene Francis.

  • Arlene Francis & Martin Gabel were married on May 14, 1946 and Peter Gabel was born on January 28, 1947. Do the math, folks. Either she got pregnant very fast and Peter was somewhat premature, or -- ... Let's see, Martin Gabel was about 5'3" and Peter Gabel was over 6' tall. Arlene & Martin never had any other children. ... I have these facts, but no conclusion. ... Peter today is so far on the left, he's fallen over the edge. He also looks as if he's stuck in 1969 forever.

  • @spelvin214 never thought about that but yeah, Peter doesn't look a thing like Martin does he lol

  • @spelvin214 He is Martin Gabel's son. there is a strong facial resemblance

  • @Indygoguy I'm not kidding when I say I don't see it at all, and I'm usually pretty good at these things. .... One problem I have is someone, many years ago, told me he knew Arlene Francis around the time she married Martin Gabel, and that she -- well, let's say she enjoyed sex. I shouldn't even say this, but, hell, you know the Internet. Take it for what it is, which is nothing.

  • @spelvin214 I'm not kidding either. I see a quite strong resemblance. I am a portrait artist for a living and am extremely adept at getting a likeness very quickly. After decades of working with other artists I know I have an ability that none of them have. I see it right away.Look at 0:38 then look at a picture of Martin Gabel from the IMDB page that looks like it was taken when he was in his late forties. There is no doubt about it. He is Martins son.

  • @spelvin214 One can look at recent pictures of Peter Gabel and he looks very much like his father only with long hair. If you do not know what to look for you may not see the likeness between the young Peter and the old Martin but when one compares the old Peter with the Old Martin they look like brothers if not the same person with different hair.

  • @spelvin214 So you don't see it, I do. I also see that you enjoy spreading gossip and for that reason maybe you don't want to see it. I know hat I'm talking about and he is Gabel's son. Get a DNA test to back up your claims if you want to build your ego up by spreading dirt. I think you r just one of those that tries to slander anything that is decent, and she was a graceful and pleasant lady who had a dignity and carried herself in a way that we don't see anymore.

  • @Indygoguy Listen, I love Arlene Francis. I wish people still behaved the way she did. Even the very words that describe her have gone out of style, words like "class" and "charm." ... That's exactly the point! I was shocked when I saw she had to have been pregnant when she married Martin Gabel, unless Peter were VERY premature! ... What you're doing to me is the old thing about "killing the messenger."

  • @spelvin214 The "message" is sheer gossip. It is not like you are delivering valuable information that is necessary to win a campaign, you are delivering cheap, sordid gossip. Yes, the child was born in less than nine months from the date of the wedding, that does not mean he is not Gabel's son. The resemblance is too strong to be by chance. It is one thing to say she slept with her fiance, it is another thing to say she slept around.

  • @spelvin214 and since it was physically IMPOSSIBLE for people in the 1940s to have sex before they were married... >_>

  • I agree he was a very handsome guy!

  • He was hot!! Love this ep!!XXX

  • He was a cutie.

  • @DamnStraightM35A2 It's a shame don't know what you're talking about.

  • @DamnStraightM35A2 coming from a ass hole

  • Arlene Francis served on the New York World's Fair Board of Directors.

  • Peter later became a respected law professor and is today a long-haired leftist hippie law academic and editor! Love it! xD

  • Love it when Arlene is so good at guessing everybody..she fails at this one! What a delight.. thx for putting this one on! What a handsome young guy c/o of a lovely lady.

  • All the great ones appeared on this show... Bet the sponsors that didn't sponsor wish they had! Take a look at all those great AMERICAN companies that did. Eat your heart out China!

  • Wow -- Peter is even more adorable than his mother --- if such a thing is even possible! Peter was a good son and moved his mother out to California to take care of her when she unfortunately become stricken with Alzheimer's back in the 1990s.

  • Hard to believe Arlene Francis is 57 years old in this clip. She looked very good for her age...

  • Peter and his mom share one face!

  • What a wonderful, fantastic program episode this is! Thanks, very much. I'm still steamed that the Game Show Network stopped showing these at 3 am (as if we need the garbage they replaced it with; as if there's some BIG ad target demo at that time).

  • a handsome lad....very

  • I wish I could back in time to when people still had class like this. I don't think there is class anymore in our world.

  • @melville80 I agree with you. I think one of the main reasons I watch these videos is to see the class, even the spoken word is eloquent.

  • Why did he say Mister X?!!! That just ruined it saying that he was a guy when the panel should figure that out....oh silly

  • Driving me crazy. Ther'e's a term specifically describing Martin Gabel's style of "singing" in a play. That is where a performer SPEAKS lyrics versus singing melodically. Term was mentioned on a "Whats My Line" episode. Thanks in advance.

BTW, was a kid when this show first aired. Just so enamored in the genteel manner of this show as set by Mr. Daly and the brilliance of the panelists. God Bless!

  • @gollytim "Parlando."

  • It sounded like 1 member of the audience knew who he was related to when his name appeared on the screen. 0:19

  • Whatever happened to Peter Gabel?

  • @MPL029 He did very well for himself. He earned a Ph.D. from Harvard and became a law professor, I believe he currently teaches at a university in California. If you search his name on Youtube a video lecture with him in it will appear. Though he has long grey hair now, his facial features are the spitting image of his father Martin.

  • I agree with all the really nice previous comments, and I 'd like to add: What a good-looking kid!

  • What a fortunate fellow Peter Gabel is ... to have been able to grow up in the privileged circumstances of class, and was obviously so loved and cherished by his parents. His charmed life is one to be "envied" by many of us -- although I begrudge him nothing.

  • OMG... that was great!

  • This is totally one of my favourite episodes!!! That was so good. =P

  • The thing that I draw from this, is that everybody cared about Peter and enjoyed his success. They loved him. We were better people then.

  • I loved these as a child and for some reason I always pretended

to be Arlene Francis when I played with my tape-recorder.I adored

her, so glamorous and classy. Now days we don't have this kind

    of class on TV.

  • Arlene is a true star! So pretty and classy!

  • The Gabels and Cerfs were neighbors and close friends. Bennet found then-relativley inexpensive country home in Mount Kisco, NY (Westchester County) and bought it as a "weekend" home (he and his wife had a Manhattan apartment). He mentioned it to Arlene and Martin, who later bought their own weekend home next to the Cerf's. Peter Gabel became close friends with Cerf's 2 sons when they were growing up.

  • This is my all time favorite episode of What's My Line - period! Arlene had no idea who it was until Peter was finally revealed to her at the end!! Look on Arlene's face when Peter is revealed is priceless!! Classic, classic old time TV. We love you Arlene and we miss you.

  • Peter Gabel was a cute young man!

  • @nerdflanders8710 Hey, what do you have against Jews?! I am a Christian and have been married to the most wonderful Jewish lady for many years. How dare you for saying such a thing?! Despicable!!!

  • @zildj1an hahah Im just messing with you , I dont mind Jews at all, because I'm not an american, wheres the famous Jewish sense of humor? guess Im copying South Park's example....

A jewish woman huh? does she scream at you in the shrill voice that is lampooned on tv.. I would think that a jew woman would be very demanding .

theres a joke whats the difference between a Jewish mother and a rottweiler? eventually the rottweiler lets go.

  • @nerdflanders8710 I am a Jewish woman and that is hilarious. My teeth are in fact quite sharp lol. Although I have been told my voice is seductive and in no way shrill...Fran is like my great aunt

  • @loveismydestruction lol. I have an Uncle EXACTLY like uncle Leo from Steinfeld.

he does all the same things , talks about events that happened 50 years ago and has a big chip on his shoulder.

I end up talking to him for hours.

  • @zildj1an I was shocked to hear that not long ago in the USA jews were not allowed to use swimming pools in the same way that blacks were persecuted. also there was a time when you werent allowed to vote if you were a Roman catholic.

land of the free my tukus.

    Land of the WASP.

  • lmao!! this is hysterical.

  • Rudy Vallee's first question: "Has your service had anything to do with ... *electronics*?" Whhhaaaat?

  • he was cute back in the day! :) as expected from Arlene's genes, lol

  • ha! arlene is so funny after she finds out who it is! "he doesn't get the $50, does he?"

  • Peter's a good looking kid.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY ARLENE FRANCIS ON YOUR 102th BIRTHDAY!!!!! you are missed

  • today is her birthday!?

  • yes it is oct 20 1907!!!!!!!

  • Best episode I've ever watched! Well, next to the ones with Esther Williams' and Debbie Reynolds' at least :P

  • arelens son is cute

  • The highest complement you can pay someone is to like them. I like everyone involved in "What's My LIne" and Peter is very lucky to have parents who obviously love him and are very proud of him.

  • I would love to see other clips from this episode to see if Arlene made any reference about Peter being backstage with them...and to see if she says anything to him in the good night segment. Are these clips on YouTube?

  • If only this new generation could behave like this young man getting ready to go off to college. I'm not surprised because both his parents were class personified. Look up erudite in the dictionary and there is Martin Gabel's photo. I'll bet they had a wonderful marriage and never ran out of things to talk about.

  • I can't get over Helen Mirren's uncanny resemblance to Arlene.

  • you're absolutely right! they do favor one another!

  • After Martin died, Peter took very good care of his mother. He moved her to San Fran and she lived there the last 10 years of her life. She is buried with Martin in a PA Jewish cemetery, but according to friends, Arlene always considered herself a Christian, but very rarely practiced her faith. It is still unknown if she was Eastern Orthodox or Roman Catholic. Her father was Armenian, but her mother, I believe, was Catholic.

  • If memory serves, Gil Fates in his book on What's My Line, titled appropriately enough What's My Line, identified her as Eastern ? / Greek? Orthodox.

  • Being part Armenian, if she wasn't Catholic, she would have been part of the Armenian Orthodox Church which follows the Julian Calendar like most Eastern Orthodox Churches.

  • Arlene Francis was beloved and missed. She was a Class act all by herself.

  • Fun!

  • Yes, such a transformation!!

  • you should see her sons hair now.

  • Such a great video. Lots of fun!!

  • Where Peter laughs and his mouth is wide open is the exact same expression when Arlene finds out who he is and her mouth is wide open like his...very identical..lol and it's funny how blank her face looks throughout the whole thing..lol

  • 'You do work, however?' LOL

  • Great video. Thanks for the posting.

  • I do love this video!

  • I do love it too. So much! What a funny and simple kid he was. Much of his tenderness came from his mother, and adorable woman! :)

  • I agree, I always loved Arlene Francis...I found her to be so quick-witted and very attractive and fun!

  • @DerAdventurer Too bad he is now a liberal left wing professor. Now he has long hair and lost his class being a hippy

  • @calihartley2010 indeed, I must agree with you. Peter became someone unrecognizable, not only on the appearance(which I give him a credit, since everyone is free to dress and looks as they want) and his leftist thoughts - which aren't good, although he's free to have them, thanks to Democracy.

  • @DerAdventurer yeah it is misuse of democracy. Democracy is useful when you use it well, not abuse it. But he did take care of his mother when she was ill and for that I will admire him.

  • @calihartley2010 you're right. She had a descent elderness supported by him.

  • @DerAdventurer you mean a nurse hired by him?

  • @calihartley2010 No. I meant the financial support given by him. I once read it on People's magazine.

  • @DerAdventurer yeah, being a university professor, they make a lot of money. So he could afford it too. Even she made a lot when she was on this show. Very talented lady.

  • 4:58 - Do you notice that Rudy Vallee looks at Arlene and asks 'Do you know him?' and she says, 'My Son!'. You can't hear them over the laughter and applauds.

  • Was Arlene Francis Jewish? I know her father wasn't Jewish but I suspect her mother was Jewish. Peter Gabel edits some magazine called "Tikkun" - Jewish.
