Only the ammo man will step back immediately. The Gunner will continue to hold the mortar, as he is doing. The A-Gunner will kick down on the barrel thrice, if it fires, they swab/relay the gun. If it doesn't, The gunner and AG move back 50 meters with the rest of the crew and wait for one minute. After 1 min. the gunner moves up and checks the cannon for heat. If the barrel is not cool enough to handle, the gunner will continue to wait for it to cool.
You are wrong , i spent 7 Yrs in a Mortar Platoon , and as soon as that roound does not go off , you shake the buffer carriage and keeps heads below the muzzle , i mean why would you kick down on the barrel? your talking shit , secondly you wait for 2 mins or till the barrel is hand cool , WHICH EVER TAKES LONGEST
Nope i used the 81mm mortar which the US and countless other countries have bought , i only stopped doing mortaring last year but trust me mate the misfire drills you described are wrong.
Why would the Marine Corps put out a safety manual with wrong info then? That's where I got it from, and I didn't put each step, that would be dozens of comment boxes = Pain in the ass.
I am British , Your an American , thats the difference , British are more into the drills that we do but if what said is from the USMC manual , damn they need to do there research better
ahh, i see. how does it know how far it is from the barrel? GPS? I thought they were on a timer and then a pressure fuse. I know nothing about this, so thanks for the info!
They have velocity checks inside them that mesaure the feet per second against the muzzle velocity , when its at a certain velocity then its at the arming distance , so a 81 mm in the video has a muzzle velocity of 225 m/s and arms itself between 56 and 77m so when the required speed is made it knows its travelled that distance.
The fuze's on impact have two ways of detonating , either SQ (super quick) basically blows up on impact or D ( delayed) that detonates 0.05 seconds after hitting ground , ideal for dug in troops and troops under wooded areas
Sorry but thats the way it works on a hangfire if it doesnt hit the bottom. Although clearly you hear it hit on the drop in wich case for our 60's we would go to trigger fire. If your tubes are blowing up from kicking them i'd say ya have a different problem to worry about.
He may attempt to cool the cannon by splashing water on it. If time permits he will wait. The gunner attempts to remove the firing pin, using the firing pin wrench, after the sight unit is removed and stowed. After several steps of securing the gun, the AG unlocks the breech plug, they all get into their assigned positions and the gunner will make eye contact and ask if his team is ready, when they all say ready, they will lift the gun horizontal, while running cadence to assure no fuck-ups.
The AG will slide the fleshy portion of his thumb over the top of the muzzle to catch the round. The ammo man lifts the breech end slowly, and listens for the sound of the round sliding out of the barrel. When any member of the team hears the sound of the round sliding out they will sound off Sliding" and will stop lifting. When the round stops against his hand, he will remove it from the barrel, sound off I have the round and immediately attempt to replace the safety wire in the round.
if the safety wire wont go in, they will place the round in a misfire pit and call EOD.The Ammo man will lift the gun vertical and shake the barrel to dislodge any dirt or unburned increments from the cannon. He then replaces the breech plug and safeties the firing pin. The ammo man will take the dead round and inspect it to try to find the cause of the misfire.
I don't know why they stopped the video. there are easy rules (codified in swiss army, can't tell you) in this case that you have to follow by the 8.1 cm.
But not so important, to detonate a 8.1 cm grenada has to turn around his axis aprox. 3000 times before detonation, so there is no danger. I had a case like that, and after see that the grenade don't start we have to denotante with C6
when i was in you would wait like 5 minutes (unless in combat) then move the cannon to the lower saddle (the 60mm has upper and lower saddles for the bi-pod unlike the 81mm) and attempt the trigger fire it using you belt if over charge 1 so you wouldnt break you hand. There is more the that is all clearing the round from the chamber.
what happened next? I remember having to wait half an hour with a no-fire 66 on my shoulder with half the flight sitting watching me. great fun. did you have to clear out with your mortar?
I think if there was a possibility for the mortar blowing up, it would have done so right away before you could even shout misfire.
Still though, no harm in making some distance...

The mortar is supposed to go off once it hits the bottom. Since it didn't, it became a misfire and a danger

why does the round not explode in the barrel?
fipfapfallywap 1 year ago
Because the round only arms itself when its a certain distance away from the barrel after firing

impact fuse on the "nose"... and unless the barrel is red hot, it's unlikely to cook of either
