It really surpirse me when i listen to the recording of "Die Forelle" when she was 57 years old...her voice is still pure like a young girl...her Zerlina is an excellent sample for this role.
I have a quite similar timbre like Siepi and he´s so a good example for my studies; because I´m a german bass and italian singing I´m not THAT used to it, so its just great to see and hear him here on youtube:-)
This is completely ridiculous. Listen to those E naturals - let's be clear, F natural is the bass' "high C". Look elsewhere on youtube to hear Siepi's low low C. This man had as low and rich a voice as any bass, and to be able to sing those high notes so sweetly... I'm convinced he was making unholy sacrifices in the wings to be able to sing like that. Amazing.
Siepi - always good for making you feel like your technique sucks. :)
I don't think so 'songbirdwatcher'. This is a true classic interpretation, which is still quite popular. There is more sweet sensualness in the duett this way, than if the performers would race through it, like if they were just making arrangements for a contemporary style 'quicky'. ☺
I am aslo used to quicker tempos in Don Giovanni. In the firt minutes, when listening this, I am disturbed but after that I find it wonderful. When used to this performance, I am disturbed in the first minutes when listening to quick tempos, but after that find it wonderful also ! Besides, Siepi and Berger own among the most beautiful voices ever.
Is the conductor Furtwangler or Mitropoulos? I usually admire them. Whoever it is, they have a fundamental misunderstanding of how this should be conducted; it is subdivided and slow unto almost being stillborn. Also, the impetus is not on the bouyant upbeat. The marvelous singers are trying, heaven knows!
Really impressive. Not only two voices that fit exactly their roll demands, Berger and Siepi are giving a masterpiece of Mozart- singing:simplicity and expression of the dramatic situation.
Quite an impressive perf. in it's way. Maybe more vacillation and coyness by Zerlina in the first part. Siepi is as close to perfection as one can get. I know light baritone Dons maybe be fashionable (and justifiable in some sense) but as long as a bass has that lightness & honeyed ease up around c-sharp, d, e, he's ok in my book!
Yes, I agree; I much prefer a bass or bass-baritone in this role because it adds a degree of sensuality and virility that is physically not available to most baritone sounds. I wonder how Bastianini would have sounded in this role, that most virile of baritones! Siepi and Pinza are my two favorite Don Giovannis.

Being a baritone myself, I may be bias; but I prefer a light lyric baritone in this role. With the Commendatore, Leporello, and Masetto all singing in the basement, you need the lighter baritone for contrast. I would hate to imagine the final trio with three basses.
Well sorbino, you have to remember that the Don doesn't care if the girl he's after is unattractive or not, all that matters to him is if she's a woman.

So slow! Good legs (on him). Although the voice is beautiful, I find it "swallowed"
and a tad difficult to listen to for long. Compare to Gobbi, who is altogether more
alive and much less mannered.

Hai ragione!
