I only bought this movie cus of Liam Neeson... But oh God, what a good movie, even if he wouldn't play in it! The music is great, but what else could u expect of such a composer!
Vasily Arkhipov, played by Liam Neeson in this movie, saved the world twice...Besides in the events of July 1961 with the submarine reactor, but also again a year later in 1962 when a Soviet nuclear armed Foxtrot class sub was under attack by U.S destroyers. Arkipov countermanded Captain Valentin Savitsky, who thought war had already started, from launching the nuclear warheads.
Yet the Western hypocrites never gave him Nobel Peace Prize.
@wnxsilence I am not trying to question you, but can you support your claim? I find what you said interesting but I would like to see the source document that says that. Can you provide it?
@aaronmb83 I don't have access to the now declassified internal documents of that era to cite, but if you research Vasily Arkipov in context of the K19 incident and the Cuban missile crisis I think you can find what you're looking for.
It is amazing that a man can save the world twice and not receive the "Noble Prize." By now that award is discredited in my opinion...
Could anyone tell me the name of the classical music that the K-19 captain (Harrison Ford) was listening to, right before the reactor's coolant line burst?
K-19 is really great film. I don't understand why critics were so ruthless to this film - nice storyline (based on true events), great acting. Liam Neeson, Harrison Ford, Peter Sarsgaard and many others did a great job.
those guys who died in K19 were indeed great men. they actually saved the world, i know those reactors, if they would go off in the ocean, tha would cause a great damage on the earth. besides, probable tsunami like waves in atlantic . the movei is one fo the greatest movies actually, i wonder why it didnt get any price.
First off I don't think you know those reactors as well as you think you do or you would know that they can't go supercritical enough to cause a nuclear explosion. Don't get me wrong; it wouldn't have been good if the aft reactor had melted down and dropped it's white hot fuel into the ocean. But even that would probably not have been so bad due to the fact that over the years the Soviet union actually disposed of fuel in the sea, and the only reason it was noticed is because someone talked.
this reactors COULD cause a thermo nuclear explosion, this is never tested and seen that, they surely dont cause such an explosion. if they did, then this´d be a very serious punch on the faces of world piece.
I have no desire to argue. So I did a little research just to make sure I'm not wrong. I'm sorry to say that a thermonuclear explosion is still out of the question due to the fact that even out of control the K-19's reactors could not have produced the necessary three hundred million kelvins necessary to start a thermonuclear reaction. Even if there was enough energy to light the fire you still need isotopes like deuterium and tritium. However, a pressure explosion wouldn't have been impossible.
@Natomon01 True, I remember when I was 4, my dad, soviet navy officer, used to take me to the ocean on his tanker, loaded with containers with nuclear waste. They dumped those containers into the Japanese sea. Once, a container wouldn't sink, so my dad's first officer took AK47 and sprayed it with bullets to let the air out.
Only now I understand how irresponsible that was. Imagine thousands of containers at the bottom of the ocean! No wander Japanese snow crab is so big.
Black HAwk Down wasn;t about some silly GIs playing silly wargames. It was real. And no matter if the war was stupid or not, they were still real human being like all of us. They had parents and kids too. So give them and the film some respect.
@paganviodio i completely agree with you. Those men really did saved the world because K-19 was near U.S. and if the reactor would of went off, the americans would of thought of that as an attack which would of started a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and United States.
Actually they didn't. The concept of the reactors exploding was a movie plot device for tension. In reality the reactor would simply have molten through the hull and sunk the sub. No explosion would have occurred, and the radioactive mass would have fallen all the way to the bottom of the ocean.
So there was no "World in the balance" equation, merely their own lives.
Doesn't change them being absolute heroes nonetheless.

Does the coup happened inside the movie was true? There was a mutiny or it was just a myth?
I think the crews of Kursk were also heros, especially they have done all they can to prevent another nuclear havoc...May they RIP
