Mandarin is one of them, but is also the least likely spoken language during that time. This is taking into consideration that Mulan's poem was first written in the 6th century, with records that she lived around 300+ A.D. Mandarin only started taking shape roughly 700 or so years ago.

mama and papa are universal which is really interesting. Obviously there are variations but in so many languages it sounds the same it cant be a coincidence.

Yes, you're right. It's not a coincidence. We used to call mum as "Niang" (娘) and dad as "Dier" (爹) (and no, I don't know pinyin. Took a rough estimate). Apparently, we changed to Mama (媽) and Baba(爸) due to Western influences, roughly after the 1900's. = =|||

In case of Chinese, its merely a loanword, Chinese have their own word for mother, it's just that East Asians love borrowing small "accessories" of Western culture. For instance, in Turkic languages we have "Ana" and its variations for mother, and we never use Mama.

Though there are exceptions, "ma" and "ba"/"pa" are generally regarded as the easiest pair to make ("a" being the simplest vowel, and labials being the simplest consonants). Thus, it's a common false cognate. It's an effect of anatomy. I've not studied Turkish, but I imagine "ana" is from birth.

In Chinese, how's it a loanword? There's another word for "mother", but "妈妈" (māma), AFAIK, is more common.

Ma Ma really is more common - nowadays, but the thing is, it is not original, it came from West. You can tell it by character's nature - "horse" + "woman", woman for being a mother, and horse as a phonetic (horse is Ma). Its totally artificial.

Fu Han??? You mean 父汗?? That's Mongolian!! Only used by princesses and princes during the Yuan dynasty (as far as I can tell from all the dramas about Ghengis Khan). We originally called mum and dad (at least for Han Chinese) 娘 and 爹 respectively. As for the Qings, they called their dad 阿瑪 (forgot which character they used for the second one. Pronounced Ama) and mum 額娘 (again, dunno which character they used for the first one. Read as Erniang) 媽 and 爸 is post-1900 only.
