@littlesdchick Hi Um dont listen to these stupid assholes cause obviously those people didnt listen to u when u told us not to post any rude comments. So dont worry about them honey! Express urself who cares what everybody eles thinks! So live ur dreams and maybe someday you can become a fabulous Clarinetist! :)
thank you for your videos they are very helpful for me I finally got a decent sound of the clarinet. it's still really hard to maintain a constant sound though. it almost feel like it's too hard, I blow really hard to do the clear sound, it almost feels like it should be easier, any tips. if seems that the problem is the way i position my lips around the mouth piece.
i just started playing in my junior high band. I already play the flute, but i decided to give the clarinet a try. I need to get everything down, lie the notes, scales, and everything else. it needs to all be learned by the time school starts, along with a song that was writen for a symphonic clarinet player
canE yoiu shoe us how to playe trhe song "yankle doocle dandle"" poease!!?!! i nEED too leanr for my moosic clase and my tyeacher teache it but he talks to fats!!11
um i am just starting with this musical desire an have no clue on how 2 read music neither do i have the knowlege of knowing keys and all that i need really bad to have a full through turitorial
@ChewyChocs i know your comment is kinda old but a way you could possibly get your reed to be a little easier to play on would be to "condition" your reed. i highly recommend watching a video called getting the most from your reeds from kathywilliams76
i hope this helps :)
(no i do not play the clarinet but i am getting one soon and i had some one who does play the clarinet try this on their reeds and they said works really well just thought i should give you a heads up)
Hello! I've been playing for about 2 years and I just switched to a new 3.5 Vandoren reed. Do you have any idea how to season it? I've been blowing low notes as loud as I can and my teacher told me to soak the reed a little in water. It still doesn't work! Its really hard to blow on! Would appreciate if you could help! thanks!
@ChewyChocs It's actually interesting that you said that. I've been using Mitchell Lurie for a really long time, and I decided to get 3.5 Vandorens around a year ago. I could hardly make a sound out of them- 90% was air. Two days ago I decided to try again. They're working perfectly fine. I think you just have to keep working with them..either that or practice on some other reeds for a little while until you get used to the stiffness. Good luck!
@littlesdchick Of course, 3.5 reeds sound much better. However, the best thing to do is, obviously, getting extremely good with 2.5 reeds before switching. 2 years is, in my opinion, not enough to be ready to switch to 3.5 reeds. Many professionals play clarinet with 2.5 reeds and lower to become better because it helps them pushing the sound with their diaphragm.
@ChewyChocs Ok, I have another answer to your question. I have been playing clarinet for 4 years now and I switched to a 3.5 Vandoren reed just last year from a 2.5 Rico. Talk about a hard switch. It's taken a while but you need to make sure your reed is nice and moist and keep your corners tight but don't bite down on the reed too hard. :D The stiffness is really an issue for about a month but it's ok. I still get that airy sound every once in a while but it's ok. Try your best! :D
@ChewyChocs This is probably a little late, but if you're having problems getting the reed to "work" it's probably because the reed is too stiff. Try a 3 or 3 and a half. Most players who are in the 2 years range will work best with a 2.5. Hope that's helpful.
10/16/2010...Hi, I just picked my first lesson today from a good old fellow who was a teacher for over 29 years here in Tampa Bay and I'm very interested on following up also on your very helpful tutorials...pls. continue them so I, like others can benefit out of them and grow in knowledge....thank's for your effort and your perseverance...
May I ask what is the size of your rid? I just started clarinet and I,m not sure what size I should go for. I,m around 14 years old and I was told by my local shop manager that they are 4 types
@MrYamable I use a Mitchell Lurie 3.5, but I've also been playing for 5 years..when I started I used Rico 1.5 I think. Most people will say that Rico is not a good brand, but starting out it's fine :)
@MrYamable i also play clarinet and our band teacher person told us to get vandoren reeds strength 3 if your a beginer witch i think you are cause you don't know how to spell reed oh and i play on a debut mouthpiece and on a selmer clarinet.
@lettuce2017 The best you should go with is a 2 Rico reed and build up to a Vandoren because a Rico 3 is like a Vandoren 2. If you haven't already worked this out, I hope this helps, :D
can you play the halloween song from then night before christmas? im a beginner clarinetist and that is my favorite song i would like to play it in my middle school band sometime so maybe you could also put the notes on the screen?
Hi I have just come back from Russia with my wife who's a Russian lady, as you know they are very big on culture so I have decided to try and learn the Carinet as I have always wanted to play a musical instrument. My first problem of many is Embouchure I find it difficult to get a good tone, Can you help please.
@Miagirl33 Well, if you can't get a sound out with a three, I'd suggest not moving up to a new reed. Either stay with one that you can get a sound out of or switch to another, softer brand. I play on Mitchell Lurie.
Can you please tell me or make a video on how to get a better tone. I have been playing for a year on a buffet b12 on 3 inch reeds, my tone is pretty good on 2 and a half but 3, I might as well have stepped on a cats tail.
@Miagirl33 Some reeds are too hard or soft for your instrument. Sometimes band directors seem as if a higher reed is a better reed- it's not. Whatever you feel comfortable with and sound good with, that's the right reed for you. What kind are you using? Vandoren?
@MsMckenna2000 There's not much more to teach besides notes which you can find on a fingering chart online. If there's something specific, please tell me. :D Thanks.
Thank-you so much for posting these videos! Okay so this year we're going to learn how to play the clarinet, and I'm trying to kinda learn ahead of everyone else so I can get kind of a head start. :)
@fizzywizzy312 There are some up already! Go check them out...and if you already have, sorry about the lack of more. I will try and get some up as soon as possible.
@littlesdchick I'm joining band this year, so I'm EXTREMELY new. (I'm trying to get a head start before everyone else over the summer...) And thanks for posting these videos!! :)
My cousin wants to know ho to play and when she blew into it, there was no sound, i told her to keep trying but there was still no sound. What does she do now???
@graces1616 Clarinet takes a lot of air compared to some instruments....make sure she's blowing hot air like fogging up a window, covering all the holes completely, and not pressing any additional keys than the keys she needs for the note...did she just try an open G (no fingers down)?
she also tried the other notes like f; e; d; c; low g and all but she just gives up... :(
Well... i guess the clarinet isn't for her... mayby she's good at the trumpet... i just don't know... but she really does great at the piano... now she just wants to play a blowing instrument... tomorrow she's going to try again. IF she can't then, she'll try the flute... just cross your fingers and hope she does great tomorrow!!!!
@kittychik139 Practice, practice, practice. Maybe wet your reed more? This question is answered more in detail on my page so just click my name and look at my description
I know what you mean Sarah! I went from a size 3 reed to a size 4 and it took a lot of air to make a sound. But after a week it was just as easy to play.
Well... I have a question. I'm definately NOT A BEGINNER! But still, why is it that when you get a bigger sized reed, that it's like learning to play clarinet all over again? I moved up a size and I can't play as fluently anymore!
@13SarahJayne Sorry I replied late, but it just takes more air especially depending on your mouthpiece. The reed is harder and more rigid. Just remember that you don't have to move up reeds if one reed sounds better than another. This is a mistake I made because of what my band director said once and what other people mistake as well. They think they have to continue moving up if that makes sense. You should get used to the reed after awhile! Hope this helps.
@13SarahJayne its because the reed strength is a lot harder and the reed isnt balanced so it has a different response and your embouchure is used to the reed size you were playing on...try learning to balance reeds or find someone who does to help with its tone and response and go to youtubecom/billyboy647 and his videos are pretty good and informative
@SparkMan527 Just practice, practice, practice!! I'm sure you'll get it. Try playing some scales and seeing which intervals are hard for you, meaning which notes are hard to go from one to the other with. The high notes are really hard at first. Make sure your mouth is tight on the sides and try and keep your fingers from moving! Try curling them over the holes so that the tips of your fingers cover the holes. Good luck!
@SparkMan527 I can play up to a high C. Then it starts to get off pitch. It takes a lot of practice, and a very developed ombouchure (not sure if i spelled that right, spellings not my thing)
So .... I was looking at a clarinet scale fingering chart ... and unless I'm missing something, I have looked at all of the alternate fingerings ... and have come to realize the key you use to play "A", above middle "C", 2nd Space in the treble clef, is only used for "A" and "Bb". Do you realize no other note in the chormatic range for the clarinet uses that one, single key???? I find that ODD... but easy to identify "A" and "Bb"... :)
I bought a Clarinet yesterday, Impulsive buy, I know absolutely nothing, your lessons would be great, I've put it together but not sure if its lined up correctly. lesson 101 assembling a clarinet would be a good start for me. thanx
@lancehamblen Hey, this is a late reply, but I definitely need to make a tutorial soon. Pretty much the only thing left to teach is note fingerings, so anything specific you're interested in?
hey im playin clerinet and thans so much for makin these vids i looked all over cause im in 6 grade enter the 3 week but i was playin french horn at first and in the 3 week i came in but i wasent suppose to so m just tryin cacth up on wat i missed and if you know holy night could you teach on youtube beforew chritmas angain thans
You are just wonderful. Can you make a tutorial with all 8 notes on a scale and teach one song (short one with all the notes) on a note to note basis. Thanks.
Thanks for the help. How about numbering the tutorials so we know what sequence to view them in. Numbers up front would be great so they don't get truncated off on our ytube display lists. Cheers
I can make the embouchure make kind of the right sound when I play it on its own, but when I attach the rest, I basically get the same pitch and/or squeaks. How do I fix that?
Make sure your reed is wet and your fingers are covering the holes completely. A way you can test this is squeeze your fingers to the clarinet, then look. The imprints should be toward the middle of your fingers not cut off or on the sides. Hope this helps!
Yup, my fingers seem to cover the holes right. But I can't even get the right sound out of the open hole position either... I've played the recorder, and it sounds kind of like when you overblow the notes. It just squeaks horridly. But then again, I've only been trying for a couple of days now... but it's still frustrating.

It takes a lot of practice, and a very developed ombouchure (not sure if i spelled that right, spellings not my thing)

hi!
I am sorta a beginner but still have been playing for a few terms.
I still always manage to squeak and havent really established a good embochure. Any ideas?

explodingcheese908 2 years ago

Yes, that's true! Nice observation- it is kind of odd....

You are just wonderful. Can you make a tutorial with all 8 notes on a scale and teach one song (short one with all the notes) on a note to note basis. Thanks.
dfdannyfeng 2 years ago
I made a video of the Bb scale if you're interested. I'll try and find a song. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for the help. How about numbering the tutorials so we know what sequence to view them in. Numbers up front would be great so they don't get truncated off on our ytube display lists. Cheers

Thanks for the comment! I'll try and do something with the numbers!

I can make the embouchure make kind of the right sound when I play it on its own, but when I attach the rest, I basically get the same pitch and/or squeaks. How do I fix that?
iamthewalr 2 years ago
Make sure your reed is wet and your fingers are covering the holes completely. A way you can test this is squeeze your fingers to the clarinet, then look. The imprints should be toward the middle of your fingers not cut off or on the sides. Hope this helps!
littlesdchick 2 years ago
Yup, my fingers seem to cover the holes right. But I can't even get the right sound out of the open hole position either... I've played the recorder, and it sounds kind of like when you overblow the notes. It just squeaks horridly. But then again, I've only been trying for a couple of days now... but it's still frustrating.
iamthewalr 2 years ago
Okay try and adjust your mouth. Put it farther onto the mouthpiece or farther off.
littlesdchick 2 years ago
No problem! Glad you found a solution!!
