  • If you like Southern Soldier Boy theresehl, you may like the song Lorena, it was very popular during the war on both sides. Deo Vindice

  • Your BEAUTIFUL VOICE and MARVELLOUS INTERPRETATION of this song, reminds me of autumn and golden leaves falling down to the ground - so many of them as the souls of those who fought and died defending their own land.

...and not even their memory is being left in peace, as the memory of all those who died in War shall be - even their graves are being spit upon...

Thank You for Your beautiful musical tribute.

You REALLY have a lot of talent.

  • A wonderful voice that catches peoples attention. I have played this video at several meeting (with a lot of people present) and everyone stops what they are doing and listens. Her voice and a simple guitar can stop all other activity when she is playing over and over again. Get ready for the next war here in the USA. It is coming. Vote with your wallet and buy more ammo ASAP. MGK/GDW!

  • OMG. that what so beautiful!! It brought a tears to my eyes. My ancestors would have been proud to hear u sing this song in such a beautiful manner like you did. Thank you.

  • This is without a doubt, the best version of this song I have ever heard. Well done!!!

  • All this has gotten far off the point.

No doubt it's a nice song, but my dear Therese, Google "Hans Christian Heg" and know that the Norwegians played a not insignificant role in preserving the Union during the American Civil War.

  • To everyone else who have commented: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS! :)

  • @theresehl Amazing, is there any way we can download your version of the song?

If not I hope we can soon because this is easily the best version I have ever heard.

  • @TennesseeReb1862 and @KrSund70

Thank you both for your comments and the history lessons ;) I am partially aware of Norway's role in the American civil war and that most of those involved in it were part of the northern alliance. Me singing this song has nothing to do with Norwegian history at all. Neither has it to do with me supporting the Confederacy (which I do not). I have my own reasons to sing it and those who know me, know those reasons :)

  • @theresehl I really liked your version it sounds proper but the fact that u don't support the Confederacy makes me think that u Europeans are full of stereotypes...Anyway great song

  • @Jeffanos I can applaude the fact that any soldier goes to war for what he believes in, but I can't applaude what the Confederates stood for. That is my personal opinion though, not every single European's.

  • @theresehl Therese the Confederacy stood for independence, more Northerners owned slaves than Southerners, the North tried to invade the South with intentions of burning down Charlotte North Carolina, the capital of the CSA at the time, the Virginia Militia stopped them at Manassas Virginia. the last person to free her slaves was President Ulysses Grants wife in 1869, 5 years after the war ended. the war was fought over the Norths aggression, money, and greed

  • @theresehl Let me say, there are many lies surrounding the events of the "civil" war. Most northerners are taught an alternate version of this period of history. History is written by the victor. Actually, most people these days are taught these lies.

  • 43@theresehl Excuse me ma'am but the Confederates did NOT stand for slavery if that's what you are refering to. Only about 15% of southern men owned a slave, and most of the ones that did was the Governments doing, not the soldiers themselves. Most southern soldiers were fighting out of necessity or they heard the North was Invading the South. My G-G-G Grandfather did not fight for any slaves. He fought for his home and land.

  • @theresehl And Excuse me as I forgot to mention that you also sang this song beautifully.

  • Although after Antietam and the emancipation proclaimation, it did become an official federal war aim.

It's not murder when the other side is carrying arms too. Remember who fired on Sumter first.

  • I am sure more than a few hundred union soldiers would have said that one of their reasons for enlisting was to end slavery. You exaggerate.

Read what I posted when I mentioned slavery, it was a carry over from the previous post, I said Norwegians have a strong sense of justice and it's important to remember Heg's reasons for going to war, to honor their new country/government, and to fight slavery. I never said the "North" got into the war to end slavery.

  • The war was not, but to individuals it was, and Heg's own reasons certainly involved slavery. I said it was important to remember Heg's reasons for going to war.

  • The British were in danger of losing their N. American colonies, just as the United States were in danger of losing the 13 Southern states, but in neither case was there an invasion, as invasion is possible only AFTER you establish sovereignty, which does not exist simply from a declaration.

  • Individuals discriminated, but the government for which they fought welcomed them.

Merely declaring something, doesn't make it true as a matter of law. There's one big difference between the Declaration of Independence and Ft. Sumter -- We won the Revolutionary War. The British invaded during the War of 1812, but did not "invade" during the Revolutionary War, as the sovereignty of the United States was still yet unsettled.

  • And to help end that greatest institution of inequality, slavery.

I understand that Yankee Version of Dixie was sung on the march by federal columns regularly during the war.

Google Hans Christian Heg to read more about him and the 15th Wisconsin. The Norwegian American Historical Association published a book about the regiment in the early 2000's called "Colonel Heg and His Boys: A Norwegian Regiment in the American Civil War," it is hard to find today, but a gem if you do.

  • You can't invade your own country. So your #3 is hardly a "fact." As for your #2, Again, nearly all Scandinavians settled in the upper Midwest, so your analogy is not entirely on point.

Yes it was a pointless war, but make no mistake about it, we wouldn't be the great nation that we have been, and are today if the South had won. Scandinavians have a strong sense of justice and loyalty, and it's important to remember Heg's reasons for going to war ... to honor the land that welcomed them,

  • Even in WI, the Norwegians were discriminated against and did not get the same sending off as the other WI regiments made up of home-born troops. (Similar to then-existing attitudes about the Germans as well). Yet Lincoln himself said: "I know the Norwegians, No immigrants have served America better than they."

Today, Heg stands proudly in Madison in the capitol square. When arranging a meeting, the older generation would typically say: "I'll meet you by the Heg statue."

  • @TennesseeReb1862

Certainly not. Merely accenting the irony, as the song is called Southern Soldier Boy, and of course, Heg was shot by one.

Heg, if you must know, was a great hero, and the highest ranking officer from Wisconin to die during the war. The 15th was heavily engaged at Perryville, Stone's River, Chickamauga, and the road to Atlanta. Being farmers in a genetically homogenous regiment, the 15th also lost a disproportionate share to disease.

  • So, my reply to you sir is: To the tune of Dixie: "Away douth South in the land of traitors Rattlesnakes and alligators Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land Where cotton's king and men are chattel Union boys will win the battles Look away, look away, look away, Dixie land Then we'll all go down to Dixie, hurray hurray Each Southern boy will understand that he must mind his Uncle Sam Away, away, away on down to Dixie!" :-)
  • @TennesseeReb1862

    1. It might be nice for a Norwegian who is going to sing a song about the American Civil War to know about her people's role in it.

    2. Entire Irish regiments fought for the South. 15th WI was the ONLY all Scandinavian regiment in the war. Your analogy, sir, fails to hold water.

    3. You purport to say, let bygones be bygones has Heg is "having a beer" with Lee in heaven, yet you are clearly biased and state in the same posting that Heg "died invading" the South

  • To recruit the young Norwegians recently arrived from Norway to Wisconsin Heg stated: "The land which we, as strangers, have made our home has received us with friendship and hospitality. We enjoy equal privileges with the native born. The path to honor and fortune is alike open to us and them. The law protects and befriends us all alike. Let us prove ourselves worthy of that land and of those heroes from whom we descend."

Three cheers for the Union and Norge!!!

  • FYI -- You should know that most Norwegians, of course, settled in the North (Wisconsin, Minnesota, etc.) and fought for the Union. The 15th Wisconsin, in fact, was an all Norwegian regiment led by Col. Hans Christian Heg, who was killed at Chickamauga in Sept. 1863, no doubt by a "Southern soldier boy."

There are monuments to his honor in both Madison, Wisconsin near the capital building and in his hometown of Haugestad in Lier (i Norge).

  • @colt112 Tusen takk for kjempehyggelig kommentar! Selv om jeg synger sangen pga kjærlighetsaspektet, så må man faktisk beundre soldater som går ut i krig og kjemper for den saken de tror på.

He is with the Colonial Marines & has a radio show called the intelligence report. I hear this song every week & this is my first time to hear it on youtube. I must say, I am amazed at your talent. Your voice has raised the will for all of us to fight again. I am a southern soldier boy with no one waiting for me, but your song makes me feel better just the same.
