I too have seen people block the aisles by standing smack in the middle. I didn't even know people still use checks, here in england most places don't accept checks anymore. I too prefer using the self checkouts. As for the parking lot issue, most stores here have a car park attendant that goes round making sure carts are where they should be. Beside here you need to put a coin in the cart to get one, so you need to return the cart to a bay to get ya coin back.
It is my experience that there are many companies that do shopping cart maintenance but many, perhaps most, stores do not choose to avail themselves of this service. The Walmarts in this area apparently do not take advantage of this service because virtually every cart in their "fleet" is real piece of junk. I think the more upscale stores such as Shaws maintain their carts because they care about the customers.

The most annoying thing happened to me (just recently) at the grocery is when I was shopping for Thanksgiving. This grocery is not as big as the Wally World where aisles are roomy, it's just a local grocery. There are these two ladies (w/ their big carts) chatting beside the turkey fridge. They're really blocking the fridge and a lot of shoppers (including me) are looking, inspecting, buying turkey. So annoying that they're still there after an hour. I'm done w/ shopping but they're still there.
Yeah, something i get annoyed by also, poeple standing in a ile blocking the way, something i get a GTFO moment of, jeez and still standing there five minutes later, makes me wanna buy some brandnew workboots and test them, but instead of that, i'll alwa...most of the time i'll just ask them to move...
And those carts...some one seen The Terminal? I think thats the way to secure them =)
They should have some sort of holographic display on the shopping cart that shows a schematic of the entire store so you won't have people all confused as to where particular items are located, that would alleviate the zombie traffic jam.
The exact location, current price and description of the item should be incorporated into this display also.
Forget about cart wheel maintenance, i'm thinking self propelled hover carts for the patron's convenience, although for now, at least lube the wheels

Sounds like you've either worked in a grocery store before or you're just truly a courteous customer. Working in one is what made me have even more respect for employees. The customer is usually always wrong, but you're right.

I hate grocery shopping so much (and the price for grocerys) That I revised a way to stay out of them as much as possible)
I buy my milk & soda at the gas station and take out pizza sandwiches & dinners from restaurants.
Cleaning products, breakfast box foods & snacks I stock up on once max twice a month at the store.
No more hassle. :)
For a family of 3 it works & got to the point that going to the grocery store every day was boring!
