@depluv2 ... don't mind those folks who hit the dislike button, there are many out there who claim to 'love' music and are fed on a constant diet of musical rubbish that they have no clue how to discern quality music when they get the chance to hear it.
Vocal range, technique, passion ,intensity, an actresses instincts and a god given kissed by the angels sweet voice wrapped up in beauty, brains, musicianship and soul that was our Minnie.
It is only through beautiful music like this that you can feel a certain kind of connection to the singer as i feel for minnie riperton. I never knew her, was not even born when she made these songs yet i have fallen deeply in love with her. I believe she's in a much better place than this tragic world of ours. She passed away the same year i was born(1979).
This is one of my favorite Minnie songs... She was such a great artist. I really started liking her music around 14 and I have almost all of her albums and collections. And the beautiful thing about her is that she has one of the sweetest voices I've heard. Her music is timeless and it never gets old to me.
She truly has a voice of an angel... And although brief, we were lucky to have her. Even if she was gone before I was even born
the perfect song , the perfect style; the perfect mom, the perfect wife. the perfect music, must of all the perfect angel now and 4ever, u r so o miss. may your light keep shining bright, i love u lady, r.i.p. 10-28-09.
Her songs make me want to fall in love and be loved. :)
I have been sleeping on Minnie, because I thought she was just the "Loving You," lady. It wasn't until I saw BET's Unsung where she was featured that it made me want to know more about her. For the last couple of weeks I have discovered so many beautiful songs by her. Even though the songs are old they don't sound dated, they sound as beautiful now as I'm sure they did when she fist sang them back in the day.
@atlantabrookyngal If you can get your hands on "Pedal" it's a 2 disc set of her songs from various albums. You would enjoy that. The Capital Gold collection is also a good one. You're so right she may not have had a wagon full of hits but she had some really great songs and one of the most beautiful voices ever.
@carterboy66 THANK YOU, I will definitely try to get my mittens on Pedal, I will take your word for it I'm sure it is an excellent collection of her work. Thanks carterboy. :)

This song is beautiful. It is kinda jazzy. This song is about love of course. Minnie's high notes touch you deeply. This song is just too damn good to be ignored. This song is from 1977's Stay In Love.
You guys ever hear the story of Stevie Wonder trying to find back up singers to replace Minnie? Or even at least be able to fill in admirably? Many came and Stevie finally got so frustrated he said forget this I will just have to do it myself! Now that is how the master even sees Minnie she was Angel and got taken from us too soon! Glad for the time we had with her! Got to see her a couple times singing with George Benson!
Randart: after watching American Idol, I can see why. Talent isn't easy to come by. Also, one has to hone it. Minnie practiced many many hrs honing. Some are not willing to put in all that hard work to perfect any latent talents.
I swear there's not a song this woman put out that I don't like. Another classic IMO. ONE HIT WONDER MY FOOT!
Btw...IMO the ONLY singer to come even close to Minnie as far as high notes... *but NOT surpass her*...is Deniece Williams. Although I do recognize all the others that have been mentioined. But Deniece was so almost similar to Minnie that for a long time many folks didn't know that it was Deniece singing that background high notes on Every Time He Comes Around.
Minnie was a true goddess. She seemed so otherworldly. Her physical beauty increased in such a bizarre way in such a short time. She looked so much more mature in the last year of life--so much older and more elegant than 31.
How that woman performed while her body was being ravaged by cancer was beyond brave--it was heroic. That superhuman quality and voice will forever be her legacy.
Listen to 3:39 & on how she evokes so much emotion with her natural voice...then in & out of her upper register. Other whistle register singers lack that emotion. They're too busy hitting the notes instead of singing them. She does it so effortlessly with so much passion. Love u Minnie. Gotta give props 2 Yma who evoked emotion in the whistle register b4 Minnie.
Minnie is such a original! People talk about how great Mariah is, but she was influenced by Minnie. It makes you wonder what would have happened if Minnie hadn't done the WR first. It would be a weird world, would it not?
There are a lot of other singers that have a range similar to Minnie and can sing that high. Mariah Carey, Rachelle Ferrell, Betty Wright, Shanice, Chante Moore and at least 4 males (Adam Lopez, Sebastian Vilas, Nicola Sedda and Tim Storms) can all sing in the 6th, 7th or 8th octave. Georgia Brown has the highest voice ever, but she's not a good singer at all.
Yes. She also had a few hits in the 80' like "After The Pain" and "No Pain, No Gain". She is known for having a talking monolouge somewhere near the bridge of most of her songs but she usually hits a few whistle notes in them as well and she like Riperton can hold them for a very long time.
Not trying to argue the point... I like Betty Wright very much and all the other singers you mention Mariah, Rachelle, Chante, etc. But with all due respect, the soul and passion that Minnie gives, i don't get that from any of those singers. There are certain parts of her songs where her voice is blended in with the instruments. She doesn't just hit the high notes, She sings them all the way through. Thats what seperates Minnie as a SOUL singer is how she blends that range soulfully into a record
I don't disagree with you at all. I was simply trying to point out for people that weren't aware that there are other singers besides Minnie that were known for singing in WR. But I agree that Minnie is in a class by herself.
Your way off - Mariah has never held a whistle note that long. Especially not live. So I doubt she could do it, and then to change into that bird chirping at the end only raised the bars farther away from Mariah.
I'm not saying Mariah can't do it, but I've heard her do extended notes in the 6th octave, then break the notes ups & continue singing as if she didn't do anyhting.
Thanks was absolutely breathtaking. Was that Minnie with the rag on her head, the photo was not clear? I am all into her music and her legacy. Great video, Thanks for sharing.
I know all about Minnie's history. I have seen all footage and most pictures, except this one. Minnie was so classy. The picture is very fuzzy. She was beautiful with or without the headgear.
It seems to me that I once read (though, unfortunately, I can't cite the source) that the shot of which you speak, plugggie and taravs (the one in which she's wearing the scarf on her head), was taken from a performance of her song "Inside My Love" where she holds an extraordinarily high note for an incredible duration towards the end.
Yeah, I think the 1st note was more powerful than the latter with nothing taking from it though. In fact, we got a bit more. Minnie took u 4 a ride with her notes; she gave just enough.
This tune is really one of those "feel good" pieces that just makes you happy! And, it STILL amazes me how long she holds that one extremely high note at the end of the second bridge!
one of her many classics from the 70's...i was stuck in naval airman training during the winter of '77 and had her music playing on my "8-track"..yes, i said "8-track"...minnie set the mood and her music took me to another place that i still yearn to be in....i miss her...
8-track is just that!...8-track....smile..actually it is how the music was recorded back then..there was 2-track, 4-track, 8-track, etc...supposedly, the higher the number of tracks, the sound is better...its all moot now since we have digital..which gives excellent recordings in much easier and accessible formats, ie., ipods, cds, even hi-fi records....
and also...the tape was even looped inside the cartridge in a figure 8...non stop music...kinda like a cd all you had to do was press play...HOWEVER...NO REWIND...PIFF!.
Listen to the range of her voice, sends chills down my spine.

That superhuman quality and voice will forever be her legacy.

great video. when I saw the head gear I thought it was because of the cancer . I miss her voice as well.

Georgia Brown has the highest voice ever, but she's not a good singer at all.
captainbryce1 3 years ago
You mention Betty Wright, captainbryce1. Are we talking about the same Betty Wright who did "Clean Up Woman?"
tyoonz 3 years ago
Yes. She also had a few hits in the 80' like "After The Pain" and "No Pain, No Gain". She is known for having a talking monolouge somewhere near the bridge of most of her songs but she usually hits a few whistle notes in them as well and she like Riperton can hold them for a very long time.
captainbryce1 3 years ago

But I agree that Minnie is in a class by herself.
captainbryce1 3 years ago
WOW you make great points! I agree. Minnie was the best WR singer of all times. My next favorite is Shanice Wilson.
Mshoney720 3 years ago
You are so right, in fact she is the only one who could pull this off. God bless Minnie's soul.

I agree with you about Georgia Brown. She cannot sing and screeches the high notes! My ear hurts listening to it!

Minnie Riperton has a rare five and a half octave vocal range.

aaah, one of my fav Minnie songs. Minnie breaks it down at 2:39 The only artist today that could possibly do that is Mariah.
deej1964 4 years ago
Your way off - Mariah has never held a whistle note that long. Especially not live. So I doubt she could do it, and then to change into that bird chirping at the end only raised the bars farther away from Mariah.
Kumtekmeon 4 years ago 4
I'm not saying Mariah can't do it, but I've heard her do extended notes in the 6th octave, then break the notes ups & continue singing as if she didn't do anyhting.

Thanks was absolutely breathtaking. Was that Minnie with the rag on her head, the photo was not clear? I am all into her music and her legacy. Great video, Thanks for sharing.
plugggie 4 years ago
"rag" on her head?? She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1976 and died 3 yrs later at the age of 31. Yes, that was her.
taravs 4 years ago
I know all about Minnie's history. I have seen all footage and most pictures, except this one. Minnie was so classy. The picture is very fuzzy. She was beautiful with or without the headgear.
plugggie 4 years ago
It seems to me that I once read (though, unfortunately, I can't cite the source) that the shot of which you speak, plugggie and taravs (the one in which she's wearing the scarf on her head), was taken from a performance of her song "Inside My Love" where she holds an extraordinarily high note for an incredible duration towards the end.
tyoonz 4 years ago
1 minute, 45 seconds into the song proves Minnie can exhibit power. She is truly "The Voice".
fossils12 4 years ago
Yeah, I think the 1st note was more powerful than the latter with nothing taking from it though. In fact, we got a bit more. Minnie took u 4 a ride with her notes; she gave just enough.

God please take care of our beautiful angel minnie. Rest in peace beautyful.

This tune is really one of those "feel good" pieces that just makes you happy! And, it STILL amazes me how long she holds that one extremely high note at the end of the second bridge!

I know right!

one of her many classics from the 70's...i was stuck in naval airman training during the winter of '77 and had her music playing on my "8-track"..yes, i said "8-track"...minnie set the mood and her music took me to another place that i still yearn to be in....i miss her...
drfstarks 4 years ago 2
is an 8-track something that just plays like 8 tracks from a cd? or album? Sorry I just never really understood that.
xmen4ever8290 4 years ago
8-track is just that!...8-track....smile..actually it is how the music was recorded back then..there was 2-track, 4-track, 8-track, etc...supposedly, the higher the number of tracks, the sound is better...its all moot now since we have digital..which gives excellent recordings in much easier and accessible formats, ie., ipods, cds, even hi-fi records....
drfstarks 4 years ago
oh well that sounds cool!
xmen4ever8290 4 years ago
and also...the tape was even looped inside the cartridge in a figure 8...non stop music...kinda like a cd all you had to do was press play...HOWEVER...NO REWIND...PIFF!.
