In Feudal times(?) Tanuki hide was used to thin out gold, so the Tanuki became associated with Metalworking.

The tanuki is a type of animal found in japan- in mythology it is able to change shape, as seen in Super Mario 3's "Tanuki Suit" which allowed Mario to change into a statue. Biologically the tanuki is related to dogs, rather than racoons. The anime you remember was likely "Pom Poko," aka "Heisei Tanuki Gassen Ponpoko"
