Phil Spector a wonderful producer in the 60 s. Be my baby are one of the best songs ever. But for me Spector never produced an album like Pet Sounds like B, Wilson did! Wilson always talks with respect when he talks about Spectors work.
Politics and greed...its music! You can hear it on the radio. What happened to the day when artists were starvign and did it because they loved it and had a message? I hope the Internet has changed all of this.
Spector records are so much superior to any of Brian Wilson records it's not even funny! Brian Wilson also claimed at one point that the title PET SOUNDS was "a tribute" to Phil Spector by naming the album using his initials, the guy is obsessed with Spec!
Love "good vibrations" though, edit or not edit, it doesn't matter.
I don't disagree with Spector that "Be My Baby" MADE the title sequence for Mean Streets but his dissing of Brian Wilson however sounds like the rantings of a sad-sac jealous of another's genius. Yes Brian Wilson talks a lot about the haunting quality of "Be My Baby" Needless to say, to be dissed as "demented" or insane by a murderer who gets a 19-year sentence for shooting Lana Clarkson is hilarious...calling the kettle black, Phil! I know you are reading this Spector, sitting in your cell
@carbine125 Agree. That's the distinct impression I get about Steve Jobs after reading his bio. Superlative achievers too often seem to have something missing in their personality that makes them less than admirable human beings.
@DimensionsofChange I recall from a biography that Mr. Specter takes serious medication for mental illness, which might explain the slur. His jealousy of Brian Wilson never ceases to amaze and sicken.
As much as I love the work of Spector and Wilson, they both are perfect examples of lives with too much drugs and money. Listen to Phil talk...and then talk about Brian. The pot calling the kettle...funny but also sad.
@28mark I suspect that Spector's speech affect here is more a result of the head trauma from his auto accident than from drug consumption. That's also why he wears the wacky wigs.
You'll probably be called somebody's baby now in your new home Phil. Just make sure that you buy shower gel instead. Mean Streets could still have worked without 'Be my Baby', but admittedly it did help the film.
That 'Good Vibrations' is an "edit record" is a red herring; lest you think otherwise Phil Spector, you're not, nor have you ever been, fit to grovel at the musical feet of Brian Wilson. He's a bona fide genius, and you've cut a few decent records. There are precious few of the former, and many of the latter. Get over yourself, Brian eclipsed you (and nearly everyone) loooong ago.
Spector's "Wall of Sound" was different in its day but there is nothing inherently clever or technically brilliant about it. Looking back on it now, its just a mid-range explosion of sound with no subtlety at all.
Spector has dined out on the undeserved myth that it was, and sill is, something special. He's clearly deluded and crossed the line when he criticises Brian Wilson's work.
@kts68 sorry, but bollocks. Are great singers just people producing high range pitched notes from their throats, great guitarists justs people producing patterned combinations of notes from plucked stringed instruments etc. Its imagination, the foundation fo all great art. If you dont see it then maybe its not there for you but the world did.
Phil is a legend but he is totally paranoid and jealous of Brian Wilson. You don't go on and on trying to discredit someone's work if you think so little of them.
my mistake M3town3. But it illustrates the point even better. That song is nice to listen to but it's hardly anything special. And as far as the production race...Spector is great but can't match Brian.
Not taking away from Phil's talent, but he is 100% wrong in condemning ANY of Brian's work. Little Deuce Coupe may not be lyrically mature, but it's certainly lyrically superior to "To Know Him Is To Love HIm", and that took three people to write; one of them being Phil. BTW, Brian surpassed the wall of sound technique in the 60's Phil...and let's not call people crazy if you don't want the finger pointed at you. Brian's not in prison for murder.
@Griffinication To Know Him Is To Love Him was the first song Phil ever wrote. By himself... and it went to number one. Now just that prooves you how much talent he had. could Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys do that?
@Griffinication Brian never reached the maturity of Spector's work. Spector made adult records with adult emotions, Wilson made bubble gum records that imitated Spector's songs.
