  • those elite guards are badass. Loved when the blonde ones first appear outside the base. Used to play the arcade just for that part.

  • the master system version at least had the correct music for this fight

  • I like this version better than the arcade.. the arcades framerate was soooo damn slow

  • All of that to rescue a tranny??

  • Part of the reason this game sounds so bad is because it was an un-licensed cart. Only Double Dragon 3 was officially sanctioned by Sega. DD1 and and DD2 Genesis are tenchnically "bootlegs"

  • @ZombieRyushu I wouldn't consider them bootlegs, as they use the double dragon liscense, they just weren't approved by sega. they weren't illegal. as for the quality, it's a known fact that there were unliscensed games that went over the 8 megabit limitation of the original genesis cart (such as Star Control, also by ballistic, if memory serves). weaker games had superior sound. they just took cost saving shortcuts on this title

  • It takes one hell of a badd ass to beat up 3 guys and one of the has a gun.

  • i spend too many coin in this game !!! xD

  • @DmoneyBrown Lol,I've seen that...

  • That penny whistle sound effect is kinda funny. Sounds like Intellivision/Coleco music.

  • @DmoneyBrown yes, his name is "Willy."

  • Looks good but doesnt play like the arcade version.

  • i love how if you havee two players here, you fight over the chick in the end! :L i allways found it funny, cus id allways get her :D

  • the final boss music is very badass

  • There are quite a few Genesis games that were widely acknowlegded at the time as having good/memorable soundtracks... take for example the Sonic the Hedgehog series, the Streets of Rage series, some of the Disney games (I thought Fantasia was pretty good), some of the sega arcade ports.

  • Holy hell the enemies are fast!

  • OMG!!! Marian is a Shemale!!!

  • I am sorry XSC3, If you think Doubel Dragon genesis music is amazing then you are obviously wrong (or have possibly the WORST taste in chips tunes then anyone I've met in my life). Have you ever Played Games such as Thunder Force III,Lightening Force,Streets of Rage,Streets of rage,Streets of rage II, Revenge of Shinobi,Devilish,Shinobi III:Return of the ninja master or Elemental Master? These games I've mentioned have GREAT samples in Genesis music,Double Dragon does not.

  • @TheDemoniusX I guess I should clarify. I mean that they did a decent job of re-creating the background music from the original arcade game, on the genesis cart. I did NOT mean that somehow this was the best music on the system. I freely admit they could have done better as the existence of other games (like the SOR series) in the same genre with better sound prove. I'm talking about authenticity, not overall quality.

  • @XSC3

Fair enough and I agree with that statement. The game looks good and plays fine. Just the music is terrible but yet they did try to re-created the arcade experience on a console and Ballistic did just that. Thanks for clearing that up. kudos.

  • @TheDemoniusX no sweat. I would never bash the great music work done in titles like the ones you listed! ;)

I've said it before. People like to go on about how the Genesis' sound sucked and the SNES was so much better, but they forget that there were quite a few good and memorable soundtracks done on the "lesser" sega hardware.

  • @XSC3 Like which ones? Oh, and I am asking seriously, so sorry if I sound like a wise-ass, that is far from my intention.

  • @XSC3 Well, the first few seconds before it sounds more like 8-bit music is SORT of decent.

  • @TheDemoniusX right there were plenty of games with good sound effects, samples, and/or music on the vanilla genesis. The system was capable of much more than what you hear in this DD port, to be sure! It is a pity that they didn't push the envelope more on this port, even though I still say the music is pretty accurate. Again, people bash the genesis unfairly because of the lower audio specs or because they only knew the SNES back in the day.

  • Thumbs up for panties @ 3:08 ;)

  • What the gratuitous panty shot?

  • the sega system had such a terrible sound chip!! so much more clearer on the snes and nes for that matter.

  • @braaaainz sorry, no, the NES chip was inferior.

Now as to the punching sounds, yes, the NES Double Dragon punching sounds were better (like a stick hitting a box or a brick, as opposed to just a keyboard tap or ping or "fart" sound like in this game). The Genesis was capable of better, the developers just didn't utilize it in this port (probably due to budget, they spent it on music and graphics)

  • yah, you're right, sorry. the NES chip definitely could not produce as much sound manipulation as the sega system. i guess i was just stating a preference.

  • @XSC3 the master system had better sound for double dragon

  • @skynsidhawaii well the sms version had blips and bloops for the sound FX. I guess that's better than barely audible thuds and "farting" sounds (like an old dos game), but still. I just tray to crank the music and ignore the sound fx in this version.

  • @braaaainz Play Sonic2, please

  • @kanfor i have. it was ok. not that fun.

  • Haha, I remember this music, definetly not the only game it appeared on.

  • Really? I know the Genesis (and Master System) recycled some sound effects and voice samples, but as I understand it, this particular music was ONLY ever used in the Double Dragon series.

  • DD2 was too slow and this was too fast!

  • I really didn't care for Mega Man (tried to play it a few times, and the Genesis Wiley Wars). mainly because you couldn't aim your gun and the platforming was frustrating at times. maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but there were plenty of other games I could play that I liked better

  • @XSC3 Well those games were more of a challenge to some gamers, including me and I tried my best. My point is the music from those games was really revolutionary for their time. Back when CD quality sound wasn't available. Check out the music themes for those games on YouTube. They should be listed under Mega Man OST. Mega Man 2 NES has a memorable beat in the 1st Wily Castle stage. I dont recall aiming ur gun in any Mega man game but its sega version. MMX4 also has great tunes on PS1. CAPCOMFTW

  • 3:07 what a ho... LMAO!!!!

  • the genesis version was great & 98% accurate to the arcade but it was just too damn fast.

  • Yeah, basically the "true speed" of Double Dragon was when you were fighting one enemy alone. Add more people and enemies and it slowed down. The Genesis version maintained constant speed. Of course it was annoying in the arcades when things slowed down, but at least you could keep pace (and it got faster the more guys you defeated). Once you get used to it it's not bad, but you spend a lot of time running around in circles to outmaneuver enemies now.

  • @wingnut4427 were the controls better then the arcade game? i loved these games but i remember the horrid controls for the arcade that the 360 replicated perfectly.

  • @shaolinlueb I guess the controls are good for some than others. I myself was fine with them but the lagg in the arcade took away from the game. The Genesis version was too fast & was loaded with bugs.

  • @shaolinlueb the controls in the arcade were fine. never played it on a 360 controller... all the game had was an 8 way joystick and 3 fire buttons (combinations gave you all your moves). the original had a lot of slowdown so you just had to time your moves accordingly. this version has zero slowdown, so many people were thrown by that. the controls are not 100% responsive here, but you get used to it

  • I never made it to this level...

  • chic looks like a dude in drag.... yuck

  • lol Just close your eyes.

  • the thing about this game is that all it's trying to do is be faithful to the arcade game (and in a few places, improve upon it). it succeeds in some areas and fails in others. so it should be judged on how it stacks up to the game it's porting

  • Genesis had a really shitty soundchip , only Streets of Rage and Sonic sounded respectable.

  • Plenty of games sounded just fine for the time, it was how much memory was allocated for sound, of which this game very little was (and it was devoted to the music, rather than the SFX).

  • My mom and dad used to make love to this music.

  • @skyfinch That must've been some kinky ass sex.

  • I didn't know once Mr. X got his ass beat in Streets of Rage he tried to beat Billy and Jimmy

  • Marion is on roids

  • LOL I love this music. The only reason I play this version of the game....

  • Damn, the audio in Genesis really sucks!!!

  • No, just this game.

  • listen to street of rage I sonic and comix zone songs and you will change your mind.

  • The "songs" might even be good, but the audio quality is really is really weak...

  • man that was 1990, anyway the sound of this game is really shit, SNES is not too much better anyway

  • True, we gotta consider the early 90's fact as well. :-)

  • are you saying music made in the 1990's was just bad in general? There aren't any lyrics, it's video game music... and for video game music it was pretty darned amazing. This whole thing started because we were talking about the audio quality (not whether people LIKED the music). The Genesis hardware was capable of better than this, much better. It's the size of the cartridge chosen did not allow for higher quality sound. they choose getting the basic tunes right over proper sfx in this port

  • No, what I said is that in the early 90's the audio quality in the videogames was not so good. Nobody was talking about "music" or melody, you see...

  • Compared to what, though? On the home systems, there was "good" and "bad" music. The "best" in the early to mid 1990's were the CD based games, which were somewhat rare before the Saturn and Playstation took off (1995).

  • Compared to the arcade games. But it's true that this version tried to be faithful to the original arcade one, and that is a good thing, though.

  • @XSC3 You obviously haven't heard the music from Capcom based games back in the day like Mega Man series. Some say those were better than today in terms of the impact it gave. That was only on cartridges the CD based games also were incredible on the Mega Man games.

  • Obviously I haven't. I never really played the Mega Man games (unless you count the "Power Battle" arcade games, which weren't anything special unless you were already a fan I imagine). My verdict of Capcom games is mostly based on the "2D" arcade games they released in the mid 80's to late 90's (and the subsequent home ports of those games on consoles)

  • lol, marion looks like a dude in a dress with terrible posture, and the love music just isnt.....very emotive sounding, I wasnt a big fan of the genesis sound processor however, makes it sound more goofy than anything, though ill agree the genesis version was one of the most enjoyable.

  • she looks a lot more attractive in the arcade version. sadly the female characters suffered the most in the porting process for some reason!

  • that shows too much panty

  • Lol Marion looks like a guy in drag.

  • I was thinking the same

  • Graphics wise Genisis double dragon was the best around but the control system sucked, i mean REALLY SUCKED the best version of DD for me is now DD Advance on the GBA a perfect mix of old school and old, new moves extended story just a great game>

  • I still prefer the original arcade game over DDA for several reasons (not just nostalgia), it's short enough that it doesn't get repetitive, it doesn't mix in so many supernatural/sci fi elements (retaining more of the gritty street fighting "realism"), and it is obviously meant for a stand-up/TV rather than a small portable screen. But DDA is great fun, nonetheless, and superior to any of the other ports in terms of replayability and control.

  • Nice job man

  • For the arcade, yes the original is still good but it is slightly repetitive in its set of moves compared to DDA the new move set brings a whole new angle to the game. Wouldnt a Next gen DD be amazing though? an old school scrooling DD Beat em up with the power of the 360 or PS3 could be amazing in terms of graphics obviously but also would have a massive set of ways to dispach your enemies.

  • I think we should consider the NES trilogy (and Turbo Duo DD2, and the gameboy DD 1 & 2) to be seperate games from the arcade series. They're just loosely based on the titles of the same name. The other systems attempt to port the arcade games (and DD3 Gameboy is a port of the arcade, rather than NES, iirc).

  • The SMS version has graphics that are very similar in style to the NES, but the game itself follows the structure, layout and so forth of the arcade far more closely. It has goofy sound (the SMS had better graphics than the NES). It's nowhere near arcade perfect, but worth playing with 2 players. The Turbo Duo DD2 was great fun. I didn't like the animation style much, and it's not the arcade game, but it's worth playing even if you love the NES version.

  • But let's not forget... the selling point for DD NES (and all the home ports that came out in '88) "You'll never have to wait in line to play Double Dragon again!"

I still did, because the NES version was still unsatisfying for an arcade fan! I agree, youngin' who don't remember the arcade just don't know what they're talking about...

    ;)

DD 2 on the NES was a decent game, but again, hampered by too many platforming puzzles and limited "2-D" segments (where you can only move left or right).

  • That's not to say that the NES version can't be fun. I have said it a million times... but the VS. mode is fun (albeit limited by today's standards). The only other DD port that had a VS. mode option was the Atari 2600 (and it was just Billy Vs. Jimmy with a baseball bat in the middle). The arcade of course you could fight each other any time, or you automatically fought at the end of the game.

Sometimes ports surpass the original. DD NES is loosely based on the arcade, but doesn't come close.

  • The thing about the NES game is it doesn't have anywhere near the feel of the arcade. People complain that the arcade has slowdown and the elbow punch exploit that makes the game super easy (IF you do nothing but that one attack)... but the NES version is worse, it has tons of glitches, bad graphics, and loads of limitations (weapons taken away each fight, no 2 player coop). The DD games on the NES have those annoying platforming sequences too which are just designed to piss off kids.

  • Exactly, 2 player was what DD was about! The NES didnt even have it. Dont get me started on the platform element! The gameboy version pissed me off enough with that.

  • Maybe you can get the nes trilogy on an emulator. I play mine on the nes PSP emulator all the time. It would be cool to see HD versions of the nes DD's released for wii or something, so that people could relive the experience of playing the games with updated graphics. They tried to do it with DDII for Turbograpx but it deviated from the fun of the nes version too much. Have you played the SMS version before? Do you think its any good?

  • Yeah I agree with most of what you say because you can't beat the original. The nes versions are slowly becoming my favorite scrolling beat em ups alongside the Streets of Rage trilogy. Double Dragon III for nes let the side down somewhat just because they made it so hard with only having one life and all, but I know as far as gameplay goes its the better game and perhaps the best conversion of DDIII.

  • The Sega Genesis version is a favorite of mine. The Atari Lynx one was pretty good too. The Sega Genesis one was the best for a long while. Double Dragon advance is awesome too, but lacks (at times) the original arcade look that the Sega Genesis version has more of. Hats off to the programmers who produced the Sega Genesis version. It kicks ass.

  • i think the genesis version is quite poor, the GBA advance version is better.

  • I agree that Double Dragon Advance is a better GAME (for fun) than Double Dragon Genesis... however DD Genesis is definitely closer to the arcade original in terms of authenticity. The arcade DD is still unmatched though, and DDA, though fantastic, still has a rather different look and feel to it than the first two arcade games (but I count it as a worthy member of the series).

I wish DDA had been released on other platforms, though!

  • I cant stand the generation who grew up with the NES version ignorant of the arcade, some even prefere it to the arcade! Sad, was saying that to someone on another video yesterday. The Arcade is the real classic game. I did find the Genesis version a bit sloppy but it looks quite similar.

  • Actually I played all other versions e.g. arcade, Genesis, Amiga way before I played the nes, but still think the nes is the best version lol.

  • I just dont understand that! I owened the gameboy one which is a bit like the nes one, but it was nothing more then a pale immitation at best, the NES one was total crap to me lol.

  • I agree with you to a certain extent. I loved the Genesis version I really did and I guess I can say it is about equal to the nes one. The nes one was the most fun and challenging to me, that's all. First time I played it I dismissed it as utter crap but once you give it a go and advance through the levels, especially level 3 (man its hard) you will see the beauty of the Nintendo version.

  • Its prob best to see it as a variation, the gameplay graphics etc are very different. I just grew up with the arcade and loved it so couldnt take the nes seriously.

  • Truly an awesome game, one of the best beat em ups of all time.

This and the Warriors for the PS2

  • Fuck yeah! Double Dragon is awesome!

  • this is the BEST home port out of all the ones out there. it has the closest arcade resemblance from the sprites, gameplay, and the music. the xbox live is not a home port you can buy on cartridge or disc.

  • So in these home ports, Jeff and Abobo get the shaft. Instead you get recolored Bolo and recolored Lee brother (Billy/Jimmy). It's interesting that the NES made a whole new character, but I guess the NES' detail level was so low, that they wanted to make sure you would be able to distinguish the characters, as you'd be fighting a lot of them (you only fight Jimmy once).

  • Where's Jimmy? You are supposed to Fight Jimmy this Version was the closest to the Arcade Version, but it stinks!

  • This follows the original Double Dragon (the arcade game). In this, as in the original, you only fight your brother if you're playing with two players. Thus you play through cooperatively and then it goes into "Vs. mode" when you beat Willy. So in 1 player mode, you just win!

  • when you punch or kick, it makes a fart, when you jump kick, it makes a sound of a splashing toilet lol

  • Yeah, they clearly used up all the memory with the graphics and music, without enough left over to have more than really basic, dull sound effects. I am guessing this was just an 8 meg cartridge. Had they chosen to use the larger (more expensive) sizes like 16 or 24, I bet they could have had great sound. After all, Streets of Rage 2 & 3 have hard hitting sounds, as well as great graphics. The Genesis was capable of more. Ballistic just dropped the ball on the sound.

  • ever played the double dragon extreme mod?

  • Yeah. I was a little turned off by the dull BOR gameplay (if it's going to look like Double Dragon, I expect it to play like DD, dang it!).

I have played so many of those BOR mods, that they all start to feel exactly the same, so I don't think I ever finished that one.

  • the only high point i feel in tht mod is probably the final boss. and it kind of seems like he fighting moves in the mod were taken off of dda. and let me tell ya, dda had lots of moves! like a move where you do 4 kicks but i always forget how to do that. and the only way i can be able to play that game is on a emulator!

  • the second enemies that i see are guys that look just like you! lol mabey if they worked a little hrder with character designs. but overall this game is pretty fun at times. even though the enemies follow you everywhere!

  • That's actually a common occurrence. The home versions of Double Dragon took shortcuts by using palette swapping instead of sprite swapping. For example, "Bolo" and "Abobo" are the same body sprite, just with a different head. The home versions got rid of Abobo and just used recolored Bolo. Same with Jeff (the mission 2 boss, and guarding the enemy base... Willy's henchman, etc), which is a head-swap of the Lee brothers. The home versions either replaced him with "Chin" (NES) or just recolored.

  • I thought this was an awesome version of Double Dragon. You kicked that douchebags ass. 5/5

  • why was this on genisis??? and i thought there was some other last boss, some guy with green hair or somthing

  • Why is any game on genesis? Because someone licensed it for play. DD is a great game, and deserved to be on every system.

Final boss with green hair, karuk? Perhaps you're thinking of the final boss in DD2 for the NES? He was never in the arcades.

  • oh, d.d 2! im stuck in the past with all these games.

  • Yeah, the arcade versions of Double Dragon 1, 2, and 3 were totally different on the NES from the arcades (though of the three, DD1 is the most similar to its coin-op counterpart). I generally prefer the arcade games, due to the graphics/sound, repertoire of moves, weapons, and the general lack of annoying platforming puzzles. But I agree that DD3 arcade is a mediocre fighting game.

  • wait, i guess i was thinking of the bor mod double dragon extreme. that had the last boss of d.d2 nes.

  • >>>

wait, i guess i was thinking of the bor mod double dragon extreme. that had the last boss of d.d2 nes.

    >>>

Right. He was a sprite edit of Williams (DD2 arcade).

  • lol at her panties showiung when they kissed

  • Funny how the CPU copies your movement inputs.

  • Me and my sister loved this game! Good childhood

  • Love how the AI follows your movement patterns..

  • this is one of the better looking Double Dragon translations to home console.

Sadly, it is not as good as the arcade. somewhat surprising given the fact that the arcade machine actually had an 8-bit CPU while the Genesis is of course 16-bit.

Genesis version has fewer colors, missing detail and lower quality audio. Still, it's much closer to the arcade than the Master System or other console & computer versions.

Yet, the Genesis was capable of much better than this.

  • She humps him in the end lol!

  • Damn, the Genny version of this game looks quite good. If you want a real laugh, play the PC-Engine CD version of this game.....HORRID.

  • DD1 came out on the TurboGrafxCD? I am pretty sure it was only Double Dragon 2 (and it wasn't too bad).

But yeah, the arcade versions are the best, and the Genesis version comes the closest of any 16 bit port to duplicating that.

  • The characters sure move fast on this version.

  • Indeed. No slowdown! The real downfall of this version is the sound. Great music, awful sound effects... :(

  • hahaha omg good old days!

  • Ah, you like old games too. You're okay in my book then, even if we disagree on other things. ;)

  • Yes, but I admit I am more of a street fighter games. And I'm probably not as old school as you'd like... long live PSX! =P

  • Games were so much more fun to play then. All this 3D crap you get now is just confusing.

  • Well not all of the 3D games are bad, there are some really fun ones too. But I agree, there was definitely a "golden age" in the 80's (and early 90's) with a lot of original, fun and addictive games, that didn't rely on graphics alone to keep you playing. Arguably, now since "every game" has decent graphics, the gameplay sticks out even more.

  • In the arcade (and this version; and also DD Advance) you fight Billy Vs. Jimmy if two players make it to the end. If only one does, then whoever it is wins Marion. That's always how it's been... The NES could only simulate this.

  • Just remember that the arcade version was first. Taito liscensed the US version from Technos Japan in 1987 and THAT is Double Dragon. Tradewest liscensed the game for the home systems a year later and they all to varying degrees had to dial down the game for the limited home hardware. There still has not been a perfect arcade port yet (except emulations), though the MD version comes the closest.

  • What's up with fighting the brother in the nintendo version?

  • Due to hardware limitations, the NES version was single player only. Well there was 2 player but you took turns and you could only play as billy. So they made it so that at the end, after beating willy you fought a computer controlled jimmy. The manual made up some story about jimmy being the "real shadow boss" and wanting billy's girlfriend or something.

  • For me, on the NES, the only DD game worth your time is DD2. The NES DD1 is just disappointing and frustrating... it's only redeeming quality is the Vs. Mode (which I wish every DD game would have!).

  • well... I've never got to the final stage, but I'm trying to. I almost won in Streets of Rage 2. ^^

  • YEAH!!! i totally remember that game.

  • If somebody romhacked this game to replace the sound effects with the original arcade sounds and fixed that music thing at the end, the game would have improved 10x! Amazing what proper sound will do... DD's sounds are so memorable. Again, it's because Ballistic didn't use a larger memory cartridge when porting the game.

  • I agree! Major oversight. I was thinking perhaps it only played if you had a two player duel at the end, but even then, nope. Just the same generic "boss music." So you never hear the DD theme except during the "attract mode." :( So it's a good port, but not arcade perfect by any means...

  • They didn't use the Double Dragon theme song for the final boss. Now that's bullshit!

  • Point totals (sega genesis): Punch: 50 Kick: 100 Uppercut: 300 Roundhouse Kick: ? Jumpkick: 100 Hair-pull Kick: 180 per knee Headbutt: 200 Elbow Punch: 100 Throw: 180 Reverse Kick: 200 Knife: 500 Other weapons: 200
  • Ah, according to an arcade faq (on gamefaqs) here are the point totals. I'll have to double check them in this version. Punch: 50 Points Kick: 100 Points Uppercut: 500 Points? Jumpkick: 200 Points Elbow: 180 Points Throw: 50 Points Hair-pull Kick: 50 Points each, max 4 kicks per grab Headbutt: 200 Points Most Weapons: 200 Points Knife: 500 Points Dynamite: 0 Points.
  • Basically it seems what the Ballistic team did was to pattern their game off the arcade version set to "Hard." You get ONE extra life at the 30,000 pts mark and THAT'S IT. You can't change it. There are no game genie cheats I've ever seen (besides 'infinite time' I think). You can't do the armlock move in this one, so you can't cheat to get a super high score and tons of extra lives. The key to a high score is to kill EVERYONE.

  • This has got to be one of the hardest versions of double dragon I've ever played! Yes, it's possible to make it to the end of the game with the default starting lives/continues (you basically get one continue, which resets your score, for a total of 4 lives).
