Cyberspace in the Sprawl trilogy has got a lot to do with drugs, parallel dimensions (It's like a twiligh world merging, covering every parallel of the analog world) and also with superstition (the A.I.s are there artificial spirits of pure logic that take advance of the weaknesses of sensitive emotional humans by showing themselves as people want them to see them: loa, dead relatives... and also act like demons that offer benefits if you sell them your soul somehow).
