  • in my house we use the plastic bags for trash bags so using reusable bags wouldn't work for us.

  • Where I live some shops charge around €1 for a small plastic bag!

  • My mom does mors bags! She gives them as gifts!

  • Plastic bags are not consumed.

  • omg i have the same sewing machine like she has

  • we made something really cool in my art class. we cut strands of plastic bags ( green, red, blue, yellow, etc.) and tied them into knots to form a long strand of '' plastic bag thread''. then, we knit them into REALLY cool tote bags and purses. we made lots and went around selling them. It was really cool and they looked awesome. Its a good idea of recycling plastic bags and getting really cool & creative tote bags and purses in exchange.

  • @GMSWfhm3 You should make a video on how to do it. That seems cool. (:

  • I am all FOR recycling, but those reusable bags are just slapped together and ugly! I would NEVER carry that. You can recycle with style and quality..I Do it ALL THE TIME...sheesh!

  • to help the planet, use eco friendly bags as the one you can find on SPEIGHTS AND FARON BOUTIQUE. Original and designed by various french artist. Ideal for your shopping!

  • I've gotta hand sew..Mother never taught me how to use the machineyy xP

  • @HeartOfLaotians Haha. Its not hard to use a sewing machine! It's so easy a caveman could do it :P

  • haha even if it's ugly if you find something that screams "conservation" it's bound to stick on a hippies blog, vlog, or tv show any way you split it

  • can you show how to make bag out of a plastic bag??

  • this is awesome! i just bought a sewing machine, and am trying to learn the simplest of patterns possible, and you made this simple tote look way more chic than others i've found online! i will have to share this with other friends.

one question- how do you sew the edges of the fabric (so that the fabric isn't rough around the edge, and end up of fraying)?

  • I was looking for some handbag tutorial using shopping bags. Like from chanel for example. What do you do with that? Maybe turn it into a bag I guess. I think it would be a good idea, but I cant find anything like that

  • oh nd thebeininis BI FA LIE

  • thsvdeo elly sucs an if you a't ead y comment te you hae olms because i tyed everyhig erfctly youfggos ;D

  • still need info on crochet bags? the trick is in cutting out the plastic market shopping bags in a specific way as to leave you with a long strip of plastic, then you just crochet

  • i made a pencil case using the fusing plastc way

  • At 5:05 that was the wierdest thing ive ever seen

  • In fifth grade, we made bags out of ironed plastic bags in art. (I'm going to sixth grade after summer) we made a lot of 'em and sold some on art. one of mine was in a museum!

  • Hey guys! The other day I was at a handmade shop (the stuff, not shop) and saw these really cool totes. They were actually plastic bags, but sturdier and stiffer. Any ideas? Thanks guys! *snipsnip*

  • @MadamGlubGlub - I think those are fysed together with an iron and waxed paper.

  • The threadbanger host guy is REALLY hot :-) wow...

  • I wanna learn how to make the belt! T_T

  • wow this homeless man made these dresses and sold his idea to fashion designers. Fantastic!

Creativity comes when you have very little resources.

  • wow this homeless man made these dresses and sold his idea to fashion designers. Fantastic!

Creativity comes when you have very little resources.

  • This is appalling to think that all this plastic is polluting the environment -_-

    Its embarrassing.

  • their friend chelsea made a pencil case! my names chelsea and id never think of tht. lol. soo cool. (: haha

  • Very nice, it is a good idea.

  • great for school project ty

  • very cool

  • omg.. a pencil case and a belt!!! So cute -_-

I cant believe people have ideas like these waw!!

  • Awsome.

  • In south australia plastic shopping bags are banned from stores. If you want one you have to pay 20c. You would be surprised how many people opt not to get one. We also offer biodegradable bags. And now almost every household brings "enviro" bags to do their shopping. They are like tote bags. Its small but it helps!! and i mean there are 2 million people living in the capital city alone. For the whole state to participate i think we are making a difference

  • @harshiniprincess - in the UK they are not banned at all, and often they are free. It is awful.

  • @harshiniprincess That is a wonderful idea. I live in Israel, and most supermarkets sell (very cheaply) reusable shopping bags. This is a good start, but we need to adopt the "Pay for Plastic" plan too.

  • @harshiniprincess im in south Australia :)

  • @harshiniprincess

not just south australia, also Victoria, and supposingly other states too.

  • @harshiniprincess

Same here in France! And most people use market trolleys for big shopping. It used to be only old people using them but now everybody uses them. It makes foreign people laugh, like "haha! you use old people's trolleys!" -but at least we don't use disgusting plastic bags...

  • @harshiniprincess I really wish we would do that here in America. I'm sure that if stores charged for plastic bags, people would be more inclined to take reusable bags with them.

  • then make 2 straps instead of one and connect em using a buckle ,--( not the right word i am looking for but meh, close enough), that way the size of the strap can be adjusted.

  • ay how long should the strap be? im makin bags and asking people and they give me different answers

  • its diy which means that it can be any size that you like and see fit lol

  • but i dont use the bags and do not understand how should a bag fit on a person, im a guy i make bags for women

  • make the strap half strap half belt like. just like how any department store does.

  • To take it one step further, I make "plarn" out of plastic bags and then weave them into re-usable totes, mats, placemats, just about anything on a loom. The fabric woven out of plastic shopping bags is actually surprisingly very nice. check my channel if you need to know how to make plarn and then for a tote project where the handles are woven into the bag so that only the side and bottom need to be sewn.

  • to me that bag will not hold much

  • thats cool i have light-up hats i sell

  • i love watchin these kind of videos! but it sucked at recording the girl make the bag. and the instructions was bad....how dissappointing..

  • i agree!!!!

  • yep yep yep!

  • this video sucks, it dosnt give u any instruction

  • i learned how to do this from make mag

  • Freakin' love Buffalo Exchange. I go to the one in downtown Fullerton all the time! ;D

  • oh wow! 5:56 this is an amazing idea!

  • I am really diggin this lady's style! I am totally going to make that once I get some pants and stuff like that.I need to go to the thrift store...Snip Snip Snip

  • i want that bag

  • im sooo lucky!! i got a sewing machine yesterday :P

  • I'm feeling crafty now. Sucks that I don't have a sewing machine here. xD

  • LOL, same here. We need home built in sewin machines and we should be born with the gift to sew...

  • agreed! :P

  • @xxxFabby i feel u

  • @xxxFabby buy hand is better :D good luck

  • nice :D

  • hey me too. feels like i've seen this before.. queer

  • Thanks ! This is the BEST way to recycle ! (:

  • I LOVE that woman's jacket.

  • I noticed that a lot of diy-ers say "go ahead" way to much.

That bag was really nice, btw.

  • my art teacher taught us this :D

  • ms kosup?

  • why do i feel like ive seen this b4?

  • Yeah me too

  • yeah like bottle cap necklaces or jewelry or just decorating anything.

  • Outstanding ideals!! My mom makes purses & tote bags out of plastic shopping bags...

  • You can draw on your fabric more smoothly by dropping the feed dogs and stitching free motion. This eliminates having to use your reverse. You move the fabric freely under the presser foot. It takes some practice to get the right speed in which to move the fabric, but it makes for more fluid motions and lines.

  • of what materials did she do the long part of the tote bag? it looked like a really thick and heavy fabric. were they old shirts?

  • I saw that they did do a bottle cap episode.I watched it and faved it.

  • I make bottle cap jewlery. They could do a show on that.*snip* *snip*

  • you guys should make an epasode on bottle caps

    that would rock =]

    < = < = < *snip snip*

  • omgosh it's the buffalo exchange! :]

  • I have already subscribed but that banner that says please subscribe is really really annoying, It makes watching your videos hard to take.

  • re useable shopping bags are pretty cool but where I live the netherlands supermarkts charge for shopping bags and dutch people are cheap so customers always use re useable shopping bags I think all supermarkets should charge for shopping bags

  • omg I'm going to go around the road that i live on and try to get more bags to make stuff thx you guys!

  • my grandparents drop off the plastic bags so they can be used again

  • WELL i GUESS I'MA HAVE TO MAKE PLENTY OF THOSE..

  • That bag was cute as heck

  • i loved Rebekah's voice, really calming

    awesome show! yay!

  • lol rob at 5:04

  • great. glad i came across this. i'll be sending you guys some stuff. i make something everyday. my room looks like a clean landfill!

  • wow this is really great

  • I loved it! I like the idea of giving reusable bags away at the door! It would make shoppers think twice!

  • here in Belgium there are some shops selling bags that you can use over and over made from fabric, they're strong, light weight and can easily fit into your purse :)

  • I think ThreadBangers is great, but what do we put our trash in? Fabric trash can liners? It just doesn't work. If we no longer accept plastic shopping bags, we are forced to buy trash bags which also aren't biodegradable and are not free. Untill biodegradable trash bags are more readily available and cheaper, I see plastic shopping bags as a necessity. Though returning torn and unusable bags to our grocey stores for recycling is a nice way to help.

  • There trying to cut down on plastic "shopping" bags (the ones you get from grocery stores) that just get thrown away. I can see where your comming from, but as it stands now, the majority of people use disposable plastic "shopping" bags AND disposable plastic "garbage" bags. If we can cut the amount of "shopping" bags used, were still doing something, yes?

  • I have purchased at least four of those big blue heavy duty plastic totes from Ikea. they were about fifty four cents each and I use them to carry everything from groceries to laundry. They fold flat too. I keep one in the car. I am trying to find a place to recycle all of my plastic grocery bags. Baggers unecessarily double n triple bag things and put only 3lt weight items per bag. Such a waste!

  • Why don't you watch your bagger and ask them to stop or simply pack your bags yourself, this way you can fit most of your groceries into less bags.

  • I honestly just got tired of taking plastic bags home and trying to find a place to recycle them. I like the big blue bags.

  • I think if i tried to make a bag that big, my sewing machine would break... Well my moms sewing machine would break haha.. It's from when she was in college... Its a really cool idea, maybe I could make smaller ones.

  • how so?

  • The "making your own bag" segment was awesome, I just feel that there was a little too much camera action, xD I'm a newb at sewing, and I need ALOT of explanation :P

  • about what AngeFauve said. Another way is take some plastic bags and lay them down on an ironing board (on top of a greaseproof sheet) then lay another greaseproof sheet on top, then iron away! Thus making a thick useful material.

But you probably knew that already, oh well.

  • *I* didn't know that =D Thanks ^_^v

  • You can also crochet plastic bags into a new, more sturdy bag. I'm not sure how, but I saw a woman who had made some at a farmer's market.

  • If you see her again, ask her and send us a message or video. We'd love to see it!

  • Plastic bag crochet can be researched on the Internet. Some people make rugs and mats out of them. Look it up...its quite interesting! They come in many colors and can be cut into "yarn".

  • Actually, it is called "plarn"....plastic yarn.

  • @AngeFauve This is an OLD comment haha, but my friend can knit them :)

  • AWESOME

  • music from "amelie" when the french guy is talking... classy.

  • i want robs jacket in this!

  • i also want to say that you should do something teaching how to make a corset out of a tee shirt. ive seen it done so many times but never how to actually do it.

  • I love the idea I just wish someone made one that was a little more..... er.. manly, I'd feel kinda silly pulling that out and going shopping.

  • You can always alter the design so you would feel comfortable using it.

  • oooo in make mag channal on youtube they teach you how to make a messenger bag too

  • hey threadbangers

i cannt believe its just about been a year! i have been watching your show every week and i love it! I was wondering how do you fuse bags? i would love to make a belt out of them to ware to school thanks

  • it is pretty simple to fuse plastic bags Take your plastic bag cut the straps and bottom out.

Turn it inside out, fold once or twice , put on top of wax paper with a piece of wax paper on top and iron

  • hey threadbanger

i just wanted to say how much i LOVE u guys. im from australia and i dont think they show it here but i came across it on youtube. So hope u guys can upload heaps more videos! thanx

  • Thanks seal435! Appreciate your love all the way from down under! very cool to know we have fans that span the globe! We have a website and forum so make sure to check it out and say hi!

  • I love you guys so much.

  • did you notice how many times that lady said, "I'm just going to go ahead and..." lol... the terminology of these how-to shows is so limited apparently. =p lol!

  • It'll be cool if you guys incorporated new elements/trends from fashion week into your show for both men and women.

  • Good idea tntsk8erchick - we will see what we can do!

  • I've got a huge stock of plastic bags, and so far I've knit them and fused them, but I was wondering if there were any other ideas for upcycling them.

  • I love ur show & been watching it from the beginning! Props on the little commercials btw; the indy mogul one is hilarious LOL!

  • this is way better than the last episode, but i agree with Andichan, your guest's directions weren't very clear.

  • Ok, I could follow that Rebecca chick's tutorial since I sew, but I can see a lot of non-sewers (or beginning sewers) getting confused by her directions. She is really vague. But otherwise, great idea!

  • true about Rebecca, I could understand better if she showed more of the steps, and explained more in detail. But Yeah, such a cool cool bag.

  • Omg this show rocks!

I wish I found out about it sooner

  • that 1% recycled shoping bags are mostly under my moms sink

  • I love this one! Thanks!

  • My family uses our plasic bags to line trash cans. Without them, the house would smell like rotting food.

The pin on your hat is so simple yet amazing! I love it!

  • ooo nice video this week guys :)

im totally inspired to be more green! i think for valentines day im going to try and make everything from recyled material or just something thats now gonna kill Earth!!

thanks tons for the video, rob you're a cutie and corinne, i love ya!

    -minnie

side note: what ever happened to the sewing machine giveaway?

  • Excellent tips for the enviroment!!!!!!I love your show ;)

  • thanks!

  • I love Buffulo Exchange!

  • Love your stuff! I'm from Canada and after watching your vids, I've done a few projects of my own and finally learned how to sow, use a sowing machine, and knit! So thanks, guys!

How about some cool pullover hoodie techniques? I've seen all zip-ups so far, why not the non-zip ones? Would be awesome!

    Thanks!

  • hey, u guys use a sewing machine a lot! i have one, but it only has one type of stitch. i need one thats affordable and doesnt need a degree in rocket science either, but it gets the job done! thnx!!!

  • You could find a sewing machine at local thrift shops, or on your local craigslist, if you live in a metropolitan area that is. I found a 8 stitch sewing machine at my local savers thrift shop, for $30. but hehe ended up paying over $70. cause didn't have sufficient funds, not funny actually. But yeah, hope that helps.

  • wuts a craigslist? i have an angie's list mag that comes every once in a while, but thats all. there also arent many OPEN thrift shops here where i am. well, there are a few, but they always seem to be closed for maintenenance or construction =( do you know any kind of specific brand name that might help?

  • Thrifts don't come in brands per se. You might have St Vincent De Paul shops, or Goodwill or Salvation Army, or there may be thrifts that benefit the local Hospice or church or Habitat for Humanity. Lots of other things, too. Even with the Salvation Army thrifts, what you find at a given location will be really variable. Some stores may never carry sewing machines, or maybe no shoes, or no bicycles.

Just google or search craigslist and then narrow it down to your area. It is an online list.

  • i love the tokens for bags!

they use to have reusable bags, i dont know if they still do it but i used the same bag for like a year and i think i still have it:)

anyways could you guys make an episode how to make halter tops with normal t-shirts?

  • One of the earlier episodes they did make a tank top out of a normal t-shirt. And there is a great book Generation T.

  • LOL, I watched this just after I was talking to my mom about always having so many plastic bags.

  • This is a really interesting episodes, but what is it with DIY people and the expression "go ahead"? The people who say it tend to say it again and again. Why?!?

  • And what is it with my pluralizing episode? Oops.

  • i wanna learn how to make those dresses out of bags!!!

  • Awesome, Much better than the stores reusable bags.

  • awesome!
