I really like your idea; it's an elegant way to solve the problem of "too many tabs!". Although it would be a little clumsy for 2-5 tabs, I think you have a serious chance of getting some attention if you add some more to the idea, such as: integrating bookmarks into the awesomebar, or having chrome-like new tab previews. Thanks a lot!

Right, for 2-5 tabs it's sub optimal, but users for whom 2-5 is typical don't really have tabbing problems anyway.

I probably didn't make it clear, but the text area that pops up is really the same awesome bar as it currently exists: if you start typing, you'll see favorite and history items as well as any open tabs that match the query. In a query, though, you'd always want 2-3 favorite items to come before any open items unless the open item is itself one of those 2-3 favorites.
