  • Oh John, I miss NYC as well, after spending last semester there. I understand feeling lonely away from the city. But, I'm trying to write. I just keep getting discouraged with my storylines and trying to start anew..

  • JOHN, YOU SHOULD NAME YOUR BOOK PAPER TOWNS!!!

  • It is one heck of a book.

  • Dear John,

Hi.I am from the future. You will write a fourth book called "The Fault In Our Stars".You will sign all of the first 150,000 copies of this book.

    You did it for us.

    Thank you John

    DFTBA

    -A nerdfighter:)

  • This was uploaded on my birthday. :D

  • I cleaned my room earlier. And as I sat here watching this, I thought, "Aw man, if only I had left Paper Towns where it was earlier. Then I could read along." (Because obviously I can't just get up and grab it.) Turns out, however, I didn't put it back on the shelf. It's still on my nightstand. Huzzah!

  • Paper Towns :) my favorite book ever. Gosh, thank you John Green! Thank you for writing your books! Can't wait for TFIOS! Best wishes!

  • PAPER TOWNS!!!!!!! I LOVE THAT BOOK I GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS!!!!!

  • dear past john,

paper towns, in my opinion, was your second best book...your first best was looking for alaska. i hope that in the future, you can do better. i love your books, write on!

    me

p.s. i think you should name one of your books "the fault in our stars" just sayin.

  • "If you consider all the unlikely things together, at least one of them will probably happen." Never thought of it like that before... now I'm totally freaked out.

  • "My miracle was Margot."

AWWWWWW!!!! now i have to read this book. that sounds so sweet.

  • "That's actually one of the main ways writing is different from ballet dancing."

  • @KeepWindowsOpen

which, for the record, is true.

  • And it was, it was one heck of a book

  • vlogbrothers are sooooo AWESOME!!

  • Oh my god, that was Scott Westerfeld? I love his books! Ohmygod!!!

  • You have intrigued me!!! I want to read your book........

  • @BandNLong you should :D

  • @BandNLong you should :D

  • @BandNLong you should, all his books are good :D go forth and read! :D

  • Is he narrating books yet? No? ...He should.

  • @TheLuella14 It would! It would be supermegafoxyawesomehot if it was! :D

  • @TheLuella14 Hermione Can't Draw Parody Or Strange Coincident? o.O

  • Looking for Alaska, in my pants. TROLOLOLOLOL.

  • I know what the book is about.

Or at least I could easily find out.

I'm still on looking for Alaska.

  • John's got no friends, John's got no friends, John has no friends, it's raining

  • WOAH different Paper Towns intro! It's so interesting to hear how different it is. If only my friend hadn't disappeared with my book and refused to ever give it back.

  • Dear past John,

I'm am Taylor from 2011 and you should know your book is named Paper Towns and it will be amazing.

  • It was one heck of a book

  • Yaay, my birthday XD

  • ha ha, as I am watching this I am writing a book review for Scott Westerfeld's book 'Leviathan' (one of my favorite books of all time) for my new book-and-fanfiction review website. I love un-planned coincidences.

  • I want him to read books to me XD He has a great reading voice.

  • Oh trust me John, it will be one hell of a book ;)

  • It was his best song ever!

  • We're doing the same thing! Only I highly doubt I'm writing as well as you, currently.

  • As soon as he started reading the prologue I ran to get the actual book so I could read the final product along with his draft. ^_^

  • I love Paper Towns.

  • Paper Towns is my favorite book ever. :)

  • John- Something something something Scott Westerfeld Me: =0 I love his books!

  • As John was reading the prologue to Paper Towns, I was reading along with it in the actual book. I felt like I had time traveled or something. Needless to say, it was a cool feeling.

  • Wow...I just watched a heck of a lot of your videos, and I've come to a conclusion. I have to read your books. You are friends with some of my favourite authors and have very funny vlogs. You should feel especially accomplished because I think I've only read about ten books in my life which were not fantasy. And most of them sucked. Seriously, I know Animal Farm was just an analogy for communism, opression, and stuffs....but I still loathe it to my very core....

  • @UsagiChan95 You have to read them! Well, yeah, I've only just finished An Abundance of Katherines (In my pants) yesterday, but it was totally awesome. And I just started Paper Towns, which I can tell is going to be equally awesome. John is an amazing writer, so yeah, you HAVE to read them. xD

  • It's so fun to go back and hear John Green reading (now) old drafts of paper towns. I remember these passages and it's interesting to noticed how they've changed...

  • I was so happy when I rewatched this today and heard John read the prologue of Paper Towns, because I was like, "THE WORD CANAL IS NOT IN THE FINAL PRINT! I HAVE JUST WITNESSED EVIDENCE OF EDITING FROM A REAL AUTHOR IN THE REAL WORLD!" And then I realized that I only know that from having memorized my favorite parts of Paper Towns and got even happier. xD

  • AHHHHH! when you were reading that i was laughing the whole time :D i love paper towns! little Margo and Q are perfect together <3

  • That prologue was freaking amazing! *Rushes off to buy all of John Green's books*

  • 1000 likes.

    I have to ruin this.

  • A girl read that prologue for a prose at our sectionals Speech Meet.

    She didn't do it justice. : \

  • PAPERTOWNS! only book of john's I have read... so far

  • @spidermanandsnape read Looking For Alaska right now. It's. So. GREAT.!

  • Ahhhh! Paper Towns!(: That's my favorite book ever!

  • It's fairly unlikely that the average American teenager will ever place second in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

    I did.

Does that mean the rest of my life is going to be boring because I've already had my 'miracle'?

  • I love that you are friends with Scott Westerfeld so much.

Along with you and a few others, he is probably one of my favorite writers EVER. Maybe THE favorite, sorry John lol XD

  • I am a dancer and I agree with your comment about ballet vs. writing. :]

  • Paper towns :) One of my top favourite prologues. When I'm writing I can concentrate for a long time but it's just me getting myself to do stuff that's the hard part. Gah! Youtube really doesn't help my progress. Neither does my spinny chair for that matter. OK, OK, enough spinning and youtube (ing?) I will work.

  • haha it's funny where paper towns was changed

  • Who else was reading along with John Green at the beginning? :D

  • Paper Towns win!

  • Paper Towns. <3 Just finished it a few days ago. I can't get enough of John and Hank.

  • Now I want a copy of your book! How can I get one in Ireland, do you sell them here?

  • I'm reading Will Grayson, Will Grayson right now :333 and next on my list is Looking for Alaska!

  • i still chuckle every time i hear him say "in my pants"

  • what book is this prologue from

  • @pk12234 Paper Towns.

  • I feel like a time traveler because I know what this book is about already, but they didn't then. <3

  • aahhh i love paper towns :)

  • fabulous video ..thanks for this.

  • AHHH i just watched this but i absolutely LOVE paper towns

  • It was a heck of a book. it was my favorite Harry Potter.

  • I never thought about this before now but you must have horrid carpal tunnel.

  • @tylerchambers0 I used to do the laptop on a pillow thing, until my laptop overheated, it's super slow now. Good advice there haha

  • I just realized that you're the John Green of Looking For Alaska fame...

That's crazy. Wow. I'm a big fan, man.

  • As soon as I saw the laptop on a pillow i went kind of nuts. That's blocking airflow man whattr you doing???

  • @tylerchambers0 Constant heat near the reproductive area is bad for... it. Let's just say there might not be a baby in the family if he didn't have that pillow.

  • once you started reading the prologue I picked up my copy of Paper Towns and compared while you read

  • Hello John from 3 years ago :)

  • funny

  • PAPER TOWNS. Wait, I'm pretty sure you editted a lot of that awesomeness out. Now I'm going to have to get it from the library and check...

  • Paper Towns! I just finished that book! It made my Top 5 list!

  • PAPER TOWNS!! *cough cough* yes i am a papertowns fan girl

  • It's awesome that "in my pants" never gets old.

  • Papertowns being read by John is epic.

  • It's interesting to hear the Prologue before it was edited. :D

  • John Green... I would pay so much money to just hear your voice read your books. NOT kidding.

  • I will have to do a video like this, even though writing is my "weekend job" since my day job is Going To Highschool.

  • Haha, agreed.

  • FYI - I would put a big hard book under your laptop. Putting a laptop on pillows, carpets, or cushions vacuums up all the dander, dust, etc. up into the cpu fan. Good writing!

  • my name is justine!!!!!! BOOYA

    nerdfighters kick butt!!!!!!!

  • Aw.... I will write with you John.

  • The title of this particular video is what the title of my biography (which will probably never exist) will be called....

  • Well John's wonderful chair and lap-thingy, added to the 30 minute warm up, and 7 hours of typing, evidently resulted in the best books I've ever read in my life [besides Harry Potter.] And I'm seriously not just saying that to brown-nose John.

I'm certain that many people would agree with me on that.

    =]

  • PROPS TO ALL WRITERS! I hope you succeed!

  • i have those socks!

  • when he said "im lonley lonley lonley" i actually thught ity was an echo until i saw his mouth move, then i was disappointed

  • I just realized how I love all of these people.

Yet I hate most of the people I meet in real life.

Haha, I'm not evil, or insane, or "emo".

But I just get really tired of all these decepticons around me.

    :]

    nerdfighters ftw.

  • So cool to see the development of the prologue from here to September (I think) to the final version!

  • i just realized it says communcation and not communication

  • i just realized that too!

  • Can you imagine people going to a writing recital the way they do ballet or music?

  • ballet if hes reading while doing his happy dance and music if he sings the book

  • it's interesting to hear how the prologue developed... I mean, it didn't change very much, but I like all the changes you made.

Very glad I got the actual book.

  • Look, it's a Paper Towns prologue! *sigh*

  • Hey, it's Staircase! Hi Staircase, it's been awhile!

  • omg did you say staircase?!!?!?!

  • is that the prolouge to paper towns?

  • yep I watched this and then compared it with Paper Towns its the prologue of paper towns

  • dftba

  • amazing. :)

  • Ugh I promised myself i wouldnt get papertowns till i catched up on all of your vids its killing me! hope you get some wrting friends

  • I love hearing the rudimentary prologue and hearing how much it had changed.

  • Yeah it's exicting how many Papertowns related things you discover in the past

  • The puff level is my favorite.

We always know how you're feeling!

  • Comment 139:

    Note to self--get Paper Towns.

  • SLIGHT PUFF LEVEL INCREASE...

  • he is wearing two different socks... i must point that out

  • The song Hank did was really awesome to watch. Its weird doing things by yourself because you have the energy. The writing is very difficult for me to do which I have to give it another try.

  • ily john

  • "That's actually one of the main ways that writing is different from ballet dancing."

    Haha, so true.

I'm like a painter when I write. I spend a lot of time not writing, but just staring at it like a painter stares at whatever they're painting. I suppose that's not a good thing, considering I don't finish many of my stories, unlike the painters.

  • @BogapeJane Leonardo da Vinci never finished anything ;-; He also worked on the Mona Lisa for 16 years until he died.

  • @BogapeJane Hey now, Mona Lisa was never actually finished. That's right, you're the Leonardo in this.

  • omg paper towns comes out the day after my b day woot

  • write faster, I want that book!

  • hey you posted this on my birthday YIPPIEEEE

  • So I've only read Looking for Alaska, and the only bookstore in my state is Border's and they don't have An Abundance of Katherines OR Paper Towns. And you reading the prolouge gave me chills.

    I am rather short.

    The snow was rather high.

  • you would know how if you had finished the book. and don't post spoilers! that's not cool.

  • Everyone has been saying they want to check out John's work.

I definitely ordered a book from ebay.

Excited for it to get here.

  • AAAAAAHHHHHH! I have to read that book! It's soooo deep...

  • I think I'm gonna have to check out some John Green books now.

  • i frequently think that!

the whole thing about how there are so many unlikely things that could happen to you that, collectively, one of them has to happen.

    WEIRD, MAN!

  • Ah, the lonely writer. He seems so sad when he has no friends.

    Prologue of awesome!

  • So, based on your prologue, I really would like to read the book. I've never thought of a prologue like that before...generally I have already bought the book and just start reading at the prologue, but this was like a movie preview of the book...and I'm hooked. Get me some popcorn and a really expensive coke. I'm in!

  • I never knew writing was different than ballet dancing...I LEARNED SOMETHING TODAY! YESSS! xD

  • you have contracted terminal ear canal cancer!

    ohhh ear infections. :)
