  • In that a person has to dig through "social pablum" and "mind-numbing entertainment" to even find something of such...substance...is very telling. Very telling of the "dumbing-down" of contemporary society and the hegemonic agenda that, ultimately, will lead us all from liberty and independence to control and bondage... The plan of the "invisible hand" is comming to fruition as men, such as Harold Pinter, become more-rare and, ultimately, extinct.

  • “The search for the truth can never stop. It cannot be adjourned, it cannot be postponed. It has to be faced, right there, on the spot.”

    ~ Harold Pinter

  • does anyone know where i can get a good quality version of this to watch on a large screen?

  • A brilliant lecture. It deserves a lot more views than 55 000.

Thanks for uploading such great art!

  • @ningudo Which is precisely my dear why, lamentably, it does not have them. As the most rated comment painfully points out, the lack of kitties and/or tits and asses makes for a rather uninteresting view. We've been bamboozled and anesthetised by infatilising and idiotinsing distractions. A shocking indictment, but not of anyr media, but our own species.

"I would give this lecture a thousand 'Like' if I could. R.I.P. Harold Pinter."

    MaryJoFJensen

    So would I.

  • prejudice brit whos talent expired in the 70s...fuck harold pinter...he in no way is of nobel caliber

"i have no idea why they gave me the award" - harold pinter

  • @vex15423xum Thankfully your own immense talent is not on the verge of expiring any time soon - it appears to be just blossoming - so we can hopefully all look forward to more of your enlightening comments on here and elsewhere, and why not a Nobel prize in the near future... I don't know why anybody would bother watching videos like this one when we can all just listen to you instead....

  • "...can never be purged; and can never be forgiven." Tragically, the perpetrators will never be held accountable. Mr. Pinter's speech is an antidote the 'Kool-Aid' we are forced to drink by the media. His words cut through all the spin, BS, and PR we are bombarded with. He was a brave, honest, and moral man. We so desperately need more like him.

  • I would give this lecture a thousand 'Like' if I could. R.I.P. Harold Pinter.

  • Dying of cancer and yet still has theatre in his blood! :') Good sir, you have been a pillar!

  • A million thanks for posting this!!!!

  • Thanks for posting this video of Pinter.

  • You know, he played a warrior monk in Dr Who?

  • only 47 1/2 thousand views? And kittens doing funny things get a million. Shocking indictment of this media

  • @ronnie9253

This video could have been seen a million times ... it would not be the first time that youtube have reset the counter. Only things that are not a danger to "them" are hits with millions of views.

There are no real free media left - those few that we can find are strugling because they cant get the money to run.

PS: Why do youtube always recommend videos about McDonalds or Lady Gaga to me? I have no interesset in them and have not seen any vid about them.

  • I share your view! We live in a world of Philistines.

  • @ronnie9253 Its not an indictment of this media; without this media, no one would have seen it, except a handful of people in Stockholm. The low view count is an

indictment of our educational system, which leaves people completely untutored in the idea of moral responsibility, as well as unable to concentrate and understand complex language such as Pinter uses, or the historical context of what he discusses.

  • @ronnie9253 Or a not so shocking indictment of the Nobel Prize Committee.

  • @ronnie9253

That fat kid singing about cupcakes has 50 million views and Lady Gaga gets 300 million views. We are so fucked.

  • Hi!I do respect this Man so much I learnt a lot from his ideas but the main quesiton was the disconnecteion betwenn his mind and his plays when he made a connection between nature and life avoidin God and the question now is where is he now ?and till what extend he could reach lead the humanity towards the best .where is the freedom Brothers as well as the playwrifhts say "trust the tale not the teller"

    thanks

  • this man is a legend!

  • Can anyone help me? im trying to explain the influences on harold pinters work and i cant find anything on the internet, any help?

  • Read his books, watch his plays!

  • Rest In Piece Mr. Pinter. Thank you for saying many words of wisdom & opening the minds for many people in the world! This planet needs more people like you!

  • He first snuck into the theatrical world but even better this speech has made a fine dramatic and yet bold exit towards his final death. What a wonderful gift to leave us pondering and inspired by. May your words travel like a ripple in the still waters and create a new transition in humanity.

  • And how many Nobel prizes has your superior mind won?

  • @jl331 And certainly will improve as lot more when you have the final decency of taking your trolling to the grave.

  • We ' l miss you Harold Pinter..

  • That Neruda poem is intense. And is it just me or does it look like Pinter goes into a trance when he's reciting it.

  • Meanwhile, to return to Pinter's Nobel Lecture....

"The United States supported and in many cases engendered every right wing military dictatorship in the world after the end of the Second World War."

  • "The United States supported and in many cases engendered every right wing military dictatorship in the world after the end of the Second World War."

  • So many deaths, so much suffering, just to "protect my ass".

  • Or perhaps the USA governments and corporations felt a greater affinity with Nazism.

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."

  • Socialism is a statist ideology that aims at constructing a society in which the means of production are socialized. Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy were socialist countries. Look at the measures taken by the governments of fascist Italy and Nazi Germany to combat the effects of the Great Depression.

  • Both countries engaged in very strong collusion between business and government, with the result that businessmen had a degree of control over state policy, and the state had a degree of control over the economy. Using this mechanism, fascists and Nazis were able to fix prices, determine the level of wages, and put up barriers to entry in important markets (so as to give their business allies the power to form oligopolies or monopolies).

  • Fascists and Nazis placed high tariffs on imported goods, for the purpose of achieving economic self-sufficiency (autarky), which would enable them to wage war without fear of international economic sanctions.

These policies are socialist, because the policies exercised what is believed to be excessive control over the means or production.

Collectivism has many names; Nazism, communism, facism.. its all the same really.

  • Hitler collaboreted with Stalin, Ribbentrop-Molotov pact it is called. Right wing leaders like Churchill warned for hitler in the 20s when everybody was laughing at him.

  • LOL

  • Could you explain how the toppling of the democratically elected government of Allende in Chile helped to defeat Communism ?

  • Well its easy to be smart now when we know how brutal Pinochet was, In my opinion it was a mistake to remove Alllende but at that time I would probably think its going to be perfect.

  • It was easy to know before hand how brutal he was. How do you think any population will feel when their democratically elected popular government is over-thrown by fascists !

Of course there was going to be blood-shed.

At the time there was international outcry over it.

Allende was anti American business interests.

So the CIA organised a coup against him.

I'm not anti American. I love the place. But you have to call this for what it was. A cold calculating move to put business over people.

  • Youu never explained how murdering Allende and his cabinet helped in the war against Communism.

Can you do any better with the following ?

All our CIA coup d'etats.resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.

1957 -73. Multiple operations ran against the people of Laos.

1959 - Duvalier Thug put in charge of Haiti.

1962 - elected President Velasco murdered in Ecuador. We ALL know what a threat Ecuador must have been !!!

1964 - Elected Pres. Goulart murdered in Brazil.

    Come on explain.

  • Well Ecuador is small but just think of how the world would look today if we would have given away all small countries to the soviets.

  • wtf??? But at the time (that it was done, i.e. removing Allende), it was going to be perfect (i.e. the right thing to do)???

It was wrong then, and it's even worse now (based on what we know). No Monday morning quarterbacking here. Just a fucked up US policy that was diregeur for many years.

  • We all know that US foreign policy is fucked up but we do nothing about it. If you do a bit you'lll feel better. That's Monday morning quaterbacking for you.

  • @BukowskiPineapple Anyone explaining that without lying or twisting the truth would have to be...

there's just no way of doing so. Allende nationalised Chilen copper, to the loss of USA interests and was toppled because he was a threat to that curious brand of Neofeudalism that Chile still today call democracy.

Chile has been Coca-colonised beyond description and recovery. It's not about patriotsm for me though I'm chilean. it is about our dehumanisation.

  • the truth lives on.

  • Pinter "A dumb communist"? a "dangerous" playwright? It's people like you who really scare me.

  • This is one of the most important lectures ever to have been recorded! I wonder why Sweden is one of the countries with no American military presence?Yes,we´re a neutral country, but also the Scandinavian country to be safe from the Nazis. We let them transport prisoners,Iron &weapons through our country & one big Nazi was married to a Swedish woman & Nazism was widely spread.Does this mean we still are "safe" from the Fascist American military influence?I don´t know, but it makes you wonder...

  • I have just caught the last half an hour or so of this utterly, spine tingling speech. The honesty and the truth of it is as sharp as the American knife that will, as surely as the sun gives light, end all our lives, in one way or another. I'm so sorry this man (HP) is no longer with us. I hope he is listened to and his words are adhered to.

  • There is nothing greater than a man who exhibits the courage of his convictions. Harold Pinter was one such man. R.I.P.

  • couldn't agree more

  • I am so sad to hear his passing. This talk was one of my favorites. I didn't check to see if it was here until now.

  • A great artist and a good man. A clear presentation here of human responsibility as both an artist and a moral being. A shame that he is gone, as we need his voice now. Along with the others we have recently lost (Said, Sontag, Miller).

  • One of my heroes. RIP

  • Rest in peace Harold Pinter. And thank you...

  • Pinter never forgot the colonial crimes of his own country just so you know. He denounces the actions of BOTH governments of the US and UK, and I say GOVERNMENTS, not COUNTRIES.

Imperialism is a crime no matter what it is dressed up as.

  • once again couldn't agree more. Such intelligence on a youtube comments page is rare and inspiring

  • For a clearer copy and sharper sound quality of this important speech go to the Nobel Laureates web page.

  • So much bullshit and so few perceptive, honest, courageous, articulate minds. Pinter is a fucking inspiration. If only there were a thousand more like him. Thanks for putting this online.

  • you know it is people like Pinter who probably give people in The Arab world a little bit of hope. That we're not all blind to the injustices taken in our name by a cartel of self-serving, blinkered idiots. Oh and thanks ISRAEL for blowing up some kiddies for Christmas. And wasn't that a pretty dish to set before the king...

  • If you are reading this AND you took the time to listen to the late Mr. Pinter's speech above, you owe it to your self to forward the link on to someone else.

I'm not sure if there is a more powerful presentation of the human spirit out there than this acceptance speech.

  • thanks

  • Just learned about this from DemocracyNow.

    Thanks for posting his video!

  • i got rated -6 for agreeing with the guy in the video. fascinating how people misunderstand.

  • i hung on his every word, I hope many millions of people to come will too. thank you Mr pinter, RIP.

  • This may've been his most powerful performance. It certainly stands proudly alongside his most brilliant pieces of work.

  • Very worthwhile to have listened to. Thank you for uploading.

  • Rest in peace, Mr Pinter. A great man.

  • Farewell to Harold Pinter. Brave men like him are scarce and far between. Rest in peace while unworthy people like Blair or Bush linger on as morality polluters.

  • Powerful stuff.

Thank you for sharing and rest in peace Mr. Pinter!

  • One of natures gentlemen, a mind of the highest order. we wish you a fine journey in the afterlife.

  • Thank you, sir. RIP.

  • RIP

  • actor, poet and playwright.

    - a brave, talented and articulate man

who had a fine nose for detecting the Truth.

he dared say the words that many of us are not allowed to speak.

    Vale Harold Pinter.

  • Rest in peace, Mr. Pinter.

  • A great man.

  • R.I.P.

  • R.I.P. Give Monroe a poke for me :P

  • RIP, brilliant playwright.

  • RIP

  • He's a friggin genious. <3.

  • Amingr and tubedeejay, I think you are right when you speak of the hypocrisy of individuals when they criticise the actions of others without considering their own. However, I really don't think Harold Pinter comes into this as he has time and again denounced the complicity of his country's government in US foreign policy activities. What's more I think it's fine for an individual, simply out of internationalist conscience rather than national loyalty, to criticise another government's policy.

  • ...pause...

  • Mr. Pinter is not only one of the great literary figures, but a man of immense compassion and a great social and political critic. One has to pity the idiots who are afraid of Mr. Pinter, afraid of his ideas, his integrity.

  • Every person of truth turns an upsidedown world a little more upright.

If only the news stations of the world would show us one of these every evening...this world would be turned upright before it shrugs us off its back.

  • For a better sound quality, go to the Nobel Laureates web page. A clear copy of this can be found there.

  • I wonder at the comments below that, based on this speech, brand Pinter as 'weird' & 'eccentric'.

What sort of society, perceives intelligent, articulate eloquence as something to ridicule? Is this the very society that Pinter refers to in his speech? The society of hypocritical 'do what I say, not what I do', unthinking, unquestioning, uneducated, unconscionable insular imperialist terrorists.

  • To finish:

I'm so sick of reading predictable and ridiculous flames, aimed at commendably active and liberal thinkers.

Do you think you have something better to say? No. Perhaps you'll just go back to your latest console game, or watch another mind-numbing episode of your favourite tv show.

If anything, I agree with 'Kneegoaty'. What are we to do next? Continue damaging liberal politics with this naive ambition for non-conformity?

  • To continue (croscros):

Pinter is not suggesting "literature is quicksand". To deduce this from his speech is absolutely ludicrous.

If anything, if you listen to the rest of his speech, he fires a very hard edged arrow at the US government (or where you too enraged at the thought of him throwing rubber arrows at Shakespeare?)

He might be a "weiner" I don't know (this is far too Freudian for me to comment.) I do know that he is an eloquent and critically acclaimed writer. What are you?

  • Wonderful Speech.

  • This is , imho, the voice of a humane genius . essential active positive political thinking.

    Straight to babylon head.

croscros has their lines crossed. he throws nothing negative at shakespeare et al.

  • Genius and truthful.

If you've got ears, please listen to him.

  • he is wierd and annoying I defenitly agree with you!

  • How is this a constructive criticism?? The man's trying to make a point!

You are 9 years old - read a book. This man has lived through a world war, he has seen more and heard more terrible things on the news than the average living person.

If, at the age of 77, this guy can string a comprehensible sentence together don't you think he's entitled to be a little bit "wierd"?

  • whatever and I have read books more like 500 so I dont think you should be talkin

  • Well for a 9 year old that is impressive. however, it doesn't devalue what I was saying does it. I've read lots of his plays and he is a theatrical legend. Unfortunately (or not, I'm not sure) theatrical legends in Britain tend to be a little eccentric!l ol

  • okay, for a 9 year old I have no Idea what you just said lol, but I was wondering if you now so much then how old are you?!

  • Wierd and annoying? Depends on what you view that is. I wouldn't think so.

Life experience and human understanding can give you wisdom far superior to any book.

    500 books is very impressive!

  • Q. 'What does he mean when he says language in art is 'a quicksand?'

    A. I believe that it is an abstraction. To quote the entire sentence: So language in art remains a highly ambiguous transaction, a quicksand, a trampoline, a frozen pool which might give way under you, the author, at any time.

He is referring to language in art as ambiguous. I think he is suggesting, as an ethical disposition, the artist is morally obliged not to allow his personal feelings to interfere with his/her writing.

  • O.k understood. I accept these issues. What now. How do we respond?

  • The Truth speaks for itself:)

    GENIUS

  • Wise words coming from a wise man. Realising that very few people can recognize the truth makes me feel dissapointed and pessimistic.

We need people like you Harold Pinter, to give us HOPE.

  • You don't have to be american in order to understand Bush.Just to realize the fact that, by using lies,he tricked many to a war, that has cost the lives of thousands of people. That's reason enough for me,for everyone to hate Bush and his minions, as the cost of a SINGLE life is invaluavle, let alone the deaths that he is responsible for...

  • He is a murderer, and should account for his crimes. The man that claims that he fights terrorism and exports ''democracy'', is actually the No1 terrorist in the world.

  • Bush is part of a bloodline and organization that has caused all the wars and famine and death during the 20th Century, not to mention the overall bad mental health that is dividing and conquering the planet... I agree that an eye for an eye leaves everyone blind, tho...

  • I don't like Osama. I don't understand what u mean by this. If you read Pinter's speech carefully, you'll note that it is precisely with this notion of being a "US citizen" that your government is justifying its endless crimes to humanity. COME ON NOW! Wake up!

Yes I do believe Pinter probably does HATE Bush. That does not make him a hypocrite...

  • NO HYPOCRISY THERE ... LISTEN AGAIN, PAY ATTENTION; he has taken a clear & unequivocal stand against ALL INJUSTICE. HE DOESN'T LET EITHER COUNTRY OFF THE HOOK!

We cannot improve as nations or people if we refuse to recognize the wrongs -- AND CORRECT THEM!

THE ACCUSATIONS ARE TRUE, WELL DOCUMENTED, & LARGELY IGNORED BY BIG MEDIA!

I recommend a reading of "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn. GET AN EDUCATION!

  • @lysel3 God bless you my dear.

  • Oh, didn't know that he spoke as a country, not a person. Must I always agree with the policy of the country I live in? Boring politics in that case, and undemocratic... ;-)

  • He doesn't yell. He describes facts. Read and listen to what he actually says. He is as critical of British policy as of American.

  • You FAILED TO NOTICE that Mr. Pinter ADDRESSED THE IMMORAL ACTIONS OF BOTH THE US & THE UK!

Perhaps you need to view the tape again -- AND PAY ATTENTION!!!

  • One is history and can't be changed. The other is an ongoing crime that has to be stopped. Quite a difference.

  • How convenient of you to term the ongoing consequences of your colonial crimes as "history" and the US invasion on oil-rich countries as an "on-going crime". I say some people are suffering from what is called the "little man's syndrome"

  • Well, point taken that you could probably try to "undo" some damage that historical colonialism did.

I still think though, that stopping the ongoing massive crimes makes a bigger impact and it would be comparably easy.

So I think there is good reason to look right now at the US - and as Pinter actually points out - share the guilt, since UK and the rest of Europe is usually in complicity.

  • Truth is NOT extremism ... Furthermore, since when does one have to be a US citizen to be permitted to comment on injustices & wrongs which have affected so many?

As for "Hate" ... What do you call "Shock & Awe", Cluster Bombs, Mines, Missiles, Invasion, Occupation, total destruction of a sovereign nation!

Is that your idea of "LOVE"??

    YOU are the HYPOCRITE!

"In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." ~ George Orwell (1903 - 1950) ~

  • please, get better glasses and read my comments carefully. Did I ever suggest that missiles and bombs are my idea of "LOVE"? Or did I imply that people who criticize US foreign policy should be somehow violently shut up? I said that it is hypocritical to accuse USA of committing "crimes" in order to further its national interests while forgetting the colonial crimes of one's own country. Apart from a HYPOCRITE you are also BLIND

  • i just realized that I responded to a wrong message that was not addressed to me. I have to apoogize for that.

  • Do you not like blind people?

  • Every word considered, deliberate and true.

  • the majority of the world, but especially those of us in the US are asleep at the wheel. It takes a major personal crisis to truly awaken, or a speech like this one. Gaining consciousness is the ultimate revolution. Wake up. Speak out. Act out.

  • fucking hell, i first saw this when it was aired, it is so true and well put, harold is a fucking genius

  • theres missin audio at 30:00+ mins.. he said "The invasion of Iraq was a bandit act, an act of blatant state terrorism, demonstrating absolute contempt for the concept of international law. The invasion was .."

  • god i was looking for this since i watched it aired on uk tv.

  • really? where did u look? Did you try a Google search maybe?

  • Pinter is a GREAT, and i mean, GREAT, British playwright!!!! To be GREAT, all you need is to have enough BALLS to tell the truth!!!!

  • Wonderful Speech.. Thanks you Pinter

  • America - like Britain and most industrial nations - is only sold the illusion of "freedom". You are as free as they allow you to be... In the end, it´s all just a big pile of steaming Dog Shit! Thank You Harold Pinter!

  • this man is absolutely amazing. he sees EVERYTHING that is covered up by the idiotic american politics and the british suckers following it. this is the TRUTH. stående ovationer.

  • Its depressing but true .The USA has made the world an ugly place with our help .

  • What the world is in desperate need of in these times, is courage. It gives me hope to see that there is at least one man in the west who has the courage to speak his mind of the atrocities the USA have commited. Maybe one day, we'll have several. Thank you, smulankatten.

  • Come and see the blood in the streets...

I am very much in favor of the media showing images of violence from war. People who are in favor of war should have to look at it. They should have to see the gore everyday the war continues. Then maybe it would not be non-violence that seems irrational. Thank you Pinter.

  • Wow! Incredible Speech. Gave me goosebumps.

    Magnificent intelligent man.

  • wonderful man! i was surprised to see this on the television thow it was on gone midnight.

  • I think Pinter would appreciate being flagged as inappropriate. A small mind panics when what he beleives to be true is challenged. D

  • Mr. Pinter was used to controversy, because he had the courage to TELL THE TRUTH, so, yes, the "inappropriate" flagging, indicates a mental midget going into panic mode ... Silly little man! LOL

  • UN-FLAG THIS PLEASE!

  • Thank you smulankatten for this.

  • Inappropriate? Hard to believe.

  • Truth is inappropriate for the powerful.

  • Ditto

  • who marked this as inappropriate ?

  • powerful speech.

  • yeah.. how can a video be unflagged ?

  • 11.22.06

I will contact someone with some authority at the Google YouTube network to see what can be done about removing the inappropriate flagging of this essential video of a speech by the Nobel Prize Winner in Literature, Harold Pinter.

    ~Thomas~

  • Thank you very much.

  • Mr. Pinter, I salute you!!

  • PLEASE remove inappropriate status...

  • It is still flagged as inappropriate. Can someone at YouTube please remedy this.

  • 11.22.06

Dandin1. I will do my best to get the flag removed.

    "cat"

  • thank you

  • I'm pleased that I had the opportunity to watch this. Harold Pinter - The Dignity of Man.

    "cat"

  • glad u isolated the closing phrase, that's what moved me the most, too

  • thanks for posting this...its unbelievable...i gotta know about this from the Guardian website..and then the NOBEL website...its such a POWERFUL POWERFUL speech.

  • wonderful, and very appropriate

  • I agree. I enterpret it as a form of censorship! Damn illegal.

  • Who FUCKING flagged this is inappropriate?

  • must have been a journalist or something...

  • Just amazing!! Such a tremendous lecture!

And as bogenc said, why "inappropriate"? Inappropriate for who?
