@katella12 .....From VisionsLA...I had to review the posts to see where that was put up. Yes, you are correct it was Mort Lindsay...I would have corrected it if I had seen it. Thank you...Pete and Jack were the best of friends always...great affection for one another. Jack is great...and of course Pete was the best of best, I know!!!
Trumpets - left to right: Pete Candolo, Graham Young, Al Aarons, Oscar Brashear. (Some asked about the trumpets.) Bill Watrous on tbone. Don Menza on tenor. Someone already identified Ray Pizzi.
Dick Nash: "I don’t think any of us saw the music. We just walked in, and there it was. We were very impressed. It was going to be a TV show, and to have all the good jazz guys in LA involved with it made for quite a get-together. We had Jimmy Priddy, John Haliburton and Karl De Karske on trombones, and Pete Candoli and Conrad Gozzo on trumpets. Milt Bernhart (trombone) did some sessions. And we had Johnny Williams. When he would have a solo, Pete would really get the essence of what Hank was do
I saw Henry Mancini's appearance on the Merv Griffin show. He credited Merv's music director, Jack Sheldon, with having played the trumpet lead on the original recording of the Peter Gunn Theme.
@SteveFallon1 "When he would have a solo, Pete would really get the essence of what Hank was doing. He gave a tribute to Pete and it was humbling for Pete as he was there from the begining...
The bassoon work up front is cool but we don't hear the Peter Gunn theme until 1:55 or so. The magic of this number is the underlying riff, not in the solo work, no matter how talented the soloists..
@davidpalmquist I had to cut the opening footage for personal reasons...This is the way Mancini did it, and perhaps you can find something you like about it??? Yes, the soloists were talented and no one else has complained...sorry you were not happy...
Sorry, I wasn't trying to offend you. I over-edited my original message. I'm not a fan of loud jazz solos with too many notes, although I like the last minute or so of this video, once the theme becomes prominent.
I do like much of Mancini's film music; his autobiography, which I read many years ago, says the challenge in writing film themes is in being careful not to distract the audience from the film itself. In 1966, I saw him in Vancouver, sharing the stage with Brasil '66.
@davidpalmtwister That's too bad about you not liking loud jazz solos. I think that can be the most entertaining part of a performance. Take my band's new Peter Gunn video - we play it loud and fast. And most people our sayin' it's the best version on youtube.
Basically I was saying that rockitboy was out of line to comment on how the video sounded since he did not upload the video. The video is good BTW. Seeing Hank perform more than makes up for the audio quality. I've always liked his music.
I don't like the way this was miked. The trumpet solos are practically inaudible, even though they're obviously blowing their chops out. Mancini deserves better.
@rockitboy You obviously are not the poster of this video so you have no right to comment on the audio. Obviously this is the best quality that could be put here.
You obviously missed the point I was trying to make. Since you do not have the original video and only saw what is on you tube you cannot rightly say the audio sucks, because while it is not good quality here the original video surely sounds excellent.
buy ur own and ask ur music teacher to get music for the oboe for u and then get private lessons for the oboe and ur set unless u dont got the money which i dont have learn it on ur own or ask ur teacher to go over basics of it and pick up from there
they sound like they are not in synch

@quazar912 It is called jazz! Sycopation is part of it all. After an eight bar break everyone comes back in sync.

A correction on the reference to Merv Griffin's musical director. It was Mort Lindsay, not Jack Sheldon. Jack did play in that band, however.

@SteveFallon1 Jack S. was not the musical director on Merv's show, and he is not a lead player. He may have played the solo.
