Besides the moral questions about advertising’s practice supporting market system and the idea of continuous consumption, how can advertising, always celebrating its own superb creativeness, appropriate other peoples ideas just like that, as like there would be no issue about it, as like they would have the right to do that, as like they would be the ones creating the ideas?
This was made in 1987 and inspired Honda advert, with out this the Honda advert wouldn't exist. Love Fishli and Weiss, remember an exhibition at the Tate in 2006 or 2007, hundreds of little sculptures, my favorit, 'Mick Jagger and Brian Jones walking home satisfied after writing I can’t get no satisfaction‘. Genius!
watch the whole thing, it's 30 minutes long. you can find all 3 parts on youtube titled The Way Things Go (1/3) (2/3) and (3/3). Trust me, it is well worth your time to watch the whole thing.
@xInvertPBx Rube Goldberg is a machine that uses one applied force and by a series of chain reactions does a simple task. like crack an egg or something like that not shoot a racecar
@FilledCircle that box may have been a fireplace that they wanted to light. or lighting the rocket may have been the simple task. or if you want to be really mundane about it just add a candle to the end =P
@ursorr: Actually there are a couple. But they were while zoomed in at fire. Probably so they wouldn't have to record the fire burning for a few minutes.
@vincewhitney the edits are actually because this was filmed using film. I'm pretty sure, I was taught, and have never heard otherwise, that this was one continuous run.
@moosker07 Its technically not a Rube Goldberg machine unless the machine Performs some kind of menial task as a result, like light a cigarette or pour some orange juice or squirt some toothpaste on your toothbrush.
OMG. I watched like the first 20 min., and then it was so good so I think that shall explain how I ended up here.

To the person below who reckon the advert is 'so much better'...Err, Fischli and Weiss did it first and were ripped off!
