Yeah, we used to have the most unpredictable conditions - "rain or shine" was the usual tag after an event announcement. As posters here no doubt realize, original MX was supposed to be a closed mile to two mile circuit over NATURAL terrain. An occassional jump might be added at local events to slow down the bikes, but GPs and InterAM events had zero artificial additions. It's all about money. Making MX into a stadium show by turning it into a pogo stick contest made money.
@thebalconyisclosed A good friend of mine who is like me an AHRMA member told me recently that Motocross Action had an expose' about how the FIM was bought some few years ago by a man who raised fees to such a degree that the factories have dropped out of MX and Roadrace and it is all now just rich people. That is why the Americans always win MX des Nations events. Greed has killed the FIM. Sad
@deaddoc Such a waste, and for what reason? It certainly doesn't do anything for the racing fans... makes me miss the good ol' days even more, knowing they are just one more giant step closer to never coming back...
They didn't utilize model designations much at that time. Any co who did, such as Kawasaki, used the same designations they do today aka KX. At that time you could ride more than one class and many riders rode both 250 and 500 class. 500 class displacements varied from 360 to 500cc two strokes depending on the yr and mfr. Hope that helps!
The list below is good. However, there must have been a CZ or two out there. Those and Maicos became very expensive, but both were top mounts until the end of the '70s. I used to race a CZ in that region (California) and there was no shortage of either of those.
What an awesome clip. Like others have said, you won't be disappointed by the full video - in my opinion it gives On Any Sunday a run for its money as the best motorcycle video of all time, and it definitely is the best glory days of American MX video you will ever find. It's almost as good as bench racing, tinkering with your old YZ/CR/RM or reading Monkey Butt for the fifth time.
Love the little parts of Lake Sugar Tree I could pick out.. The one national Doug Domokus did a wheelie around the whole track.. sadly him and Pomeroy are both gone RUP ..thanks for preserving this footage..
Absolutely loved it. That was my life back in the 70s, racing and riding and always reading the magazines about my moto-x heros, such as DeCoster and Marty Smith. Thanks for the footage....

Can you imagine how the riders today would cry and throw tantrums if they were faced with a *gasp!* water crossing?!
