The Macbook Air is not a "piece of shit", it is an ultraportable laptop.
You people don't seem to get the fact that the Air is not meant to be your main computer. It is for traveling. And the Air is by no means a netbook. It is a fully-functional computer. Basically, it's for people who like doing things other than browsing the internet, but don't want to carry around a heavier laptop.
And it was an excellent move on the part of Intel. Intel is raking in revenues from Mac users now.
MANY people, including you, do not understand why the MacBook Air was made. Let me explain: There are those people in this world who do not care about performance in terms of firewire, the ethernet(outdated by WiFi) multiple usb ports, etc. All they would like is something that is small, lightweight, has internet, a decent screen and good looking and the MacBook Air provides all of those features. It wasnt made for performance geeks. You seem to forget there are other MacBooks out there.
That's why we have netbooks. Samll, thin, lightweight, and much cheaper. Apple probable thought "okay, small and basic seems pretty in, so lets make it... and jack the hell out of the price!"
how will it compare to a netbook performance? I returned my Asus Eee PC S101 today (1.6 atom - xp - 16gb solid state) ... it was pretty good for basic web surfing and its application launch time and performance for basic apps like MS word, powerpoint, excel was admirable for it's low spec (which probably result of the SSD). I just think xp is too last century stuff and I love my iMac compelling me to buy a refurbished macbook air hdd version. SSD is expensive making it a difficult to go for
don't worry the new macbook air that was released to day is so much better than this one. this model here is so freaking slow it makes me want to hurl. i used this model on virginia tech campus for about a month for just word processing and internet access and it was a piece of junk.
i love macs that is all i use but this macbook air is the worst thing to happen to the macworld.
The MAC Book air, it's the worst laptop i've ever used. Just like all things from mac (aside from the original iPhone) it is very easy to break. If it falls more then 4 feet, there goes $1800.
@DinoMartini ,lol i agree , how the fuck do u drop a fucking lap top, maybe if your careless, and really think your a rich bitch, and just be like OHH I CAN REPAIR MY GORGEOUS THIN SHIT AT FUTURE SHOP OR BEST BUY
YouTube is predominantly more ignorant (with emphasis on the "RANT") than intelligent. And the latest and greatest Macbook Air debate is no exception.
The Macbook Air (as advertised) works well. Very light, and very handy. I've had mine for months now and still haven't missed an optical drive (Remote Disc sucka') . . . for what? Movies? That's like complaining about no Mobile TV on an iPhone. Seriously, who watches TV on a phone? And actually NEEDS it? Exactly!
i would rather buy a useful computer thats thicker than a thin peice of junk that could probably get easily broken. plus 1 usb port??WTH? and oh it has no disk drive but for a couple hundred more you can buy an external one! YIPPIE! or even better you can plug it into your other computer and use that one! but isn't that the point of a laptop? to be free to move around with it?
aand you are? im pretty sure you dont know me and what i have, and no reason to be a fan boy over Personal Computer's which are tools not action figures. so go take your g.i.Joe fan talk somewhere else cause the big boys are talking.
the "air only" touch pad features such as rotate and swipe that he talked about are also available on the macbook pro, and maybe some other macbooks (but im not certain about that)
for the price, it should include everything a loaded HP or Sony etc includes.
Having an "ultr-thin" laptop is pointless and lame if you have to purchase and hook up all the normal features externally. It isnt exactly "ultra-portable" when it has tons of wires and items hanging off it. lol
if you want the things Apple left off like a DVD drive or any external things like plugging in a camera or mouse etc using more than 1 USB, you need an ugly USB hub, which means tons of ugly wires hanging off it.
And I gladly wouldn't. Anyways, buy a Macbook, then... it's just 1 inch and has USB ports and an optical drive... like every other laptop on the market.
Overpriced? The MacBook Air actually compares pretty good (price wise) to other thin laptops. I like Apple products, if you don't, I don't care. You don't know what your missing.
That's stupid. Is another 3/4 of an inch and a cd drive, and a bigger hard drive, and more structural integrity really going to be that much of a portability issue?
it's the weight that is the big problem when traveling. and actually, the macbook air is quite a bit more sturdy than full sized laptops, it's built like a small tank.
You are right about that. It is definitely built like a tank. I hadn't seen one up close when I posted earlier, and it is very sturdy. I think it's an excellent laptop for travelling, but the price is so ridiculous that I would rather deal with a slightly bulkier laptop.
the macbook air is good for traveling as long as you don't want to listen to any cds, watch any dvds, want to use a mouse and a flashdrive at the same time, want to hook it up to an ethernet connection or need to replace the battery when it dies on you
it's also good at being taken over by a hacker in literally two minutes
no, you put your movies on the HD, no reason to lug around DVDs anymore. a mouse can be used with Bluetooth, you don't need to plug it in. It connects up fine to ethernet if you have an old network, and the battery lasts about 5 years, then simply put a new one in, it's easy, just a couple screws on the bottom.
and no, it's impossible to hack into a Mac, nobody has done it in over 8 years, OSX is simply the most secure OS you can use today. nobody can hack it, unless given full password access.
bluetooth is a pretty shitty network, it helps to have an optical drive if you want to upload movies, why the fuck is the battery even set up like that in the first place, and macs aren't that hard to take over
they had a hacking contest and someone took over a new macbook in two minutes. mac os has pretty shitty security features
ah, you wouldn't use Bluetooth for a network, you use the MacBook's regular WiFi connection.
you can upload movies just as easy through the network, and the battery is fully user replaceable.
ah, WRONG, nobody took over a Mac in 2 minutes, you didn't bother to learn what actually happened.
After the first DAY, nobody could break into the Mac, so in Day 2 they gave hackers FULL Physical and Password access, and they BROKE IN! Wow, kinda like if you give keys to a burglar and he BREAKS IN Wow!
i have a friend in network security who says otherwise
pwn2own hacked the macbook air using a safari weakness and the guy who did it said he chose to attack a mac because he thought it would be easier than hacking vista or linux
he was also one of the first people to figure out how to remotely exploit an iphone
Nobody "hacked" the MacBook Air, they were given FULL access, then pointed Safari to their OWN website, then Safari was hacked.
OSX was never hacked, nor was the MacBook Air since the contest was FAILING, so they had to give the hackers FULL PHYSICAL ACCESS to the machine to make it work.
So it remains the Mac is the most secure, commonly use OS sold today. NOBODY has ever been able to hack it. NOBODY.
so basically what you're saying is that you can hack a mac in under two minutes while it runs mac osx using a weakness in the software that apple put on it?
damn. that's some cutting edge security features right there
NOBODY has ever hacked into a Mac running OSX, NOBODY. What you are repeating is 100% incorrect. The contest didn't have a winner on the first day so they allowed contestants FULL Physical and Password access to all machines, the best price was a MacBook Air, so all efforts were focused on the Mac, they couldn't hack the OS, but they did with FULL access point the Safari browser to their OWN website.
Not much of a hack! Nor did it show any security issue with OSX. Learn what actually happened.
no, it became MUCH more lax because nobody could crack the mac without FULL access. kinda like giving burglars keys to a house, then they BREAK IN! Wow, AMAZING!
he choose the mac since he wanted the MacBook Air as the grand prize, and he had worked for many WEEKS to perfect his java code so he could sorta make it work with a browser, NOT the OS.
the result is NO MAC has EVER been cracked, it's the most secure OS on the planet for a REASON.
dude seriously get a fucking life. no one cares. and 500GB isnt a Tb its Half. everything is in 1000s idiot. so instead of being a jerk and telling everyone that theyre wrong because youre an apple fanboy why dont you get a life and stop sitting at your probably stupid mac posting comments on this dumb movie and do something with your life.
the use of thick anodized aluminum makes it nearly as hard as diamond, then couple that with the seashell design and it makes it nearly indestructible.
certainly, the toughest small laptop except for the tough book series perhaps.
also why it is so strong is all the old "weak" parts are gone, no hollow CD/DVD drive, very few hollow ports, few internal cables, bottom plate is carved out of a solid black of anodized aluminum, etc.
it's a small, rock solid tank is the best way to describe it.
wow fan boy give me some scientific reasoning as to why YOU think it's SOOO strong hmm? come on if you think you know so much give me the equation that explains it's strength, oh wait no you can't possibly know that now could you? of course not your a fan boy that knows what everyone else knows which is what apple tells you and thats it... im sorry fan boy, but you probably really don't own one yourself, or you do but let it sit there collecting dust. oh wow you are really testing that thing.
it has to do with the "anodizing" process and what happens to aluminum when this is done.
aluminum reacts differently than any other metal to this process and makes it "nearly as hard" as diamond, and that's what Apple uses in the MacBook Air. it's extremely strong, most durable laptop you can buy.
and yes, I'm typing this on my MacBook Air to educate you.
please use FACTS, it will help you to not look like a fool.
bauxite forms spontaneously btw. the thermodynamics of aluminum says that it should just sort of corrode away really fucking fast, but it gets that nice little oxidized layer on it
the only reason apple uses anodized aluminum is because it's a standard, and the only reason they're using aluminum is because it's cheap, light, and tricks stupid people into thinking their computer is worth $1,000+ even though it doesn't do anything
but it's nearly has hard as diamond, that's why they used it. the MacBook Air is EXTREMELY strong because Apple wanted the strongest, lightest materials.
Learn about metals... okay?
The MacBook Air is amazing, simply a marvel of our time... Get one and you'll see what everyone is talking about that actually owns one.
I never said that it was untrue. However I was just pointing out the fact that the MBP has this, so this review is a bit dated. I never said ANYTHING about there being no model with it. I assume they will eventually put that in the Macbook too, but for now they are without this feature.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
omfg - never heard such an anoying review - you cant barly understand what he is saying. Walt Mossberg is much better for reviewing products :o(......
Pay 700 dollars more for less functionality! Macbook Air! Seriously, who needs to have a laptop that thin? It's more of an aesthetic gimmick than a necessity. Macbook air would be great if it didn't cost 700 dollars more than a regular Macbook (which is more powerful and not much more thicker). It's ridiculous, it's a waste of money, it's insulting to consumers.
yah iv seen whats inside its not impressive. it honestly looks like a gameboy advance on the inside. Id rather shuv an AOL v1.0 disk up my ass than buy this. its less painfull
Worst computer ever. they say 80 gigs, thats for the 3000 dollar macbook air. no CD drive. Ability to crack it over your leg. but HEY it fits inside an envelope!
um no. actually you're wrong. 80 gigs is for the cheaper one. 64 solid state is for the more expensive. if you actually knew something about computers, you'd see that its actually pretty good for the amount of space they had to fit in there. i'd like to see you build a computer that thin, with the same or better specs than a mac book air.
yea, and its made out of aluminum and has a curved top and bottom, if you knew anything about engineering you would realize that the combination of the two makes for a very strong computer. idiot.
There are alot of people who want to go ultraportable, thats why the Asus EEE is so popular. They dont care that it doesnt have a optical drive, card slots etc.. they only thing the Air cant do that the EEE can is being available for $300-500

yeah, pretty incredible, now you know why the MacBook Air is so strong. It's a metallurgical miracle, so I'm glad to help you learn today.
macindrew 3 years ago
you have no idea what anodizing is do you?
bauxite forms spontaneously btw. the thermodynamics of aluminum says that it should just sort of corrode away really fucking fast, but it gets that nice little oxidized layer on it
the only reason apple uses anodized aluminum is because it's a standard, and the only reason they're using aluminum is because it's cheap, light, and tricks stupid people into thinking their computer is worth $1,000+ even though it doesn't do anything
ucihapokujin 3 years ago
but it's nearly has hard as diamond, that's why they used it. the MacBook Air is EXTREMELY strong because Apple wanted the strongest, lightest materials.
Learn about metals... okay?
The MacBook Air is amazing, simply a marvel of our time... Get one and you'll see what everyone is talking about that actually owns one.
macindrew 3 years ago
my god are you hovering on this page and just clicking refresh?
anyways, i know about metals. more than you do probably
ucihapokujin 3 years ago
then why didn't you know about anodizing aluminum? i caught you on that one for sure.
you need to learn more about a subject before you post, I'm a skilled fact checker, so straighten up or DON'T post to the web.
macindrew 3 years ago
you thought anodizing a metal was some new miracle process. they've been doing that to aluminum since the 50s if not earlier
since you're so into googling shit to sound smart maybe you should try doing a search for redox

The "Gestures" are no longer Macbook Air only. So this review is a bit dated.
Lockerhaxor 3 years ago
really can you get them fo macbook
MacGeekG5 3 years ago
I never said that it was untrue. However I was just pointing out the fact that the MBP has this, so this review is a bit dated. I never said ANYTHING about there being no model with it. I assume they will eventually put that in the Macbook too, but for now they are without this feature.
Lockerhaxor 3 years ago
So why did you reply to me saying that. That had nothing to do with what I said. WTF!

ProjectZro 4 years ago
I would buy the Air if it was like an option for the current MacBooks rather than a whole other system.

Feels kinda gimmicky. My MacBook has the same HD size, speed, etc, but is like two CM wider. It cost 800 dollars less last summer.
Now, if it folded in half so u could keep it in a fanny pack it would be winnering.
No CD-ROM drive? How exactly do I install stuff? I dont want to buy an external USB, those are slow and expensive and bulky.
iiiiiifggffggffgfgfg 4 years ago 2
you use remote disk to barrow a mac or pc drive and you can instal software via your network...
micsowsow 4 years ago
what if I dont have a network or another computer?
iiiiiifggffggffgfgfg 4 years ago
then the macbook air isnt for you it isnt ment to be your "main machine"

Worst computer ever. they say 80 gigs, thats for the 3000 dollar macbook air. no CD drive. Ability to crack it over your leg. but HEY it fits inside an envelope!
crazyjman0017 4 years ago
um no. actually you're wrong. 80 gigs is for the cheaper one. 64 solid state is for the more expensive. if you actually knew something about computers, you'd see that its actually pretty good for the amount of space they had to fit in there. i'd like to see you build a computer that thin, with the same or better specs than a mac book air.
Cappy1337 4 years ago
yea, and its made out of aluminum and has a curved top and bottom, if you knew anything about engineering you would realize that the combination of the two makes for a very strong computer. idiot.
benatbenland 4 years ago
for 80 gigs its 1799

There are alot of people who want to go ultraportable, thats why the Asus EEE is so popular. They dont care that it doesnt have a optical drive, card slots etc.. they only thing the Air cant do that the EEE can is being available for $300-500
pteharrison 4 years ago
lol, I mean seriously, who wants to go ultraportable. I rather have the HP HDX and chug around 15 pounds of pure raw gaming power.
ApFaqTech 4 years ago
Agreed.
epirawr 4 years ago
that has nothing as far as ports if u by it it is not 3 k wel spent its may b thin but by my book its bull
jahoo876 4 years ago
HPs blow for gaming. If you want "pure raw gaming power" get an alienware or stop bragging about your HP
MatchProductions 4 years ago
if you want "pure gaming power" custom build it, you would have to be a complete retard to think that alienware = #1
